Madoka Magica: **gets made**
Literally every anime studio that was running out of ideas: *I can milk you*
This video is overstating the change. Yes, the grim dark magical girl copycats are a dime a dozen now but there were plenty of mature magical girl shows back in the day too. And they did not all depend on the same death gimmick Madoka and it’s clones did.
I mean Magical Girl Ore is a whole different level to Madoka
I got a 666
@@lenleon3699 I agree, madoka spawned clones (wixoss anyone?) in attempts to milk it, some poorer than others (mahou shoujo site feels like someone saw madoka and thought death was all that it was about, and decided to do only that but more edgy. At least wixoss tried to play at the same themes of despair as madoka did, even if subpar and lacking any of the surprise the unexpected genre-shift in madoka had). But there were dark parts of even the most iconic earlier ones shown in this video (though I don't remember enough of cardcaptor and sailor to actually point out anything specific).
Nanoha and her friends might have still had plot armor (so not that much death), but they still encountered tragedies, and side characters lacked it. And the spinoff were literally about bully-victim with superhuman strength snapping and crushing skulls in school.
It's free real estate
Tbh Sailor Moon had a bunch of dark stuff happening in it. I feel like many ppl tend to forget it cuz of how ppl gloss over and watch the first few episodes or read the first few chapters. Only difference is it was a lot more subtle than a lot of "dark" magical girl shows today. Also there were just a lot of messed up stuff happening in Sailor Moon, tht if u rewatched the show as an adult u would just go "how TF was this a kids anime??"
Princess tutu was also pretty dark so idk why everyone keeps thinking tht the older magical girl shows were lighthearted.
Madoka Magica is the only modern one which handled the dark themes well with its unique and unsettling ost and animation (i loved how they animated the enemies) without trying to come off as edgy.
Would have added WEP if it didn't have such a shitty and uncohesive story later on. It had so much potential.
Welp thts just my opinion.
u have a point cus sailor moon may be deprived of all of the blood spilling and crap but imagine having to watch everyone u love get killed in front of you and your not able to do anything
and ntm she kills hers short after!
have you ever read the manga? I got the first 2 books when I was 13 ... and it was hard. The last 6 books are just brutal and then I was like 16. I never told my mum about it, because I wanted the rest of the books, but damn. That is no Kids material. The last books should be marked PG18 in my opinion. The TV-Show was sooooo mellowed down compared to it.
@@coronastern i have actually and yea its wayyyy darker but the og anime is still fucked up when compared to other modern magical girl animes (except madoka magica) tht try way too hard to be edgy
@@coronasternthe manga was always meant for young teenage girls and young women though tbh, it was never meant for small children. even the original anime wasn't meant for small kids even though the dic dub made it come off that way, and even though it's toned down, i think it was still more suitable for preteens at youngest to watch it esp since the series progressively gets darker in all incarnations
Truth. Literally all the Inner Senshi (all there were at the time) *died* at the end of the first series. True, re-incarnation is part of their destiny but they didn't know that at the time and they all (temporarily?) lost their memories of each-other.
[Spoilers for sailor moon]
I think this video is pretty accurate to how brutal these new magical girl shows can get, but there were some parts of original magical girl shows, specifically sailor moon, that were pretty dark. In act 1 of sailor moon near the end, all of sailor moons friends die brutally, one by one, and she just has to watch them. Even her lover is dead and she has barely any hope. In the manga you also learn that before she was reborn on earth, princess serenity killed herself 😬 I could keep going but sailor moon is a lot deeper than a cutesy magical girl show. The reason that it's different from these shows is that it takes an optimistic approach instead of being straight up torture corn.
Wtf, even sailor Moon is dark ?!
I checked the end of sailor Moon and I found that even if all magical girl except sailor Moon died, they all resurrected, so it isn't this dark, but for a "kids show" it's weird that there are deaths...

To be completely honest, when you really think about what it actually means to be a magical girl, you understand that no matter how it’s portrayed it’s a somewhat dark subject matter. Madoka Magica did a great job showing this but I think that it’s true for all magical girl animes.

