Sean Juhl is a senior at the Juilliard School studying with Carol Rodland. He won first prize in the 2019 Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition, and performed the John Harbison Viola Concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. He is a fellow at Music Academy of the West 2021.
Chinese-American violist Sean Juhl first began studying the violin with his mother Ching Juhl at age four. He made the switch to viola when he was 14, and has since performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player in venues around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Carnegie Hall in New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, and Smetana Hall in Prague.
An avid chamber and orchestral musician, Sean Juhl participated in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, and is also an alumnus of the Perlman Music Program. He has served as a principal violist with the Juilliard Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra-USA, and enjoys reading and playing video games asides from his studies. His past teachers include Toby Appel, Victor Basis, Joey Corpus, and Bela Horvath.
Shortly after this video, Sean Juhl won audition with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and he will join the orchestra in June 2022.

such amazing playing! just wondering if you have any tips on bow control? i noticed how well your spiccato is and i have an audition coming up that has a lot of fast spiccato in the repetoire.

This is Ching Juhl, Sean’s mom. Are you a violinist or violist? Which section that has lots of spiccato? In general, you need to find the best bow bouncing point, middle or upper middle. String crossing, shifting, left fingers being independent yet light and the pressure of the bow all contribute to the smoothness of the spiccato.

Sounds great! I'm curious, who made your viola and bow?

    • @JuhlMedia

The viola is 16 5/8 inch in size and it was bought from a private person with no certificate. No one knows who made it, not even Charles Beare. The bow is made by Michael Yetz, an American bow maker. Thanks for asking hgd.
