      This. Its one of the best meta moments/stories in this movie. The whole time, he HATES his character and that line because he thinks its "cheesy" and beneath him. The alien (I cant remember his name) who takes it seriously shows him that even a stupid show with a cheesy line/character can have REAL meaning for people, and that meaning is something special and can even do things like have profound impact on peoples lives for the better.
      Its a wonderful showing of how/why people can take things like Star Trek or whatever so seriously and love it so much.

    I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said "You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre." And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans.

    I love this movie so much! It's a clever parody and an affectionate homage to Star Trek, a love letter to the fans who faithfully kept it alive despite being constantly teased as nerds, and a vindication for all the "red shirts" who were killed just to show that lives were at stake just not the lives of the main cast.

  • @brom00
    @brom00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

  • @Caseytify
    @Caseytify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    One of the best Star Trek movies ever made. It's more a love letter to the fans than a straight parody.
    ... I didn't see it in your reaction, but one of my favorite lines was Sigourney's "Ducts; why is it always ducts?" in an obvious reference to Alien.
    They mixed the original series and the Next generation together, as well as some of the other ST series. For example, Seven of Nine from Voyager was famous for being stuck in skin tight cat suits.
    William Shatner was always doing shoulder rolls, and frequently lost his shirt. Alexander Dane reminds me equally of Spock, Worf, and Captain Picard (can't escape his character, known for his catchphrase "Today is a good day to die", a respected Shakespearean actor).
    ... The time span between the original series and the revived Galaxy Quest was 18 years, which was the time from the end of the original Star Trek to the debut of The Next Generation. Coincidence?
    Fun Fact: Guy's scream in the pod room was unscripted. Sigourney's reaction was genuine surprise.
    Also, Guy was a reference to the original ST, where some unknown crewman died, as Guy said, to emphasize the danger. These poor souls became known as redshirts, as nearly every one who died in a landing party wore a red shirt. JJ Abrams included the gag in his 2009 movie. Of the three crew who space jumped to the drilling platform, the crewman in the red suit died.

    • @mikejankowski6321
      @mikejankowski6321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your references got caught in the blender. Worf was the one with the "good day to die" while Picard's was "make it so". But yes, a British guy with a headpiece as an intellectual (Doctor) alien. Great stuff! The best, fastest red shirt death was on Capella IV in Friday's Child...so classic.

    I think one of the reasons this movie was so good was of all the character development:
    Jason learned to be a leader, and that it's not all about him.
    Alexander learned that, even though _he_ thought his role was silly... it actually _meant_ something to the audience.
    Mathesar developed into a real leader.
    Guy got over his fear and became a participating crew/cast member.
    Gwen learned to stop obsessing about how trivial her role was, and _made_ it non-trivial (notice how at the end she's telling Jason what the computer is saying... but we can't hear the computer...)
    Fred got his mojo back...

    For being a scifi comedy with a modest budget, the creature effects in this film were great, as well as the attention to detail. In the first fight, Saris was whole, but after that one, he had a metal eye patch and a cybernetic hand. He also has giant wing/spines that are movable. And Alan Rickman's character had a headpiece that gets progressively beat up as the last half goes on.

    Enrico Colantini ("Mathesar") helped the Director with the Themeians "Walk" and "English"... Enrico was Practicing a vocal warming exercise and Dean Perisot loved it, So Enrico taught the rest of the "Themians" how to Speak and walk.
    RIP to Alan Rickman ("Sir Alexander Dane"). He was known to My Generation as "Hans Gruber" (Die Hard), but this generation will Remember him as "Severece Snape" From the Harry Potter Films!

    That fact that "Fred" was stoned was tapped down before the release, but it was funny anyway. The lack of smacking the audience in the face with the obvious, probably made it funnier. "Just FYI..."

    What made this movie was it had heart without it being forced. It had humour and the heart. A parody at first turned in to a homage.

    16:15 "Rudimentary lathe..." This is an homage to Star Trek:TOS E1S18 Arean where Kirk defeated the Gorn captain by constructing a rudimentary bamboo cannon using Sulfur, Saltpeter, Diamond Dust (Sulfur, Potassium and Carbon being the components of black gun powder) , Diamonds, and iron-hard bamboo. Most of this movie is a set of callbacks and homages. It was not really so much a parody as a loving homage, which is why it worked so well.
    As another comment said, this is the 2nd best Star Trek movie behind ST2: The Wrath of Khan.

    When this movie came out I didn't watch it because it looked silly and I thought "oh they are just riding on the coat tails of Star Trek" It wasn't until years later a friend at work convinced me to give it a shot and I realized what a great parody of so many things. The ego of actors, the whole fandom conventions, and of course Star Trek and other such movies and series. I loved it, still do!
    I think its funny how Sigourney Weaver's outfit becomes progressively more torn up and revealing as the drama intensifies. Much like the Captain losing his shirt on the first planetary landing. This movie is such a classic and I feel foolish for waiting so long to see it and appreciate it's genius.

      There's a deleted scene that explains her outfit. It was a seduce-the-alien turned knock-him-out maneuver. I'm glad they deleted it as I think the scene detracted a bit from the movie.

    Excellent reaction, I always compared Galaxy Quest to being an interplanetary version of The Three Amigos, both movies had actors thrust into real conflicts with lots of touches of comedy with the actors sucking it up and becoming real heroes and saving the day, maybe react to Three Amigos sometime if you get a chance, love the channel as always.

    Fred is so chill because his character is a pothead. BUT, in order to get the rating the had to remove the references to the actual drug. The closest they get is at 20:23 when Guy asks Fred if he’s stoned. But that’s why he’s always so chill and ALWAYS has his paper bag of snacks…. You know… munchies. If I’m not mistaken he missed the initial trip to the ship because he was checking the vending machine for more munchies. But, if you know, you know, Fred has a problem. Lol

    Fun reaction, Addie. I just watched the movie, recently, and enjoyed it. I really like how it parodies Star Trek, based on the aesthetic and concept. I totally agree with you that the Thermians (the alien species in the movie) are very wholesome. Such a beautiful tribute and loving parody at the same time. There are so many "moments" in this movie that it would take quite a while to list them all, but others have done their favorites. It's funnier if you watched Star Trek, but it is also fun and entertaining even if you didn't. It's a movie that, wisely, they didn't try to create a sequel. It could have never measured up, and they probably have difficulty reassembling the cast. Every actor played their character to the absolute pinnacle, and it fit together like a perfect jigsaw puzzle. A genius work of art.

    9:08 Addie goes: "He is very calm". Addie has a good eye.
    What many people doesn't know and I just learn a few years ago is Tony Shalhoub's character is supposed to be high the whole movie. I noticed his weird behavior but I just thought he was awkward. The rest of the movie is not short in awkwardness anyway.
    The parts where he is smoking were cut from the movie to get a PG rating. But if you pay attention you can see tiny bits of smoke around him in some scenes. Also there was cursing that was cut or dub-over to get the PG rating.

    This nails so many things about fandom in general even outside of Star Trek Trekkie/Trekker stuff. But as one myself it of course especially nails that aspect down perfectly, as well as the lives of the people on these shows and the convention circuit. It’s great stuff. Watching it in a theatre with friends and family who are also fellow Star Trek fans surrounded by others who weren’t was absolutely a great experience, especially because we were laughing the hardest and everyone else thought we had lost it completely.

That's why they're laughing, they actually get it now, and they think it's incredible.
    I just wanted to point out because I always loved that moment. They're not mad about being deceived, they understand it was all in good fun and they're 'in on the joke' now.
