I live above you in North East Georgia. I did auto collision and restoration for a living. Nice work on the 60 much nicer work then I have seen out of many so you can call your work nice work in my eyes. I love restoration and custom work and painting and airbrushing I did for a few years in the shop next to my home. I love your videos I always enjoy them. I am restoring a early 72 standard beetle and it's almost road ready. I can only work on it about two hours a day because I am disabled and two hours really beats me up now... I have to save up for new tires now which will not be easy because my wife is disabled with M.S. in a wheelchair now. But maybe we can cross paths one dsy when I get my tires. I found a nice set of used chrome mangles with round hold in them I grabbed up on a two hour ride one way. But keep up.the videos I have been watching them for a long time now and i love to see the progress on both your beetles...
Thank you, I appreciate the compliment. Since you were in body repair for so long you’ll understand that we are our toughest critics on our work…. With that being said, I’m that way with anything that I do, I usually have very tough standards for myself, that’s just how I am. Even though a lot of this body repair, I’ve never done before.
I can understand putting in limited time on a project, some days I don’t even have the energy to open the garage…. That’s the beauty of a project, work on it when you’re up for it.
Sorry to hear about your wife, that’s got to be tough.

neodimium magnets out of old hard drives to a GREAT job of holding 2 pieces of sheet together for a but weld...

@@VWJawbreaker Experience time.... those magnets will die a quick death from heat exposure. If you use them keep them COMPLETELY away from the heat! Even a repeated warming cycle will kill em in no time. I have em, and use em lots.... also ruined a ton of them lol

Gary the time is always more than one realizes; I will share on a video but I took my bus pop window frames to bare metal and primed and painted the have a seal that around the outside of the frame fitted into a slot..wow crazy amout of time cutting old seal out cleaning it. It was taking me 8 hours to strip clean and prime 2 windows . Frontstart to finsihed painting 40 hours time for window. Today I will get the new rubber seals and i,m sure it will take crazy time to install. The non vw person looks at the 6 pop winds and thinks wow cool how they pop out but have no idea the amount of work and money that went into the windows.
It’s definitely taking a lot more time than I had anticipated, can’t imagine having more real estate like a bus to do. You’ve done an amazing job buddy, keep up the great work!
Mine won’t be anywhere as nice as yours when it’s done but it’ll be solid and better than it was!

Put your patch on with a few tacks . Take then your cutoff wheel and cut along the patch edge in-between the tacks on a 45 angle . match the panel so it is level to one another and place a few more tacks to hole even . NO GAPS THEN !
Man, I saw that somewhere else also but I always forget about it when it’s time to get working. This body panel stuff is outside of my comfort zone, just trying to do the best that I can.
Luckily i only have some small issuescon my body. The pan and some places is my only welding that i must do. Still have too sand down 6layers of paint too see how the body looks like under the paint. Great video

One good thing about VW panels is that the curved surfaces stop a lot of the warping. Looking good.

Looks good! Those A pillars take some time if you need to replace both the inner and outer pieces. i think i spent the most time on those on my 65.

Thanks man and I do agree with you…. However we’re always our worst critic especially when we think we can do better or hope for “perfection”. Starting to realize there is no perfection and I’ll have to adjust my expectations quite a bit.
@@VWJawbreaker in a way its a good thing because skills won't improve unless we push ourselves to make things better, at the same time we've gotta take a step back and realise how much improvement we've made and how much better the repairs are than what some people deem as acceptable. When I look back at pictures of my 1st patches compared to now it gives me a bit of a boost.

What I noticed, on the old metal, that you have to clean it very well. Otherwise, the welds are like zits on a butt, lol.
I’ve noticed that as well, I’m starting to clean the metal even more now.
Gary, thanks for another great video. When you lay the bare metal piece over another bare metal and weld together, how do you keep them from rusting. It seems like rust would occur between the two metals. Thanks in advance for helping me understand this better.
If you’re worried about it, they make welds ke primer that you can spray to keep things coated. I personally use ospho and that usually does a good enough job for what I’m doing.
Just imagine if you paid someone to do all the work, doing it ourselves is the only way, keep plugging away, celebrate the wins.
I wouldn’t love the car if someone else did the work. I understand that some people just can’t do the work or simply don’t know how and that’s fine…. It’s just not an option for me.
welding a butt weld like that, I like to tack every 4 inches, then back step to the first tack, drop a blop right next to the first, then next to the second, etc... it prevent warps from heat... Bad Chad does the same thing... it keeps the heat from building up too much in one spot...
Correct but for this area I’m not too worried about the metal warping.
@@VWJawbreaker Yep, the channel will dictate where the metal should be, and nobody will see it anyway. I had one that was crash damaged there, and had to cut relief cuts upwards into the kickpanel 6-8 inches up, about 1.5 inches apart. I had all these dangly fingers. The channel would'nt fit otherwise. In the end, the channel dictated where the car should sit, so it didn't matter if the kickpanel was a little out of shape. Fenders still fit normally, and door opened.... F-it! :-D

I guess it depends on your skills and how much time you can set aside…. Honestly most of this was done in a Saturday.

They are a 36 grit flap disk. Aggressive, not much pressure helps keep the heat down.

36 or 40 grit flap disk. Try to aim and hit the weld only, lightly to keep heat down.
Try bouncing around abit on your welds. You are.putting a wee bit too much heat in the panels.

I got the hole punch tool from harbor freight…. Makes it quick and easy.
Far out! Cut that sucka up! Raise sawzall about halfway up the body and take out another 6 inches then reattach them heater channels.... lol!

Man I just can’t do that to this car. It’s not in my vision for the final result.
I was looking at the repair (nice job buy the way) but did you weld the inner fender to the frame pan ? Sorry if I sound ignorant, just trying to make the same repair on my car but the frame in that area is also gone, hidden well enough at time of purchase but found it soon after?
Never mind, brain fart. That’s part of the heater channel😵💫
You’re correct, that’s part of the heater channel and the inner fender area does get welded to the channel.
All good man, it’s better to ask questions to make sure we do our repairs correctly.
What gauge did you.use
Hard to remember now, been using scrap metal here and there but most was 18 and some 16 gauge I think.
