There is a lot of content surrounding that question in Forsaken too, for example there's even a legendary (note: not even exotic) energy hand cannon called Thin Line, which the little caption thing says: "Sometimes you forget which side you're on" and even has lore to it, in which your Ghost starts saying stuff like: "I'm afraid of what you'll become".

Coming back to this after everything that’s happened since Cayde died is just astounding. The tone shift Destiny took after we lost him, the mounting stakes that have progressively gotten higher and continue to do so, and all the nuances of our blurred lines of morality and our alliances. From an in-universe story perspective, I wonder how Cayde would have handled everything from Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and now Witch Queen had he still been here. Having him probably could have helped ease the tensions and his experience definitely would have helped, but given the cosmic horror we're about to face, maybe it's almost enviable that Cayde isn't around to witness... the Witness.

I think one of the most heartbreaking things is to see how our guardian reacted once Cayde died... he/she didn’t know what to do. Usually we have our ghost or our instinct telling what to do or react but when it comes to death nothing.
"This must be why the vanguard doesn't like it when Cayde leaves the tower."- Ghost, after Cayde got stuck in the vex teleporter during the red war. This game feels so different, almost like it's D1 again.

And in the end, Cayde had to go? It also, I just realised, is a mirror of when you meet the guardians during the Destiny 2 prologue. You meet Cayde first, then you get to the main plaza and find Zavala, then you go to find the Speaker and you have a run in with Ikora. I've also noticed that the dlc has gone in a sort of similar pattern as being introduced to the races in Destiny 1. The first dlc ever, The Dark Below, focused on the Hive. Then we got the House of Wolves dlc. Then we got The Taken King, which I guess you could call it the cabal dlc, since other than the Taken they were involved a lot in the dlc, especially before and after you get to the Dreadnought. Then, Destiny 2 has its base game, involved on the Cabal, and then the Curse of Osiris dlc focused on the Vex. Then we got the Warmind dlc, focused on the Hive. Now this. The main bad guy here is one of the awoken who "assisted" you in Destiny 1, and there was Fallen that was under his command in that game. So this would be the Fallen dlc. Have you noticed how dlc 2 and Forsaken follow dlc 1 And 2 from Destiny 1? Hive then Fallen? If this continues like this, it could mean a Taken dlc being the next expansion. You could take the cycle like this. Vex, then Hive, then Fallen, then Taken, then Cabal. It fits so perfectly. Destiny 1 base game (Vex), then The Dark Below (Hive), House of Wolves (Fallen), The Taken King (Taken), and lastly Destiny 2 base game (Cabal)(the Rise of Iron dlc was technically a Fallen dlc, but then again it kind of was a mix of things). The cycle then repeats, Curse of Osiris (Vex), Warmind (Hive), and now Forsaken (Fallen). That feels a little bit too coincidental, doesn't it?
Ya now that you point it out, it definitely seems too coincidental, but on the other hand Bungie can do what ever they like. If the so desired they could leave Cayde returning to his Beloved Ace. As selfish as it may seem, I really hope that is not the case.

The DLC tried way too hard to make me question my morality. Like, all those parts where it talks about light and dark and good and bad? 'Do you know which side you're on?' ....Yeah, definitely. The Guardian has killed several enemies with the intent of destroying the world. It's not like avenging his/her friend's death is going to make her some super evil monster. When the Fanatic is ranting about how we killed his friends and didn't care, I was like "... Seriously? Like you didn't kill my friend and then all mock me for it?" Like, what? The whole deal about light and dark being a blur came across as rushed and stifling to me. Maybe that's just my opinion, but hey. Whatever.
Thats the whole point, there is a difference between killing someone who is a direct threat to the Universe, vs killing for Revenge, as the ghost said Uldren was beaten, defenseless.