They're child soldiers, but it's magic so it's ok 🙂

It’s a bit different, but I love it
tbh it feels like "darker" magical girls shows today are trying to replicate madoka's success as an anime by being more edgier and gorier (but without the good writing)
I agree, it isn't to make it darker, it's for make you sympathize with the characters and have good writing (sorry for the english)
You do know about this! 👌
Madoka is a good anime, even without it being a magical girl. Like I Madoka tried to portray innocent but with "adult hardship", Like how is it moral to tell little girls to fight monster?
So yeah I agree, lots of Magical girl show now miss the point. it's not about being edgy or gory... it's having a good theme/message/story first and that happen to be a bit dark.
Honestly their endings doesn't make any sense at all-

5:48 I will never ever forget this scene till the day I die. Mami had the coolest weapons ever. I think it's the coolest fighting style or weapons whatever in all of anime.
I'm so annoyed they didn't give us more of her.
They give you more mami in rebellion. It is that homura vs mami scene. Totally epic.
@@laulau2020 Funny part about this fight scene is that the storyboard artist was told to make a very short fight scene so they can get on with the movie, but the artist loved Homura's character so much that he made a 100 page storyboard until the directors had to tell him to stop and cut out a ton of the writing
Needless to say, he's a chad.
I must disagree with you there, personally i think homura has the best weapon(s) because they are real firearm. i love Mami's guns but they r still just fictional, magic-based weapons. Homuras is just based, her firearms are american-based, and it truly brings a gritty feel for the scene. You can outright cosplay her and bring your favorite M4 and its canon.
One important thing to note though is that when the whole series is as cutesy and fun throughout like in Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor, it makes those dark and emotional moments all the more powerful due to the contrast.
Chibiusa. The deaths of the first sailors. Moon kingdom arc. All the deaths of the henchmens etc... Its dark when it HAS to be. Not just cause it has to.
Vordox all the newer series try to “subvert” the genre’s convention by going dark. Not realizing that madoka only worked because the cutesy stuff was the norm.

In all honesty, the Sailor Moon manga was actually pretty brutal and violent at times. The Sailor Moon series in general featured Magical Gril vs Magical Girl (they literally wanted to kill each other sometimes (and a few succeeded)), yandere characters (even Sailor Neptune was a yandere character (stalker + willing to destroy the world if it saves Sailor Uranus' life) in the 90s anime), gay characters, cross-dressing characters, suicide, psychological horror (SuperS manga), nsfw moments between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask (manga only (censored from Sailor Moon Crystal)), etc.
Another fun fact is that Sailor Senshi (what the magical girls from Sailor Moon are called) possess Sailor Crystals and they function the same way Soul Gems from Madoka Magica worked. Apparently, a Sailor Senshi's body can even be restored, as long as, their Sailor Crystals remain. This is also what allows Sailor Senshi to constantly reincarnate and if someone has a powerful enough healing power (*cough*Sailor Moon*cough*), they can even restore their previous bodies. So Sailor Moon beat Madoka Magica to it on that concept too.

@@alan0004 I would say that is more realistically dark than Madoka. It's like what would actually happen if magical girls come to existence in our world.
The only “kawaii” magical girl anime these days that I can think of is Precure.
Yeah; precure is the closest series now to classic magical girls, other then that it's about 90% m rated and 10% parody.
The reason madoka worked so well is that magical girls represent hope, purity, and that child like innocence. They say that a light shine brightest in the dark. Madoka is still that hopeful, innocent girl who wish the best in a not so good world. The other "dark" magical girls are just depressing and there is no hope.
At the end of the day, Madoka is still, at its core, a magical girl show. Here's hoping the new movie will be good.
Like Hollywood they over simplified stuff
Like Superman or super heroes in general.
I thought it was cause people have a loli kink.
Sailor Moon was dark, especially the manga lol. And there was another anime from the 2000s that was almost same thing of Madoka but with a lower budget. Madoka isn't anything original, it just had good animation. And almost all characters sucked tbh

