Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

4:26 a "relatively" simpler, but much cleaner edge method to do this is to set them in the lathe, as you did and score the cut line with a thread cutting tooth set parallel with the face of the chuck. Then you take them out, use snips to cut (preferably so you can use the discards for something else later) a 90 degree line almost to the score line and then simply bend and snap the discard part out. The finish piece will require a very light sanding on a block to get rid of the edge, but will have a perfect flush meeting surface to the next piece.
We do this all the time when making brass globes, which are surprisingly difficult to find (at least, cheaply) for repairing old chandeliers and roof top features.

Credit to Adam to pulling it off (as usual) but Monday morning quarterbacking here, you had the hole in the top of the of the "balls" already. I would have made up a quick mandrel and chucked that in the lathe. Then you could have parted off at exactly where you wanted it without the craziness of a cut-off wheel and leaving a superior edge in the process. Always good to see other people's approach to solving the same problem. Great build.

I've made spheres from copper sheet metal and I would recommend adding a weight to the bottom so it stays upright.
You have weight at the top which makes it harder because you need more at the bottom.
You have the finishing done already for this project and that makes my method impossible. But...
I add the weight before joining the two halves together. I clean the bottom of the sphere with acid and steel wool, then I add an appropriate amount of lead and melt it in the bottom of the sphere.
If I want a solid sphere I solder it together on the lathe. I put solder in the sphere and affix it into the lathe with both sides clamping together. Start it at a slow speed and start heating the joint until the solder stops rattling inside. Then give it a few seconds with heat while it's rotating. Then let it cool down a bit while the lathe is still turning.
Then I check if it's solid by dropping it on the ground from a cm and I listen if it rings or sounds dull. If it sounds dull the solder didn't do it's job.
Thank you Adam, you are always a wealth of knowledge, I hope you see this comment and get more ideas.

I too find it fascinating, to own the thing otherwise thought impossible for non royalty to own, in a kind of stick it to them kind of way. But it also reveals the question of what's the point of all of this pomp, it's all an illusion. Then there's a fascination of watching a master craftsman. You truly are a good guy Adam.

Well, idk if it was really impossible for “non-royalty” to own these things because you could always build yourself a replica (granted, you had to be able to afford it but that position wasn’t always exclusive to the monarch, besides not all these jewels are relatively that expensive: the Crown of Romania is made out of steel, for example, but it’s a specific kind of steel obtained in a specific context) but at the same time the real jewels were made out of certain materials in a certain context and have been used and worshipped for centuries so would your replica really matter if it had no symbolic value 🤔 Nowadays they’re not really owned by the royals anyway, rather by the state and they’re as much a symbol of the monarchy as they are of the country itself

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chulapas. And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

Probably it's burning foam not sure why he's doing that with so many better options in his shop. Like clay, Playdough or a vice. But the flux is probably way worse anyway after a few hours your nose will burn. Your fingers will also get raw hangnails from the vaporized acid flux.
