Incredibly EASY, thanks to you!. Others want to take out the whole control panels but this was super easy. My van was ice covered and I did not have the replacement part yet, so with the actuator out, I used a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter and inserted it into the "D" hole (by hand) and rotated the flap left and held it there. Then I turned on the fan and slid the lever to heat, pulled out the 1/4 adapter and the flap stayed "up" allowing my van to warm up so I could go get my part.
Thank you for this video! I bought a 2002 Windstar today for my brother. The vehicle is in awesome shape but the heat didn't work thru the vents or defroster. The heat did work in the rear zone. After watching your video I did the repair myself! The little plastic gear was the culprit! It only cost me $38.17 to do the repair and about 40 minutes of actual labor. I dropped one of the screws and it took me about 10 minutes to find where it fell! Thank you again for this detailed video!
Did this today! The coat hangers didn't work so I bought the tool for $9 at Advanced Auto. Also found a replacement actuator at the same place. Took the old one apart and the little teeth were gone all but about 6 or so. Checked the door and it moved smoothly. Thanks a lot. One suggestion is to take the glove box and take it out and place your light in that area, worked like a charm!
Your video is amazing. My husband just replaced this part the Air Blender Aucator. On his 2002 Ford Windstar cargo van. Living in South Florida he never used the heat. Last night while driving he went to use the heat to find a clucking sound a quick TH-cam search and your video fixed his problem. No mor clucking sound and the hear works. Thank you for your detailed video
I looked at several utubes concerning my 2001 Ford Windstar heater problem. First clicking sound for awhile, then month later no sound and no heat in front,. I watched this utube and followed the directions and 30 minutes later the old motor actuator is out. And I checked the damper as directed and its good. Made my own tool to remove radio using wire similar to coat hanger. Once i get new actuator and install will have heat again. Its been cold here in Pa. Best utube Ive seen on this subject, thanks alot.
Great video , fixed mine last night !!!!!!!!! I spent $7 on the radio tool and $36 on the part. The hardest part was getting my big hands in the tight spots !!!! Would like to add that I did have to unfasten a plastic fastener that held some wires in place. Just could not get the actuator in place without doing this. Thanks Again Patrick
I just wanted to thank you so much for making this video. We have a big family and not a lot of money, but thanks to you I was able to fix our heat for less then half the cost.
Fantastic! I got a quote for 2k to get it fixed. Went on Amazon got the Dorman 604-203 actuator along with the radio keys and did it in about 40 minutes. Thank you for the help!
Hello Brian - Had a no heat problem - anti freeze reservoir was at it's level - next flushed out the heater core - still no heat just blowing cold air - saw this video of yours - ordered a Windstar blend door actuator from Rock Auto now waiting for it to arrive so I can in stall it - my fingers are crossed hoping this will work for me . Thanks for sharing this video on You Tube for everyone .
I never thought I could of fixed this problem myself. The video was great $35 actuator and $6 stereo tool and my awesome wife for helping. Not having heat in Wisconsin is almost impossible. Thanks again!
Thank YOU so much ... I've had the click-click which came & went at its will, then first time I've needed heat ... none. We followed your instructions to replace accuator in less than 2 hours. The radio removal was the hardest part (we watched your hanger tool vid and got it.. but it took a bigger wire than just a hanger!) All I can say is WOW. I searched for 'Windstar no heat' and your vid popped right up!
the instructions were fantastic. I removed and replaced the actuator in 1 hour. I purchased the radio remover tool for $8, which removed the radio fast and easy. the toughest part was removing the bolts. not much room, but was able to do it. Thank you for the amazing video I fix my 2003 windstar heat with your videos help for $40 and 15 min of my time. I went to a local mechanic and the wanted $200 and it would take 2 hrs. Saved $160.

Good Stuff! My son's a mechanic- but with little interest on helping me- and it's been very cold here in Canada this winter - I think given your excellent video and demonstration I can fix that myself....Thanks!
Perfect in every way. Quick, to the point, clear, and WORKED. After seeing this video and the internal working of the actuator, I FIXED THE ACTUATOR. Thanks for a great video.
When I replaced mine, I took the heat/air panel under the radio off. I could access the actuator bolts without having to pull the lower panel. Both methods work. An easy DIY for a common Windstar problem.
Good info, i went ahead and took off the whole plastic front to have more working room and to not have to remove the radio with special tool. Just 2, 7mm screws right above where the cup holder sits and you can pop the whole front off and just unplug the radio.
Thank you so much for this video! I just replaced this in my 2001 SE Sport. My installation had one additional step. I have a power outlet on the passenger side of the lower plastic piece. After disconnecting the plastic clips holding the piece on, I needed to disconnect the wire clip for the power outlet, and then I could remove the whole U-shaped plastic piece. Just an additional since please step. Thanks again!