- This video is overly silly, generalized, and cherry picked. MGRP has nothing of value, but just because the genre has changed somewhat doesn’t mean it’s dead. If anything, Madoka breathed some sorely needed new life into the genre. The old shows are still available to watch, they haven’t gone anywhere. A new take on our childhood innocence is great, in moderation that people might say doesn’t exist because all we’ve gotten in the 2010s is grimdark and parodies. That’s not true. Lots of old shows like Princess Tutu were dark takes on the genre before Madoka. Even the new shows aren’t so dark, because they often end by tying back to the genre’s roots of the power of love and friendship, even if there may be a tragic twist. I’d argue that Yuki Yuna is a Hero plays closer to tradition than Madoka, and doesn’t deserve to be called an imitator. There’s shows that have existed into the 2010’s that don’t fall into “grim dark” like Precure, Jewelpet, Little Witch Academia, that one series made by a car company, and plenty of other shows if you know where to look. Kids are still capable of watching and enjoying plenty of these new shows; I speak from experience because I grew up on The Last Unicorn, which is not a kids movie. The fact that the magical girl genre has evolved proves it has staying power. And I haven’t even gotten to western magical girl shows, of which there are plenty.

Sailor moon was a dark magical girl anime I’m pretty sure all of them were in sailor moon (spoilers) at the last episode of season one all of them got impaled and or got pulled underground in a icy hell by very powerful villains. Madoka magica was not the first dark magical girl anime it was just not so hidden like others as well as all the anime’s you see in this video
I love dark magical shows that aren't just torture pr0n, madoka magica and princess tutu dealt with deep issues without just relying on shock value, rather with great stories and fleshed out characters (and there's probably plenty more shows like that out there)
Yeah, a lot of new magical girls shows are only violent, bloody and shock value,. While Madoka Magica (Which I know began this trend) was more psychological, almost didn't show any blood and had a very hopeful plot.
YES thank you, I feel like gore in anime isn’t scary, it’s just gross. When shows are sCaRy just for the shock factor, it just kind of disappoints me.
magical girl site was just... so edgy. the manga had a really neat artstyle, so i can understand that they might just want to draw some gore. and also the bullying made the protagonist understandable. but honestly theres no excuse for the extreme edginess in it. it's just too much, and we all know it.

Consisting the target audience changes, I see why they felt the need.
Magical Girls Now : Gushing Over Magical Girls
It would've been a good anime if they didn't have a 10 years old and the character being 14😰
I think the biggest difference between magical girl anime then and now is that gaining powers back then didn't come with consequences outside of being minorly inconvenienced every so often by the baddie of the day or socially awkward moments of figuring out how to disappear to fight the baddie without raising suspicion; you didn't have to give up your soul and fight for life-prolonging drops like Madoka Magica, magic usage wasn't directly tied to your life force like Magical Girls Site, and you weren't forced into a life-or-death battle royale to compete for resources like Magical Girl Raising Project. There was always some danger, but becoming a magical girl back then didn't completely upend your life or slowly but surely kill you the way the genre is portrayed now.
Despite the while “Dark modern Magical Girl” thing supposedly still going on, we still have Pretty Cure.
ya i’m surprised precure is still ongoing after 10 years (2014) and i literally was watching the anniversary of it they celebrated with berryz koubou which sang the ending song for a precure movie back in 2005 of futariwa pretty cute max heart. I was in my magical girl phase in 2013-2014. You can say Why is this a thing that keeps happening? Dark magical girl is almost becoming a genre in its own right, and I am not comfortable with it.
yeah, it's still going on ever since 2004 with futari wa precure :D

But why isn't glitter force some where on the list
Precure is technically made before Madoka

Omg I saw a moment of Saint Tail no one ever talks about that show but it's like such a comfort to me
Hey, on mangadex there is a new retranslation of the WHOLE Saint Tail manga. It seem to fix a large amount of translation errors too. You should check it out!