Again we were not hunting innocents maybe the motives may have been fueled by what the character could perceive as their own righteous fury, but it’s not like these were baby hugging, orphanage building, charity donating, friendly people. Even in the end one could perceive killing Uldren as a mercy. He unleashed the Destiny equivalent of a shoggoth in his quest to save his sister who’s voice he’s hearing in his head and you know what some of his first words were, “where’s my sister?” Your character hears his remarks after this hesitates and after a bit of thinking squares up. Thanks to the fact that our character is now mute again for potentially another whole game this leaves our character’s thoughts and growth up to us unless stated otherwise or retconned in. TL;DR Sure we were out for revenge, but maybe the main character learned a bit about themselves at the end there and made the trigger pull for a better reason. Not that killing Cayde-6 wasn’t a good reason, but still.
I'd like one of these expansions to ask if the Guardians ever considered diplomacy or otherwise ending this endless warring. I'm convinced that Fallen and even some Cabal could be convinced to become Guardians and join the fight against severe threats like the Hive and Vex.
It’s kind of nice/ironicthat a Fallen helps you avenge Cayde. If I remember correctly, Cayde fought along side a female Fallen and she died in the fight. It’s fitting that a fallen helps avenge him after he dies.

I love Nolan North, but replacing Nathon Fillion as Cayde-6 makes it feel like you're on an adventure with a PG-13 Deadpool. Nolan already voices the ghost in the game so having two lead roles for the same actor doesn't help either. The appeal of Cayde's character is that he is the cocky gunslinger who usually makes mistakes and annoys the rest of his team. Here he is written to be more silly than cocky and with Nolan North it doesn't come across as serious as Nathan Fillion's performance did. You could tell when Fillion was being sarcastic and when he wasn't kidding around anymore. Idk maybe expecting a consistent tone with characters that don't even last that long is expecting too much from a game you need to buy $70 worth of dlc for.
@imnotmexican1987 bungie said cayde isn't coming back. They permanently killed him off to market the DLC. However, now he is dead and not coming back, bungie no longer has the comic relief to keep a lot of the players grind through their barebones stories. Even this story was horrendously simplistic, out gaurdian hasn't permanently found his voice (only gave a line and a word in this story. Didn't even say anything in the last scene) and there is nothing to draw players into future content.

I just realized this, that wasn't the sound of Cayde's gun when Uldren died. It was Petra's. Compare the two shot's where he and Cayde die. They are different. So we didn't kill Uldren!

Rip cayde I love D2 so much I'm always a Destiny fan forever I love the cutscenes I love all male & females characters even the bad guys & girls I love everything about destiny
But why the fuck would Cayde pull out his ghost while being surrounded by enemies? I know he's unpredictable and extreme with a passion for getting in trouble, but to have survived as long as he did you would think he'd be more aware and thoughtful especially after taking a beating. Really the only issue I have with the writing in this dlc.
From the moment I saw Cayde die I wanted to revenge and to bring justice to him but, I began to lose myself the more I went on this quest. As a hunter Cayde was like a mentor to me and the best danm vanguard in the game (no offense titans and warlocks). Although torward the end I just felt sorry for Uldren, I hated him but, felt sorry for him nonetheless. His sister made him what he is wehn you think about it. I'll miss Cayde and I'll get started on my titan and warlock.
Light and dark are two sides of the same coin. Fallen, hive, awoken, cabal, human, Exo. Neither good or evil, all influenced by light and dark. Mara sacrificed herself during taken war to use ascendent realm "dark" to become a true queen, a taken queen. The vex in the black garden tried to create their own traveller like power by simulating darkness. Ghaul wanted to steal light and pissed off the traveller, but in reality the traveller lives to protect both light and dark or balance both. When the scorn steal the travelers light however we are left to prove ourselves by helping return it, and it's made pretty clear on Io when the traveller finally speaks that this is the case. Cade's death wasn't in vain his light returned to make the traveller stronger than ever, and soon it's going to need the strength. Even now it seems like the traveller is preparing for a final stand against darkness, maybe the civilizations of the traveller will come together for that.
I have to wonder if Uldren is actually dead. I've learned from everything I've ever watched or played, if you don't see a body, the person ain't dead. We didn't see a body, we heard a gunshot. Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed by this story, so far at least. We still have no idea where the actual Queen is, or if she's even alive. We still don't know how Uldren got to where he was, or how he allied with the Barons. The Barons themselves were a bit disappointing too, aside from a couple good boss fights (the rest were just: kill adds, shoot head, kill adds, shoot head). What the hell was that big ass chimera?! What was the point of all that?! I guess we'll find out in the raid, but I'm not very impressed yet by anything other than the amazing cinematic quality, but it's Blur Studios, so of course it's amazing.
Jonathan Parker i had to do some digging to refresh my memory on everything from Destiny and the other DLCs because it’s been a while since I’ve played, but what I’ve come up with is after the attack on the reef and everyone either died or fled etc somewhere down the line Uldron came in contact with the fallen of a planet which i don’t remember, pulled the trojan horse shtick, and killed the boss man around there and took over. Well i can only guess somewhere down the line there was a conflict and the normal fallen left him so he ended up finding all these barons and he raised his own undead army out of it. With his desperation came madness and insanity so somehow he ended up in the same scenario as with the big DooM eye thing and the eyepatch girl arrested him and inprisoned him until someone broke him out. Just my theory of trying to piece everything together
Okay, so I got to the Dreaming City last night, and now I'm nothing but excited for the raid and lore. It's an ahamkara, I'm sure of that. There's nothing else it could be, an honest to god, Taken corrupted ahamkara. Mara is... something, I'm still not entirely sure. Dead? Alive? Between? Whatever, the point is, I think they saved the best for the endgame.

