  • An attempt at capturing our rather interesting voyage from Ardrossan to Brodick yesterday
    No animals were harmed in the making of this video, although some damage took place to the Calmac Xmas tree and some crockery. Catherine is now completely recovered.

    I kayak in these waters...and have once been shadowed by the Portavadie - Tarbet ferry when a sudden change in the weather arrived. 30 mph winds, 1-2m waves and a 5m swell. I paddled into the wind for nigh on 20 minutes being made to stand off of the fish farm opposite the marina. The RNLI duly arrived and towed me in. The ferry captain as I mentioned stood off to starboard for the entire time. He knows who he is. ❤️🚢

      For not checking the marine weather forecasts and costing the RNLI a fortune and delaying a ferry, I'd have slapped you will a huge bill in the hope that you obtained more than one brain cell.

    I've only been to Arran 3 times and the first time it was like that when the ferry arrived at Ardrossan to take us there. Its not the most ideal harbour and these guys do a great job.

    • @tinnedhaggis932

      It's their hardest rout due to there being no cover from mountains so when the wind picks up it gets realy windy also calidonian Isles the boat can't handle high wind speeds or a rough sea

    Nothing out of the ordinary for a windy day. The Clyde has seen far worse weather than that and back in the 1950's and 1960's, the ferries still ran. I was on the Duchess of Hamilton many years ago and it broke 3 mooring lines, trying to come alongside Dunoon Pier. And that was on one of the summer excursions around Ailsa Craig.

    Some people dont realise when Calmac cancel sailings it is because of passenger comfort not safety of the ship I have travelled on lots of Calmac ferries and I am surprised at the level of criticism sometimes leveled at them

    • @henrygingold6549
      @henrygingold6549 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh really? So it's never due to ancient ferries breaking down and abysmal management?

    In reality coming into the harbour was far worse than leaving. We were heading into the wind and waves, and although there was significant pitching into the waves, with waves coming over the bow. As we headed across and got into the lea of Arran things calmed down, relatively.

    Exemplary seamanship is more or less the only good thing about CalMac. Customer service, fares, cussid crew, lousy timetables and appalling maintenance.
