I've been reading about rain gardens lately and what plants can tolerate so much water. I have some places in my yard that pool water too.

So far, this dry well has worked well. I am hopeful 🙏😁

Lol hump-a-little! Love your sense of humor. I'm sorry you lost your plants - that's disappointing! I too do heavy garden jobs (regrading my entire back yard to counteract sloping toward back door which is at ground level.) I do this all by myself with just a shovel and a wheelbarrow, but now the water from heavy rain (and neighbours' pools) runs away from the house and is absorbed into the amended ground and perimeter raised garden beds. My soil is (or was) clay also - concrete when dry and plasticene when wet. I dug in peatmoss down for about 6 or 8 inches over the whole yard (two 5 month seasons of 3-5 hr days) so that it would be super absorbent. This has worked perfectly to solve my water problems. But I sure am glad that job is behind me! This year, I am laying cardboard and mulch down so I don't have a lawn to mow, anymore. Proud to be a lazy gardener- but it takes a lot of work to get there!

Doesn’t sound like you are a lazy gardener.. quite the contrary! You are just a SMART gardener! There is only so much time in the day.. and none of us are getting younger.. RIGHT?? So … we do what we can today to make work easier tomorrow… in hopes that we can actually ENJOY our gardens one day. I SO appreciate your comment! I watch so many TH-cam channels where they seem to have all the money and time they could want and always seem to have a GORGEOUS garden that I feel discouraged sometimes because I have to work so hard to have anything. Your comment is both encouraging and informative.. and is MUCH appreciated ❤️🥰