Great video. This helped me do the same repair today. I found that the radio actually doesn't have to be removed, except that it gave me more daylight to work. I was able to do it all from the bottom while laying on my back. It didn't take more than 45 minutes including cleaning the old soda off of that shroud! It cost the same as Patrick below.
thank you very much for sharing this repair and want to let you know that the way you make it easier to acomplish the r&r of this part. I did tried first without removing the bottom part. Well I ended dropping a screw right behind the misc.basket. so I pulled out all 4 plastic clips , removed the bottom tray and looked for the missing screw. once I found it , i assembled back everything and voila' I was done. Thanks again.
I took my actuator apart but I didn't see any broken teeth on any of the gears or arm. I tested the door and it does open and close with resistance as you show. I did buy a new actuator any way and hoping it solves my problem.
I fucking hated taking the bitch of a radio out of my grandmas 2001 model; half the time the stupid u pins got stuck or would pull out, or the track didn't line up, and then we got the wrong door actuator and had to wait three days for a new one to arrive in store, and after 3 years with no heat, and hearing no more complaints about having no heat, it was all well worth the effort, thank god.

I APPRECIATE YOU bud👍🏻👍🏻if you have more vids, I'm SURE I'll be needing and watching them🤣🤙🏻
Very well done video! Our 2000 Windstar is ticking when the AC is on, but ceases if we switch it to Heat. We think it is our Bent Door Actuator. Thanks so much for this video!
I did my 2000 Windstar actuator with this video, now I think my 2002 actuator has failed. My heat was going from hot to cold and back again, coolant was low, topped it off, same story. No clicking on this one tho, can't explain it. I'm just glad spring is around the corner...
I enjoyed your video about the Windstar repair. I'll also need a little instructions for how to replace the lighter socket which is beneath of temp. control right next to ashtray (right side). Is a 2000 Windstar and still going strong... thanks for any help.
the link for the part is the correct part right? i have been through hell going to 4 different auto part stores all giving the wrong part. the video is awesome and everything disassembled like you said. just need the right parts..
Hi there. I am an owner of windstar 03 all the way from Korea. I have been searching for the answers to my problem and I think I found it in your video. Thank you very much. Just one quick question before I place my order for the blend door actuator. First I didn't even know what it's called! But looking at the synmtoms I think it's the blend door actuator problem. I am getting "clicking sound" whenever I move the lever all the way down to COLD and up to HOT and the heater does not work. This is the blend door actuator problem, right?
Great video ...I have a '99 Windstar SEL with this same issue, but after removing the old actuator, I didn't seem to have enough room to maneuver the new one around to get the arm into the opening ...I don't seem to have nearly as much room as you have in your video. The keyhole opening was not at the same orientation as the key arm, which would require me inserting the arm, then twisting the actuator so that the screw holes line up, but there's just no room for that. Is the '99 different in some way? Now I'm afraid I stripped the opening where the arm goes from screwing around with it so much. Any ideas?
Heavy rains here! & my Windstar '99 has one well where metal latch bar is in the floor fills up w/ water 2nd well on automatic door side, wall's ceiling dry, fortunately the 2 bench seats sit in the shed. Please, any idea's?
Awesome vid. My hand would have the video shaking like crazy trying something like this. You did a great job. Is this same location for 2006 Ford Freestar?
Did you replace the whole actuator or that plastic piece. I watched and saw the test and putting it back. Please let me know. I watched one on replacing the motor part inside it.
Nice vid I was brought here from ur comment on ETCG1 video please keep making vids and don't give up. Ur doing a good thing im in school to be an auto tech
Oh I am not giving up I am only getting more popular and helping more people. Plus my videos are only getting better with better editing, dialogue and content. Thanks for the comments I think you will like the auto repair business I do.
We took out the actuator and it looked good. So we did the "test" and we could open/close the door. We put a black dot on the actuator and then re-installed it. You can see it move from noon to three and three to noon when you go hot to cold and cold to hot, but the air temp never changes. Is it possible that the actuator is turning, but not actually doing anything? Since it's keyed, we thought not, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Can't think of any other reason why we aren't getting hot air. THanks!
