I started on the David Browns when I was 4 years old. I'd be going with my dad ploughing on a David Brown Cropmaster. I was frozen stiff most of the time but I loved it. Then when I was old enough to work tractors myself I spent tens of thousands of hours driving David Brown 990 (Red & Yellow), 1212 (White & Brown), 1210 and lastly a 1412 (White & Orange) tractors. I also drove various Fords, Massey Ferguson and International tractors and whilst I always enjoy the chance to drive any tractor it's always the David Brown that I want to drive the most. Unfortunately these days I have little to no opportunity to drive any tractors so it was really nice to watch your video and especially with it featuring a David Brown.
It’s great that someone comes on and actually shows what has happened and also the process of repairing certain problems on agriculture equipment with the new part that are needed to have any engine up and going again like it was originally built for, 🇮🇪.
This is great. Showed the timing marks. I have issues with a 1390. seems to have jumped a mark on the injection pump gear. Not sure how because I'm unable to turn it back.Looks like I'll be stripping it down. Thanks again!
I've had multiple David Brown 1200's in my life time. The timing gear he is replacing are cast iron. They usually go out at 4500 hours. It is best to replace them with steal gears. they are pricey but available.
Good diagnosis. Must of been well serviced eng looked clean. I'm surprised you never timed it before u pulled gears off. U need some brass Stilson jaws. U made that look easy. Great job.
With gears all chewed there was no way to time it and no need anyway. The engine times quite easily by lining the gears up with their marks. Thanks for watching!
I pulled the timing cover off I can see that 2 gears are turning and teeth look good. Also I looked into the injection pump, I can see that the shaft is turning. The rebuilt pump was purchased couple years ago from company in UK. Wondering if there was something else preventing it to start. No fuel coming from injection pump

Great Video thanks! I working on my 990 and have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Can the front main engine seal in the timing gear cover be replaced without removing the cover; looks like it might could be but it'd be nice to know before I have a go at that huge nut, all I have is a 1/2" impact - you think a 1/2" impact will be enough? I need to replace the Power Steering Pump & Filter- it's actually sucking oil out of the crankcase and causing the reservoir to over flow - my guess is that the front seal is blown in the pump ?? Your thoughts on this and any suggestions as to how best to flush the system? One final question - sorry - you have any suggestions as to how to free up the left wheel brake input shaft without pulling the final drive apart? I had the brakes replaced a few years back and over the first winter that darned shaft locked up and nothing I've tried has freed it up.
I am not that familiar with David Brown tractors so I'm afraid I can't be much help. 1/2" drive impact is all I use, it should get the crank nut off for you. I think you should be able to change the seal without removing the front cover but you will be able to tell better once you get the front pulley off. It seems odd that the steering pump would suck oil from the crankcase, they usually pump steering fluid into the crankcase when the seal fails but leave to DB to do things backwards. :) LOL I'm not sure how to go about freeing the brake shaft, sorry, but once you do coat it up good with some anti-seize compound, that should keep it from happening again. Hello I have a question where is the timing pin on the 1210. I have looked all around on both of my 1210 David Browns the one I am working on is a 1974 square fender. Please post a video on how the set valves if you can. The only plate I see is on top of the fly wheel below the fuel cell.
that's interesting, the DB's were/are common here in NZ. We ran a red 950, two 990's a 1212 and a 1412 over the years and never had problems with cranks. Thanks for the video anyway, cheers.
It certainly doesn't happen to them all, but it is one of the more common issues. I expect you would be looking a fairly high hour engine for that to happen. It is always good to hear different experiences, thanks for watching!
No it looks like a 1200. It must be right after Case bought David Brown. When Case bought them the first thing they did was change the paint color. The power stearing pump on this tractor is the David Brown style. Case put the oil reservoir down on the pump. It made it difficult to change the filter and it was a pain in the but the get it to seal without leaking.
You will likely have to check salvage yards for the gears and get the casting numbers off of your as there are about 3 different tooth pitches as I recall. Thanks for watching!

very nice job.....I was wondering if you ever pulled a motor on a David brown 1410 and if so do you have to take the transmission apart to do it or will it split by the clutch
Thank you for your interest, the teeth mostly ended up in the bottom of the timing gear cover with some getting through into the oil pan. They shouldn't have done a nny harm because the engine would not have run long once it started shedding teeth and the screen on the oil pump would have prevented them from getting picked up. Parts are getting harder to get all the time for the David Browns, when Case bought DB they continued on with the same basic tractor but with updates along the way until 1985 when they bought IH. At that time they stopped building the DB type tractors and carried on with the IH models so none of the DB models have been built for 30+ years. Another thing to keep in mind is when looking for parts for a DB you need a casting number for EVERYTHING, it seems like their motto was "No two alike"! Thanks for watching!

Hey Dave. looking to buy a decent tractor for a fair price, and in my searching I keep coming across several David Brown Tractors. I've found 3, a 780, 990, and a 1210. All are in really good shape cosmetically, and they are by far the cheapest tractors on my local market. Was wondering if you could give me some insight into David Brown tractors in general, my first thought is if they are cheap, either they are junk, or cant get parts for them or something along those lines. Did you have any trouble finding parts for this 1200? The 1210 I found says "wont run, needs rebuilt", engine I'm assuming. Prices are ranging on these 3 tractors from $1500-$2000, the 2 smaller ones run and operate good they say.
David Brown tractors in general are pretty good solid tractors, but, they are getting harder to find parts for. Engine parts for the most part aren't too bad to find, but a lot of other stuff isn't so easy. They also seemed to believe in "no two alike" so you will need casting numbers from everything you want to buy. The price seems pretty reasonable, but personally I would stay away from the David Browns if you want a tractor for long term. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Dave, just with your timing marks on the gears, How to you know the origin of the marks since there is no real specific keyway slots for some of the gears? I mean you could be 180 out and you'd never know.