Master Of Recipe The main plot was not what I was focusing on. I've seen more video game and video game stories than you probably ever have, and visited every major and relatively good minor franchise. What I was focusing on was the deliverance, the dialogue chosen, the music and the subtle reactions of the characters. Anytime our character spoke, they made it mean something. That's what I was moved by and that's what I enjoyed.
Anni Burgoyne i agree with you to an extent. They chose the guardian dialogue....sparingly, but it makes sense. If you want a moving moment though watch when Geralt sees Ciri in the witcher 3.

....Yeah, definitely. The Guardian has killed several enemies with the intent of destroying the world. It's not like avenging his/her friend's death is going to make her some super evil monster. When the Fanatic is ranting about how we killed his friends and didn't care, I was like "... Seriously? Like you didn't kill my friend and then all mock me for it?" Like, what?
The whole deal about light and dark being a blur came across as rushed and stifling to me. Maybe that's just my opinion, but hey. Whatever.
Thats the whole point, there is a difference between killing someone who is a direct threat to the Universe, vs killing for Revenge, as the ghost said Uldren was beaten, defenseless.

CabooseIsGod And at the end of the day its all leading up to the extinction of the awoken. Again we were not hunting innocents maybe the motives may have been fueled by what the character could perceive as their own righteous fury, but it’s not like these were baby hugging, orphanage building, charity donating, friendly people. Even in the end one could perceive killing Uldren as a mercy. He unleashed the Destiny equivalent of a shoggoth in his quest to save his sister who’s voice he’s hearing in his head and you know what some of his first words were, “where’s my sister?” Your character hears his remarks after this hesitates and after a bit of thinking squares up. Thanks to the fact that our character is now mute again for potentially another whole game this leaves our character’s thoughts and growth up to us unless stated otherwise or retconned in.
TL;DR Sure we were out for revenge, but maybe the main character learned a bit about themselves at the end there and made the trigger pull for a better reason. Not that killing Cayde-6 wasn’t a good reason, but still.
I'd like one of these expansions to ask if the Guardians ever considered diplomacy or otherwise ending this endless warring.
I'm convinced that Fallen and even some Cabal could be convinced to become Guardians and join the fight against severe threats like the Hive and Vex.
It’s kind of nice/ironicthat a Fallen helps you avenge Cayde. If I remember correctly, Cayde fought along side a female Fallen and she died in the fight. It’s fitting that a fallen helps avenge him after he dies.
I noticed that Cayde is the only character that has goofy sound effect whenever he suddenly emerges from below the screen
Btw, i wouldve suggested talking to the vanilla vendors around the system, they all have thoughts on Cayde... and Uldren's death

I love Nolan North, but replacing Nathon Fillion as Cayde-6 makes it feel like you're on an adventure with a PG-13 Deadpool. Nolan already voices the ghost in the game so having two lead roles for the same actor doesn't help either. The appeal of Cayde's character is that he is the cocky gunslinger who usually makes mistakes and annoys the rest of his team. Here he is written to be more silly than cocky and with Nolan North it doesn't come across as serious as Nathan Fillion's performance did. You could tell when Fillion was being sarcastic and when he wasn't kidding around anymore. Idk maybe expecting a consistent tone with characters that don't even last that long is expecting too much from a game you need to buy $70 worth of dlc for.