Yes. The problem turned out to be that there was no coolant. After refilling, we immediately got hot air. This worked for a little while and then it leaked out again. Turned out we had a bad heater core.
hi I have I few questions. my 98 Windstar has no heat first step I did was to check if the fuse was blown and it was so I changed it and it worked for a bit but then it blew again next step was I checked the motor wire and it was good and in working condition then I checked wire on the switch and changed the switch and change the resistor everything looked fine and the fan ran for a little bit but still blew the fuse. I plan on checking the wires from the motor to the fuse to look for any cracks or breaks or if its touching anything but I was wondering if I am on the right path, or if you have any ideas. Also could it possible that the motor has too much resistance or if maybe its getting too hot, I don't wan to change the blower motor unless I have to Thanks Andre
The blend door on my system broke at the connection point. I have removed the air cabin unit and can move the blend door with my hand but am having trouble removing. I dont want to break anything inside because it is all plastic. I dont know if there is enough space to move the blend door around and get it out and get the new one in properly. Is there another entry point or can I remove the plastic frame that the air cabin unit screws into? Thanks
I need to replace this part in my 2003 Ford Windstar but the design Is a little different than this one. I'm hoping that it isn't more difficult to change
Needed to know where this part was located. Hmm mine is doing something similar the rear gets cold as ice but the front blows luke warm I can see the blend door actuator move so I'm guessing it's not that causing the issue guess I'm going to be digging into the dash. Bought the van for 500 it had been unused and rats where living in it my guess is they found their way into the ac vents
can you tell me if this would be the part most likely needed if there ac blows in the front but not in the back, and the heat blows in the back but not in the front?
Question I have a Ford 1999 windstar and the heat is out and the air blows but it’s not cool air. Someone told us that a house was cut or had a tear in it. Any idea what that could be ?
my boys car only blows cold or heat thru defrost only not thru the selected vents will this solve the this problem as well or is there another actuator or a different one for ac mode? We replaced the selector switch but the same thing happens it only blows thru the defrost vents and not a lot of pressure at all just sort of a trickle.
I know this is old video but could you tell me part number for an 03 Windstar SEL please . Heat stopped working a few days ago . Rear heat works fine though
I have a 2007. Could it be possible for this motor to go bad & prop the door open partially? I'm getting heat on the driver side & not on the passenger.
Is the Blend Door Actuator what regulates the heat, even thought air is blowing through the vents? I also have a tapping noise that persists unless I slide the temperature lever into an exact spot about 3/4 inch to the right on the sliding lever that sets the temperature.
I am really interested in trying this procedure but I have never done anything like this before. I would like to try this before I take it to the mechanic but I was wondering what are the symptoms that demonstrate it is the actuator that is broken and not something else? In my Ford Windstar 2000, only cold air comes out whether I put it on the heat or the cold side. Are those symptoms that it is the actuator? Before buying the new actuator, is there a way to test if its actually the actuator that it is damaged? Also if your reply could be as simple and detailed as possible, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!
You should be able to cawl underneath there and see if the shaft on the actuator is moving or not as you turn the temp dial. Alternately you could take it out and do the same thing with the electrical connector connected. You will usually hear clicking if they are bad. Have you checked the engine coolant?
Actually nvm, I followed all the steps and "GREAT SUCCESS, VERY NICE, I LIKE" It was actually a bit hard to remove the bolts (the bottom one and the one on the right side). I also had difficulty placing the new actuator in its place due to wires in the way, eventually I found a sweet spot and got it in! Thanks man!!
Thanx for the tips. At around 2:30 into this vid you mention another vid explaining in more depth how to remove the radio using a coat hangar. I checked your channel but couldn't find it. Is it still there? Do you have a direct link?
I took the actuator motor out and took it apart and found there are no broken teeth on any of the gears I can see but the actuator does not move when I adjust the temperature and the baffle works as it should because I checked it. Think it is just a bad actuator motor? Just curious if you had any idea since you may have done a few of these. Thanks
Yes I would still change it out plug the new one in and retest. The HVAC module that controls them rarely fails if ever. Just make sure you replace it with a motorcraft unit.
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the feedback, I put 12v to the actuator and it didn't do anything so I think the motor in it is junk. Got a new actuator coming.
did u replace the gear ?? or just remove it? Im having this issue with my van right now and im freezing , i need to get this fixed pronto . so do i just take it apart and take out the broken piece and then put it back in or do i need to change the whole unit ??? any ones ans is welcome as well as the the owner of this video please and thanks ahead of time
can someone confirm me please if this actuator is for Front vents? not the defroster, not for feet down. i am talking about driver side face vent near steering Wheel, just on top of radio/cd system. thanks
I just changed the actuator motor now my van won't start. I think it has something to do with the anti theft. any suggestions. battery dead but when I try to jump start it the flashers and anti theft just flash very fast but won't turn over. Once I remove cables the battery is already dead.
canson70 You shouldn't of touched anything that could have an affect on starting. It just sounds like your battery is dead and won't take a charge either the only fix for that is to replace the battery as the plates get sulfated over.
Any ideas?
Did you fix it?
Great video! I dreaded doing this. You make it look easy.