Great video I’m am currently restoring my grandads David brown 1390 that was in the family since 1993. Before I started restoring. It had very bad blow by issues/crank case pressure. Didn’t take of pistons yet any tips on what to watch out for/ beware of Thanks David
I just checked my parts catalogue and it looks like that would not be a sleeved engine so you will have to have the block bored and go with oversized pistons. The thing to watch for there is if the cylinder bores are worn too much to bore out. Good luck and enjoy your project! Thanks for watching!
The usual root cause of timing gear failure is the flow control valve sticking in the power steering pump. This was fairly common back in the day with the early power steering pump (without the integral fluid reservoir). The valve is under the hex plug in the side of the pump body. I trained on David brown tractors in the 1970’s and attended many factory service schools at the David Brown factory in Meltham, West Yorkshire. I loved working on these tractors. I still have the original service manuals and hand written notes taken at the service schools. Nice to see other folks enjoying the products. 👍
They were great tractors Jim. I'd have no hesitation in saying that they were the best 2-wheel drive tractors ever made. We had an 880 & a 990 and for sheer pulling power there was no other make of tractor to touch them - the 990 was able to pull loads that a Ford 5000 couldn't, & the Ford had (supposedly) 14hp more than the 990! They're fondly remembered here in Ireland & there are still many DBs working here today, as well as models that have been restored for vintage tractor shows.

Gracias.
I was very fortunate to have been able to learn a lot of the old school knowledge like that from my father and some other local guys that would be around and offer advice from time to time. Thanks for watching!
On a 65 the brakes are on the inside end of the rear axles. Remove the rear axle housings, replace the disks, clean the actuators and replace the axle seals. Good luck. Thanks for watching!
My blood ran cold while watching you wacking on the end of the cam and injector shafts, it can do serious damage to the internal of both. You do not need a big puller you can use a small one and use the holes in the gears as attaching points .
I din't use a torque wrench for this job, for tightening the oil pan and front cover just be aware of the size bolts you are working with and don't over do it. Thanks for watching!
What would some of these farmer do, if you weren't around. Dealership repair cost maybe over 100 bucks an hour. It must feel good when you complete a repair job.
I enjoy fixing things, figuring what is wrong and so on, it does feel good to hear that engine fire back up and know that I did that. When people call me they are already having a bad day, I feel like my job is to help them out by having or getting the parts they need at a fair price, when I fix something, same thing, a quality job at a fair price. David Brown tractors were never known for reliability not to mention durability. Basically the reason they were absorbed by Case and the name went by the way side.
Case bought David Brown to replace their outdated hundred series tractors and continued to build the DBs as Case with limited changes for some time. Thanks for watching!
They were bought out and absorbed by Case because they are a good tractor. I bought mine well used and have never had an issue ( 1200 selectamatic ). Case bought them in roughly 1974 and still ran the David Brown name until around 1984. I really like mine and couldn't find a better value
That's complete bullcrap. There were thousands of new & used David Browns here in Ireland & they are considered the best 2-wheel drive tractors ever made - for reliability, durability & sheer pulling power. Who are you, a MF agent?

Great video I’m am currently restoring my grandads David brown 1390 that was in the family since 1993. Before I started restoring. It had very bad blow by issues/crank case pressure. Didn’t take of pistons yet any tips on what to watch out for/ beware of
Thanks
David
I just checked my parts catalogue and it looks like that would not be a sleeved engine so you will have to have the block bored and go with oversized pistons. The thing to watch for there is if the cylinder bores are worn too much to bore out. Good luck and enjoy your project! Thanks for watching!
Nice video! I have the exakt same problem with my own 1200, and i wonder where you bought the gears from?
I had some of the gears the rest I bought from another salvage yard.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, that is very good information to have! Thanks for watching!
You likely just have some air in the system and need to bleed your injector pump. I have a video on that here th-cam.com/video/5ueJLH6b8QI/w-d-xo.html

Gracias.
I really don't know what the valve lash would be, try .020 inches and go from there.
A lot of people don't know how to use that kind of gear puller or that kind of tie rod end remover neither
I was very fortunate to have been able to learn a lot of the old school knowledge like that from my father and some other local guys that would be around and offer advice from time to time. Thanks for watching!
Can you tell me how to do the brakes on a Massey 65
On a 65 the brakes are on the inside end of the rear axles. Remove the rear axle housings, replace the disks, clean the actuators and replace the axle seals. Good luck.

My blood ran cold while watching you wacking on the end of the cam and injector shafts, it can do serious damage to the internal of both. You do not need a big puller you can use a small one and use the holes in the gears as attaching points .
Thanks for watching!
Good video. I didn't see you using a torque wrench to tighten the bolts. Maybe I missed it. Is there torque setting on your air tool wrench?
I din't use a torque wrench for this job, for tightening the oil pan and front cover just be aware of the size bolts you are working with and don't over do it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Very good video!

@@CanadianRedneck15 fixed clutch pack in case thanks to your video 👍
@@jimmymannion6874 That's great, I'm glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching!
How to adjust the clutch in white 880 anybody..

friend repair a 1210 david brown engine and repair injectors and injection pump and cylinder 2 and 4 do not work also repair the compression chamber which will be the fault thanks
It's really hard to say, have you done a compression test? Could be valves, you really just have to dig in and find the issue. Thanks for watching!

THE problem wher to get parts for DB in south africa i need engine part for 990 please
@just an observer I'd stick your namesake just an observer from what you know of David brown tractors.
