  • In the 22nd edition of "365 Days of Plants", we'll touch on a plant that is commonly sold as "Philodendron micans" but really is just a synonym for Philodendron hederaceum. It's commonly known as velvet leaf philodendron for its velvety leaves.
    This is an easy plant to grow and maintain-and I have several throughout my house, including an original one that has been growing in my green wall for years (and has lost its velvety texture btw).
    In this video I go over some basic care tips including where this plant grows natively, where I'm growing it in my home, propagation, watering, lighting and more.
    You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

    I found one of these growing in the woods by my house a few months ago, so I took a cutting and propogated it into 4 cuttings. It's been doing extremely well recently, and sprouting out a ton of new leaves! The reddish color it gets in the shade is such a nice complement to the velvet~

      They're endemic to Eastern Mexico. It makes sense that it could survive wild in Florida. Someone must have had theirs outdoors and had a piece stolen by an animal. You just got lucky to find it wild. Hope it's going strong. I just got one yesterday.

    One of my absolute favorite species. I've had mine for two years and this plant goes on my most recovered list. When I moved to Florida I set it outside and it actually began to die from being scorched and not properly acclimated outside. It got as low as one stem and two leaves open. So I split it and it took almost a year, but it is on the mend.

Mine had more of a heart shaped leaf, and tended to drip water off the leaf pounts if overwatered. I very stupidly discarded it... and now, I keep an eye out for it again.

    I was worried at first about hederacium because it was putting out smaller leaves, but not long after it found its footing and has basically produced a wall of leaves in a few months time beautifully draping down. I bought 3 smaller plants and placed them all in a medium/ large sized pot. Summer is spot on with the heavier soil because they don’t seem to mind being good and wet for periods of time, and give ME time to neglect them for a week at a time at least.

  • @ChelaWilliams

    Mine has a few white spots on them. Do you think its due to underwatering? I was concerned with the legginess of mine and thought it was due to not getting enough light. I have it hanging from my wall near a window but I think its still a gray area. What are your thoughts?

    the leaves on my hederaceum are releasing tiny oozy (sticky) droplets all over.. I don't see any pests or anything on the plant, and I can't find any information on this anywhere! If anyone has any pointers/advice let me know.

    • @AdrianaLusitano
      @AdrianaLusitano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I don't know about pests that could cause that. If it's water and it's just droplets at the ends of the leaves it's getting rid of the water excess like other houseplants by "sweating". If they're kind of dense and (for what I've read) at the back of the leaves, it's a sort of nectar that they release in order to attract potential pollinators, you can just wipe them gently, I hope this helps. :)
      Edit: I just read you typed "sticky" so most probably the second. I'll post here the Instagram post I read this on if I can find it.

    @janicelindegard6615 ปีที่แล้ว

    For some time now, I've wondered why plant gurus always say to cut the amount of fertilizer in half of what the manufacturer recommends. I would assume that the manufacturer bases the recommended amount on some research of their own (like the MSU fertilizer). So, I'm confused about whether to follow the manufacturer or experienced plant people. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    • @eckehareckbert2731
      @eckehareckbert2731 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much better to cut the amount of fertilizer instead of following the recommended doze. It is much better to prevent root rot from over fertilizer that will kill plants due to i think of some reasons. First not all plants are the same, next the condition of soil or fertilizer in the soil could be changed soil or not repotted soil when purchased and due to these, there could have been fertilizer in it or just been fertilized. In case of plants under our care of year/s, much better to change with rich soil/medium with then again when fertilize should be lesser ones otherwise will burn the roots. Also the salt build up from nutrients from fertilizer in the soil would hurt the plant

    • @janicelindegard6615