Thank you so much for this video. I have heat now and I only had to pay for the cost of the part! :D
Wanted to follow up. Followed the directions in less than 7 minutes I had heat again.
Thanks for the comments I think you will like the auto repair business I do.
thanks alot ur my life saver. now i have heat in van and my daughter she is warm 👍
Thanks so much!!! and the coat hanger radio trick worked too!!! Nice and warm ;)
THanks!
Did you fix the problem?
Yes. The problem turned out to be that there was no coolant. After refilling, we immediately got hot air. This worked for a little while and then it leaked out again. Turned out we had a bad heater core.
Denise Stewart Windstars + low coolant = warped heads
Do you know of any way to make sure it is the actuator and not the switch? Is it in most cases the actuator? My hot air stopped about a week ago.
hi
I have I few questions.
my 98 Windstar has no heat
first step I did was to check if the fuse was blown and it was so I changed it and it worked for a bit but then it blew again
next step was I checked the motor wire and it was good and in working condition then I checked wire on the switch and changed the switch and change the resistor everything looked fine and the fan ran for a little bit but still blew the fuse.
I plan on checking the wires from the motor to the fuse to look for any cracks or breaks or if its touching anything but I was wondering if I am on the right path, or if you have any ideas.
Also could it possible that the motor has too much resistance or if maybe its getting too hot, I don't wan to change the blower motor unless I have to
Thanks
Andre
The blend door on my system broke at the connection point. I have removed the air cabin unit and can move the blend door with my hand but am having trouble removing. I dont want to break anything inside because it is all plastic. I dont know if there is enough space to move the blend door around and get it out and get the new one in properly. Is there another entry point or can I remove the plastic frame that the air cabin unit screws into? Thanks
I’m about to try this out!! I’ll come back with my results
Rear heat works fine though
worked like a charm... thanks very much
I have a 2007.
Jeannie111523 Yes your actuator has failed, follow this video to replace it.
AWESOME video!!! Thanks very much!
Thanx for the tips.
At around 2:30 into this vid you mention another vid explaining in more depth how to remove the radio using a coat hangar. I checked your channel but couldn't find it.
Is it still there? Do you have a direct link?

I'm working on a freestar. I figured it out. No special tool required. :D
I really appreciate the video. Helped a lot.
my heater blows cold, makes ticking sound. started right after a friend "fixed" something on my shift column. any things i could check? thanks.
mexicatl16 that's the gear on the servo motor skipping on the other gear, just replace the little box and you'll be good
We have that same problem. I thought that's what it might be.
hannah weaver yup, it has little plastic gears that over the years get brittle and just snap inside, I'm 100% sure that's your problem.
I know this is an old video but could this be the reason the ac only blows through the defrosters and not the front vents?
my heater and Ac works but when I turn it on it makes a loud clicking sound from underneath the hood is my compresser going bad?
Thanks so much dude. I think you may have saved me this winter. 😉
On a 99 wind star what does it mean if there is a slow coolant leak n now there is no heat, and or defrost?it’s just blowing cold air
Got a new actuator coming.
thank you ford tech for you video you save my $240
Do I need to disconnect the car battery b4 replacing this?
16 penny nails work to pull the radio. It's best to grind the points almost all the way off because if the nails go in too far it wont work period.
With my 01 windstar the air door goes from the middle of the dash to the defrost vents when I have the AC on.
did u replace the gear ?? or just remove it? Im having this issue with my van right now and im freezing , i need to get this fixed pronto . so do i just take it apart and take out the broken piece and then put it back in or do i need to change the whole unit ??? any ones ans is welcome as well as the the owner of this video please and thanks ahead of time
+Puffy Jo I removed the gear to test the door. Once the actuator has failed there are no parts to fix it you must replace the entire actuator unit.
ok thank you very much
Puffy Jo I did the door test and the key slid all the way is so im guessing thats the problem how can i fix it? and the actuator is fine.
When these fail is a notable symptom (other than lack of heat) a persistent clicking noise?
+robert rukidding yes
+FordTechMakuloco Thanks!!
There’s gotta be a way to get that out without the radio tool?
Never Touched The Radio , With My Small Girly Hands I Was Able To Get From The Bottom Too !!! 🤣😅😂
can someone confirm me please if this actuator is for Front vents? not the defroster, not for feet down. i am talking about driver side face vent near steering Wheel, just on top of radio/cd system.
thanks
thanks man now my heater works perfectly
You made my day, thank you so much! I had the same problem.
You could upload a video to repair the cruise control system?
Thank you 🇺🇸
How did you diagnose the issue though?
Can someone please help me with a part number. All I can seem to find is the auxiliary blend door which is for rear heat and ac.
I have a 99 Windstar XL would I follow the same steps in uninstalling & installing the Actuator ? @Fordtechmakuloco
