      I couldn't have said it better, Emma. This was a superb display of total skill with the hand shears. I was waiting for at least one cut, but at least it wasn't a speed competition.

      Colin Gantiglew Even shearing much faster the sheep shouldn't be cut but this was shorn slowly for educational purposes. I will try to upload a speed shorn sheep with the blades in the near future.

    hard to imagine that millions of sheep were shorn with blades, i saw a station rubbish dump near bourke NSW and counted over a 100 old rusty blades from the days when power driven shearing gear was not invented. awesome to see such a clean job, jacki howe would be proud of you as i am

    Amazing job, such huge blades and not one cut or drop of blood from the sheep. I see guys using electric shears and the poor sheep usually looks like he went 10 rounds with a weed wacker when they're done. Amazing skill.

    My Grandad used to do this for a job. I forget how many he could do in a day but apparently it was impressive. I just picked up a very nice looking pair of old hand shears at a second hand shop. I've got 2 sheep in my paddock that are looking pretty woolly... poor buggers 😂

  • @sophiab6486
    @sophiab6486 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    She is so calm and comfortable the whole time you shear her. Those blades are a real extension of your hand. As a beginner, I would have to wear a metal link glove on my left hand (with a cheap-o glove covering the links so the ewes hair doesn’t get caught) and take care to memorize the contour of my sheep. I believe I am more liable to cut myself than the sheep.
    Could you please upload a video on blade sharpening and maintenance? For instance, how to tell when the blades are getting too dull to work with (how they feel), a reputable brand of ahears, and how many sheep can be shorn on average with one pair of shears before the shears are no good... I wish I could learn these things in person. You are the kind of shearer I want to be: strong, calm, careful. It would be amazing if you could also include a rundown on how to skirt the fleece and discard bad stuff. This sweet angel’s seconds didn’t look too bad to me. There are a few shearers on here that have completely discarded them. I imagined them so much more matted and dirty. But I guess it depends on how well you care for your sheep.
    It was interesting to see how short she was docked as well. I don’t know if I could dock that short. Do you guys achieve that with a branding method or with an electric docker that cauterizes? I have never shorn a sheep before, but would like to own a few Corrisdale, Clun Forest and Black Welsh Mountain sheep when I can purchase land. I love sheep. I love spinning and fiber arts. And there is nothing on earth finer than a pair of dry wool socks when you need them.

    • @sophiab6486
      @sophiab6486 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes typing this on my phone without glasses was a mistake. There are loads of errors and typos. I was wondering if you guys used a banding* method.
      Also, I was wondering if you just have to “know” where landmarks are (like the pizzle) or if you can feel it and the acronym with your hand through all that wool to get a sense of where it is on that particular sheep. I am a firm believer that animals shouldn’t be nicked at all in this process. It takes as long as it takes in my opinion. If you are new to it or a hobby farmer you might have more time to spare anyway.

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Sophia. Thanks for your interest. We use rubber rings for docking. As for sharpening videos I have some on my TH-cam and my father also has them on shear sharp nz TH-cam or Facebook page. These shears are from burgon and ball in england. The shears require about 2hours of professional work to be good enough to shear easily with which me and my father do and sell through shear sharp nz and ship globally. A good pair of shears should last 800-1000 sheep if looked after properly. Where are you based as we run shearing schools in Europe, the UK, NZ and occasional Australia?

    I've never sheared a sheep so my question may be stupid. What is the reason someone would use these scissors vs using an electric shear?

    • @HerminatorOwnage
      @HerminatorOwnage 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, the handpiece (the electric shears) generally shears the wool alot thinner, whereas the blades (used in this video) leave a little bit of wool on the sheep, usually blades are more popular in New Zealand as it gets colder over there, and leaves a little bit of warmth for the sheep, as the wool is left longer.

    • @undersixty
      @undersixty 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +undersixty haha, after 4 generations of family shearing history, you tend to learn some things

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also in South Africa they blade shear in a lot of places where they either don't have power or that labour is cheaper than power.

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also not only is the wool left longer but it grows back faster as the wool fibres are not as disturbed under the skin. Many ppl say that a blade shorn sheep will grow an extra years worth of fleece in its life due to this.

      Меня нанимают фермеры чтобы стричь своих овец. Породы попадаются разные-грубошерстные в основном. Иногда мериносы тоже

    I hav a pair of 20$ shears like those but smaller. I use them to give dog haircuts in the summer. i bent them open to sharpen them and bent them back together. Now they don't cut. Help? How to maintain and repair bent shears? lol

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pancakebut without experience it is hard to know how to set shears properly. if you visit Shear Sharp NZ on Facebook you will find some photos to help. I will re share the photos so they are easy to find.

      Pancakebut it's possible the blades aren't shaped right. they should each curve in a little as they flex at the points.

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      sheep are much calmer when being blade shorn due to less noise, vibrations and heat on the skin. also this is an expert shearer who knows how best to hold the sheep to keep them calm.

      not here. I helped shear some sheep over the weekend. we used blades. we had to tie them by the legs to keep them from taking off. where do you think they purchased there blades? i hope to become this fast as time goes by.

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should never need to the sheep to shear then if you have experienced shearers. The blades are from shearsharpnz. Based in new Zealand and the UK. We have shown in several countries and have never needed to tie a sheep up.

    What happens if you cut a sheep?

    • @allantheshearer
      @allantheshearer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Normally there are only small cuts which heal quickly. Any larger cuts are treated with antiseptic and stitched if required though this is rare. It is not in the shearers interest to hurt the sheep in any way as this would cause it to fight making shearing harder.
