Maybe we should stop buying Monstera Albos

  • The ONE thing you need to know about buying a Monstera Albo cutting is to check the stem. Seeing the stem and looking for the growth point (auxiliary bud) is the main way you can determine what a mid cutting of a monstera will look like in the future.

    Thank you for yet another informative clip. I don’t own one, or at least I don’t think I do 😂. I paid $60 for a small plant from a private seller who said it was an albo and pointed out a minuscule white spot, assuring me it would grow more white. I'd second this for Thai Constellations too. Some are more susceptible to loosing all their white variegation sections faster, some are super prone to root rot while others aren't bothered by your conditions after being in TC most of their lives. It's taken me 6 tries to get one without loosing the roots within a week of it arriving, though I'm hopeful 2 I was worried I lost ( i luckily put the leaves in water as they were pretty despite loosing their nodes) and both have new root growth so here's hoping they'll survive. TC plants are great but some are just super delicate and just changing potting mix or their spot in the house has them throwing death screams

      Totally agree. Also there are some verigated plants that are much more stable. Like neon pothos. Sure, it verigation is basically almost invisible on most of its leaves, or only very slight, but who cares when the leaves push out either a dark green or a neon green. It's a pretty plant regardless that won't go downhill so long as it's looked after properly. I'd rather put my money into something like that, that I can enjoy for a long period of time, then something that's just a ticking time bomb.

    It looks like my next leaf will be mostly white. I know that the mother plant did make half-moon and full moom leaves so I'm going to assume it will continue to grow in the same pattern and hopefully there is enough green in my cutting to sustain itself until the third leaf grows. However, I have seen so many videos about predictions of what the next leaf would look like, and nobody does a follow-up! I'm not entirely sure how exact this grow point theory is. It's a bit too small to predict exactly how much variegation a whole large leaf would have. For example, I see a couple of tiny green streaks in my growth point. They are barely thicker than a hair. I'm nof sure if that counts at all, lol. It would be great if somebody dedicated the time to do a test with recorded predictions and the results.

It has one leaf coming out of a node with a 7 inch aerial root, with the roots at the end of the aerial root. The rot was in the roots itself. I pulled it up to look at the roots because there was a brown spot on the white side of the leaf. My question is... Should I place the entire aerial root in with the roots or leave it above ground?

  • @NicoleButler-jx9hg
    @NicoleButler-jx9hg ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve never had one before so this is a genuine question, what’s the big deal if some of the leaves are all white and some all green? Is there a link to the health of the plant or is it just an undesired aesthetic? Personally I like the unpredictable colors and the variety of variegation but I’m wondering if it is a problem or do others just not enjoy it?

    • @KillThisPlant

      I’m with you, MsAsheeraA, I’m probably not (never say never😂) going to start purchasing monsteras.
      My home has low light, and I’m sure monsteras would be a bit frustrating for the amount of effort needed.

    I dont know if you talked about difference (if its true at all) between monstera deliciosa large and small "form". I would appreciate some detailed explanation and if i buy the "small" form then I would or wouldn't have those bigger fenestrated leaves and huge stems after about 9 years (approximately time that is needed for plant to get fully mature in average house environment).

      Lack of light is probably the main reason for slow growth (unless it has persistent pest issues). Remember to introduce more light slowly.

    Damn. I just bought my first Albo from an Etsy seller and when I received my cutting it’s about 80% white and 20% green. She wanted to charge extra for pictures of the different cuttings and since it was already so much money, I didn’t want to pay anything more. But I guess it’s technically my fault for taking the risk of not paying the extra money to guarantee I was getting a good amount of green 😭

    I'm not buying albos until they come way down in price. I suggest buying a regular monsters, try propagating it, if you have major problems with these, albos are more temperamental and problematic. I got a cheap variegated plant just to try, it was cheap, and it died. Because albos are pricey this is just a suggestion to learn how to do this with a cheaper plant. If you lose it at least the price is much more reasonable

    Hallo, Like your Videos mostly, but this one hast an Info thats not OK..
    The 3-5 leafs are mostly have less White and morgen Green in because to build up a healthy plant. Later if there ist enough Light, the plant can exist and will build up more White variegation. 😉🙋🍃

    • @KillThisPlant
      @KillThisPlant  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching my videos. If you could bring out more green or more white in these plants by giving it more or less sun, everyone would be able to have a perfectly balanced albo. It is genetics, not light exposure that will determine it's colour.

    I did not realize this, is this the same to others like with variegation? I have 1 golden pothos that have 3 different colors after propagating its cuttings; 1 became just green, 1 became the usual golden pothos variegation and 1 with a paler-whitish variegation. The whitish variegation is the slowest to grow compared to the other 2.

      The whiter/cream variegation is how we got Marble Queen Pothos. It's the same plant.

      I'm not completely sure. From what I've seen pink princess and white knight tend to react a little differently, with their variegation seeming to disappear and return.
      This is by no means universal advice for all variegated plants.
