    I met James Doohan in 1984 at a Star Trek convention. He had a friendly personality, a great sense of humor, and a commanding presence. What a talent !

    He's from Canada and he suggested many accents for the character before Roddenberry decided to make him a Scotsman. This show is a western, but I still totally hear Scotty in his character.

    I've watched Bonanza since I was a little kid. It ran from 1959 to 1973, from when I was not quite 6 years old though beyond high school graduation, a LONG run I literally grew up with. It was back in the day when the whole family would watch the weekly episode together, popcorn at hand. I should think I'd seen every episode. But, I missed this one. I don't think I'd have recognized Majel Barrett if she wasn't pointed out to me.

    Virtually the whole Star Trek cast had been bouncing around Hollywood for years before that show. I think that's one reason Doohan in particular was so enthusiastic in dealing with the shows' fans. He'd given up on ever getting any kind of recognition until ST came along.

      If you watch James Doohan in his Twilight Zone episode, he has no accent at all. He was born in British Columbia and raised in Ontario on the Michigan border. His brogue was part of a vast repertoire of foreign accents that he developed over his career as a fine voice actor. He did a number of off-camera voice roles on Star Trek as well, including Dr. Daystrom's M-5 computer and Sargon ("Return to Tomorrow"). And he developed the first words in the Klingon language that were used (although it was greatly expanded afterward).

    • @andromedastar4900
      @andromedastar4900 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      James Doohan had Irish ancestry, but he was Canadian and didn't have an accent, or actually he did have an accent because everyone does (we just think that people who have the same accent and sound like us don't have an accent). His accent was the Midland/ Standard North American accent.

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get what you are saying about accents. Last year, I was watching a speaker from London at an international convention held in the United States where the vast majority of the attendees were from the U.S. By his third talk, he prefaced his planned remarks by saying how many people came up to him and told how much they liked his accent. He remarked that he has lived in London all his life and you can't get any more English than that. Therefore, he speaks English, he continued, and it is the rest of you who have accents.
      That said, there is a quest within U.S. radio and TV (especially news departments) to have each on air personality develop a regionless sound. (Radio people I knew would mimic the announcer who had achieved this by saying in their best approximation of that voice, "Hi, I'm from nowhere.") So when I said that Doohan didn't have an accent on his Twilight Zone episode, I meant that he was in the "from nowhere" range. He was playing a suburban homeowner in an unidentified part of the U.S.: perfect for that voice.
      Doohan had a wonderful ear for accents. I saw an interview where he stated that Scotty's accent came from Aberdeen, Scotland: a particular individual who he couldn't understand for at least a week. But he toned it down because Gene Roddenberry noted that in full authenticity, the American audience wouldn't be able to understand him, either.

      +andromedastar He has a slight natural Irish accent. His parents were both Irish immigrants.
      You grow up in an environment where everyone outside the home speaks one accent and inside another. You develop an accent that is predominantly outside with an inside influence. I know, it happened to me.

    • @bb22602

      I have two accents too. I was taught to talk in southwest VA, by southwest Virginians. We moved to central VA when I was about 2, so some words come with one accent and some another. Other southwest Virginians can hear my original accent in my vowels.

    Now I'm confused. .I just watched a you tube clip about facts on James doohan and it explained that he was Irish born and with his parents moved to canada but chose to speak in a Scottish accent to play scotty in star trek because most of the past world famous engineers were Scottish. . So why here yes earlier in 62 is he speaking with a Scottish accent ?

    • @danilejai7801

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bonanza had terrible ratings in its first season but it was filmed in color. The main reason NBC brought it back was because their parent company, RCA, wanted to sell more of the relatively new Color TV sets that they manufactured and Bonanza's majestic scenery was a wonderful advertisement for color television. They tinkered some with the characters, generally making the Cartwrights more down to earth, less sanctimonious and less judgmental if someone wanted to cut down a tree. The show took off from there and even survived for a while when Adam (Pernell Roberts) quir the show.