@imnotmexican1987 bungie said cayde isn't coming back. They permanently killed him off to market the DLC. However, now he is dead and not coming back, bungie no longer has the comic relief to keep a lot of the players grind through their barebones stories. Even this story was horrendously simplistic, out gaurdian hasn't permanently found his voice (only gave a line and a word in this story. Didn't even say anything in the last scene) and there is nothing to draw players into future content.
Not just best, but literally the only likeable character. If they killed off Zavala or Ikora no one would care at all. Id care more about a sweeper bot. Glad I finally left my abuser and didnt buy this

Rip cayde I love D2 so much I'm always a Destiny fan forever I love the cutscenes I love all male & females characters even the bad guys & girls I love everything about destiny
But why the fuck would Cayde pull out his ghost while being surrounded by enemies? I know he's unpredictable and extreme with a passion for getting in trouble, but to have survived as long as he did you would think he'd be more aware and thoughtful especially after taking a beating. Really the only issue I have with the writing in this dlc.
From the moment I saw Cayde die I wanted to revenge and to bring justice to him but, I began to lose myself the more I went on this quest. As a hunter Cayde was like a mentor to me and the best danm vanguard in the game (no offense titans and warlocks). Although torward the end I just felt sorry for Uldren, I hated him but, felt sorry for him nonetheless. His sister made him what he is wehn you think about it. I'll miss Cayde and I'll get started on my titan and warlock.

Light and dark are two sides of the same coin. Fallen, hive, awoken, cabal, human, Exo. Neither good or evil, all influenced by light and dark. Mara sacrificed herself during taken war to use ascendent realm "dark" to become a true queen, a taken queen. The vex in the black garden tried to create their own traveller like power by simulating darkness. Ghaul wanted to steal light and pissed off the traveller, but in reality the traveller lives to protect both light and dark or balance both. When the scorn steal the travelers light however we are left to prove ourselves by helping return it, and it's made pretty clear on Io when the traveller finally speaks that this is the case. Cade's death wasn't in vain his light returned to make the traveller stronger than ever, and soon it's going to need the strength. Even now it seems like the traveller is preparing for a final stand against darkness, maybe the civilizations of the traveller will come together for that.

I have to wonder if Uldren is actually dead. I've learned from everything I've ever watched or played, if you don't see a body, the person ain't dead. We didn't see a body, we heard a gunshot.
Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed by this story, so far at least. We still have no idea where the actual Queen is, or if she's even alive. We still don't know how Uldren got to where he was, or how he allied with the Barons. The Barons themselves were a bit disappointing too, aside from a couple good boss fights (the rest were just: kill adds, shoot head, kill adds, shoot head). What the hell was that big ass chimera?! What was the point of all that?! I guess we'll find out in the raid, but I'm not very impressed yet by anything other than the amazing cinematic quality, but it's Blur Studios, so of course it's amazing.

Jonathan Parker i had to do some digging to refresh my memory on everything from Destiny and the other DLCs because it’s been a while since I’ve played, but what I’ve come up with is after the attack on the reef and everyone either died or fled etc somewhere down the line Uldron came in contact with the fallen of a planet which i don’t remember, pulled the trojan horse shtick, and killed the boss man around there and took over. Well i can only guess somewhere down the line there was a conflict and the normal fallen left him so he ended up finding all these barons and he raised his own undead army out of it. With his desperation came madness and insanity so somehow he ended up in the same scenario as with the big DooM eye thing and the eyepatch girl arrested him and inprisoned him until someone broke him out. Just my theory of trying to piece everything together
Okay, so I got to the Dreaming City last night, and now I'm nothing but excited for the raid and lore. It's an ahamkara, I'm sure of that. There's nothing else it could be, an honest to god, Taken corrupted ahamkara. Mara is... something, I'm still not entirely sure. Dead? Alive? Between? Whatever, the point is, I think they saved the best for the endgame.
New lights will never be able to know all of this...save for in videos that they prolly won't fully understand.

You must not have played many video games. The story is actually quite generic. It's not bad but it ain't anything amazing.
Master Of Recipe The main plot was not what I was focusing on. I've seen more video game and video game stories than you probably ever have, and visited every major and relatively good minor franchise. What I was focusing on was the deliverance, the dialogue chosen, the music and the subtle reactions of the characters. Anytime our character spoke, they made it mean something. That's what I was moved by and that's what I enjoyed.
Anni Burgoyne i agree with you to an extent. They chose the guardian dialogue....sparingly, but it makes sense. If you want a moving moment though watch when Geralt sees Ciri in the witcher 3.
