The truth about Ubuntu! You should know that.

  • Ubuntu is pretty much the most popular Linux distribution for the Linux desktop. Especially since 2006, Ubuntu has been able to take the desktop by storm. A distro that was user-friendly and easy to install. Launched by a solvent millionaire, Ubuntu was the undisputed industry leader for a relatively long time.
But why is it like that? What makes Ubuntu so exciting and popular?
What is the dark side at Canonical behind the Ubuntu success story? A story about questionable decisions, Ubuntu developers' changing relationships with the open source community and the role of Ubuntu today. That's what it's about now.

Btw, the only information they gather today is os/hardware/app data with user info removed and they ask in the installation if you allow it. This info is only used to be able to focus development resourses. To find out what people use and do not use, so they spend time on the right things.
The mistake with the co-op with Amazon is long gone.

@user not with user information attached.
You can inspect what they send. No name, no ip. You don't have to agree to it, in the installation, if you don't want to help.

Canonical and Ubuntu had, and still has, a very important role in bringing the Linux desktop to the masses.

I agree with you. And you know, great responsibility follows from great strength…

Ubuntu is great for other distros to be based on.
Ubuntu itself sucks, and i don't want to spend 3 hours customazing it every time just to remove canonical shit inside of it

Often when it's an app I really need, it's an Ubuntu distro of some sort that saves my ass--Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, etc. Even the wildly popular Linux Mint is really based on Ubuntu LTS, as is Linux Lite, Zorin and Pop!. Canonical has done a lot to make the Linux desktop a reality that can replace Windows. Seriously.

I think that canonical it is the enterprise that facilitate most of linux newcomers and long term users , redhat may have latest software kernel and other things but the best user experience always will be ubuntu based distros, Ubuntu has the better nvidia driver support ever that I never saw in any other distro that not was based in ubuntu and also deserve appreciation cause they were the first who tried to bring a complete linux system for smartphones .

Thanks for the nice video and explanation. Ubuntu was my first Linux distribution but after a year of using it i moved to Linux Mint because in those days Mint was more complete with all needed out of the box stuff. Media codecs, application for unzip, etc... And i prefer Cinnamon DE much more then chaotic GNOME. But still Ubuntu graphic design, the overall look are the most beautiful for me.

This seems like a fair assessment of Ubuntu and Canonical. I like and use Debian based Linux distros, including Ubuntu based distro Linux Mint.

I never could upgrade Ubuntu 18 to Ubuntu 20. Something screwy happened with Python3. I had several installations of version 18 that would not upgrade. I researched the internet. Lots of people had the same issue. No one had a viable solution! My own feeling about Ubuntu is that it is flakey and an annoying pain in the ...! Sometimes, definitely not user-friendly.

on my primary system at the moment, i use Kubuntu mainly due to hardware restrictions (Acer Nitro 5 fan control) where as, my desired daily driver distro is going to be a heavily riced out Debian installation :D

I installed several Ubuntu 28.04 guest VBox VMs. I could never upgrade to 20.04. Something with Python3. Lots of people have had the same issue. Apparently, Conical has no intentions of helping with this well known problem. I am livid with anger at them. No one had an adequate solution. I did the following: save my home directory then delete the VM and install 20.04. I don't if Conical fixed this or not. I'm starting to not care. I will switch to Red Hat. Goodbye Ubuntu and hopefully good luck.

Ubuntu 16.04 was my 1st Linux distro but Linux Mint is what really made me fall in love with Linux and then i spent a few years distro hopping before finally settling on Fedora Mate. Ubuntu is really not as good as it used to be especially since Canonical keep trying to force Snaps down our throats.
