You sir, are a genius!! I normally use either a splitting axe or maul to create the initial cut, then drive a wedge into the cut with a rock hammer… This saves a LOT of effort getting wedges started. Thanks for the tip.

Good idea except that you shouldn't be using those "wedges" like this. Wedges are made of softer metal so that they won't chip. Striking a former axe head against the back of your hardened maul is a fairly effective way to send shards of metal at high velocity into your femoral arteriy in your leg. Play smart and safe :)
Some guys re-fasten house roofs by smacking one hammer into another to get the claw under the nail head quickly and cleanly without damaging the iron. I found the only time you chip either head is when one hammer hits the corner of the other hammer's head. When I started focussing on hitting them dead squarely, face to face, no more chips. Also, before I learned this and did get chips hitting me in the leg, sometimes it drew a bit of blood, but I never worried about one getting stuck. Much less giving me a life threatening injury 🤣 Definitely will always wear eye protection though because I prefer seeing out of both of mine. Go outside mate.

Good method. I've seen Australian red hardwood that will blunt a brand new chainsaw chain on just one cut. It also stinks of sulphur when burning it. destroy
A small piece of paperbark like this splits easily with a blocksplitter. Use a real piece of eucalyptus hardwood to show how hard it is on stringybark or tallowood. Unless its been dried for years your wedges will require the standard back of blocksplitter to be swung hard over shoulder to split. Paper bark is the softest eucalyptus and the easiest to split with any method.

High Summer here in Ireland so I have the heat turned off because it's so warm. The temperature soared to 12.9C today and we are expecting 14C tomorrow. Mind you, I did think about turning the heat on tonight. It's 3.27am now (can't sleep, guilty conscience) and it's 6C. A couple of weeks ago we did actually have some heat, about 2 weeks of 22-25C, which was very pleasant but it's got cool and we are all getting depressed. Best Wishes, Brendan.

AMAZING, similar to my method, but yours is much better i used to drill 3 to 4 holes using long drill bit, then u use the wedge to split it, but your method by using a saw, is much faster than drilling into the log before splitting it i liked it

Get yourself a proper wedge . That way you won't send a chip into your ladies eye. A proper wedge is less likely to chip. Also a splitting wedge is longer and thicker so you won't need two. Maybe Mum will get you one for your birthday. kind regards, L

As a postie in the uk I once did my round in flip flops. Walked 9 miles and ended up with burnt feet.
