  • In this week's episode of 7 Days of Science, we cover the big, the small, the new, and the old. The existence of dark matter is questioned, a tiny ancient not-frog gets a fun name, dogs brains are scanned, and a new titanosaur is discovered.
Oh, and Doug forgets his suit.

c is a constant. Light does not "get tired". The speed of light is only the constant c in a vacuum. Space isn't a vacuum, especially after 13 billion years, there's ions and EM fields everywhere, it's a plasma basically, with a refractive index.

I think it’s funny it took so long to scientifically figure out that dogs actually understand what you’re telling them. It’s really obvious if you have a working type of dog. There is definitely complex thinking going on in their heads, you can see it in their eyes and reactions. If I ask my dog if he wants a treat or walk or needs to pee or bedtime, and a few dozen other things he knows what I am saying. He knows over a dozen toys by name as well and can go get them on demand. If I ask him if he wants to go outside and I don’t take him immediately. He will bug and pester me until I follow up on it.

Great as always but I would like to point out the numerous primitives who have been taught and use sign language meaning dogs are not the first to show that they understand the meaning of words even if unable to vocalize. In fact other primates can and do go so far as to create words for concepts, actions and items that they don't already have a word for.

Tired light shouldn't even get a mention.
I'm no physicists, but for tired light to be real, universal constants like electron spin, SPL, and every other universal constant would need to have changed at some point, all at once.
Hence why we would be seeing this "red shift" instead of the more widely accepted simpler answer of the dopler shift of light over time as the universe expands.

I realized this exact thing about my current service dog trainee. He understands my words to the point where a mismatch between my word and reality will demonstrably confuse him.
I changed how I trained him, as a result. I’m teaching him the names of things, then syntactically associating those object names with qualifiers and actions.
There’s a couple who are training an African Grey parrot this way, and I’m astonished that it’s working so well with a dog. (Apollo and Friends is the çhannèl if you’re interested in this technique).

A hydrogen based dirigible would not need to fear fire in an oxygen free atmosphere like that of Venus. A fairly permanent base could exist in the upper reaches where heat and pressure are closer to earth normal. The acids could still be a problem... Plastic coatings, if the heat were not too extreme perhaps...