Well hello there-
I like both though. The past were really cliche but they gave good messages. They were also fun to watch. Now it's a deeper phycological level . Painful to watch but exciting.
Agree, grew up with the classic magical girls, loved it, but the new ones are good too ❤
They were comedy once, but now they are Thriller with and only so far away from horror sometimes.
Agree
Same honestly
@@lennartstockl5826 Sometimes things change for the better or worse. That's what's so exciting about everything! The fact that some genres and traits can be combined is so fascinating! Or how things can change entirely.
I love both sides of the Mahou Shoujo franchise. Nanoha kicks ass than asks questions
Now add Gushing to this list 💀
De que trata?
I feel like the biggest difference is that 20 years ago magical girl anime was targeted towards young girls. Now most of them are seinen anime aimed towards adult/older men.
annie that’s sounds kinda gross in a way
That and they think making a magical girl show dark like Elfen Lied makes it deep, missing the point on why Madoka Magica even gained popularity.
Even anime towards adult women aren’t done right, Sailor Moon Crystal was originally a josei anime.
Thats mega ew
@@kstarnovagal6672 elfen lied is not a magical girl's show wtf lmao
It's literally categorized as seinen.
Ugh, creeps are everywhere, calling minors their "waifus" and asking for fanservice, just ew. That's a big flaw of the anime community.
Back then, whenever a magical girl transformed, their weapon would appear in their hand. Nowadays, whenever a magical girl transforms, their weapon can appear between their legs.
The idol in Mahou Shoujo Site literally has her weapon between her legs all the time, lol.
don't forget Panty and Stocking!
Oh you again
I seriously see you on every single anime related vids XD
*Ah shit, here we go agian*
To be fair, Magical Girl Ore is a masterpiece. It’s awesome
Don’t let she know about gushing over magical birl
Which is very good, btw
As someone who grew up watching Card Captor Sakura and Sailor Moon, I have to say I love Madoka and need more like it.
The Magical Girl Raising Project books are freaking awesome too. Really if you want a lot of dark Magical Girl fiction, books and manga are some of your best bets. They go places even anime hasn't tread yet. Give Flip Flappers a try as well; it's a perfect blind of light and dark with a ton of creativity.
Man, you guys are the reason why the magical girl genre has become absolute sh*t nowadays. Nobody cares about it being true to its roots and just wants it to be an edgelord bloodfest.
you say this like Madoka is the only dark Mahou Shojo
I grew up watching glitter force but madoka magica & magical girl site will forever be number one in my heart.

sailor moon was bi and cardcaptor sakura had gay characters whats the difference
@@salceds But they weren't the entire cast. A lot of modern magical girls have what I call "incestuous relationships" with it's main cast that at least hint at love among them. It rarely steps out to include someone outside of the main cast like CCS and Sailor Moon did.
@@deadaccount2968 did you just really call it incestuous....the dumbness you just exhibited
anyway, regardless the modern mahou shoujo having the female love interest is a trope i welcome with open arms, however its nothing new compared to the og. we need more lesbians in anime that isnt citrus

Even back in the 90' and before the magical shows were pretty dark. One of them involve the main character being hit by a truck (and is also one of the most hated anime in Japan).
@@narudayo5053 Minky Momo!

Other than that, magical girls were always dark. Young girls fighting crime every week. They're kids, kids aren't ready for these type of things.
Not at all. It's ironic how little the person who made the video knows about Sailor Moon, because it's actually a dark series that the anime tried to lighten up. It's obvious that they were one of the people that got distracted from what actually happened in the series.
If you think being a Magical Girl back then stops suffering, I'm guessing you aren't exactly familiar with Sailor Saturn at all.
Before: Love, rainbows, unicorns, romance, a little bit of drama.
After: Blood, death, bullying, traumatic and psycological pounds, dramaaaaaaa, never take care of a dog or cat, mostly of characters will die in horrendous ways.
Blood for the blood god
@@diamondminer5459 @Diamond Miner Madoka is an edge-fest. Other magical girls series starts joining the bandwagon and rips off Madoka bcs they got no originality. Honestly, the magical girls genre is ruined nowadays. People just don't get what makes it great anymore.
