    A beautiful exchange. I am 70 years old/young, trained for most of my life in a variety of different styles; mainly Karate, Wu-Shu, Arnis, Boxing and a bit of Muay Thai. My first martial art was Judo, starting at 7 years of age in Cuba under O' Sensei Andres Kolychkine. Been fortunate to have had many good teachers including; Vietnamese Master Ngo Dong, Ed Sroka, Sifu John Chuck, fellow practitioners and students. I still train daily in Thailand, my home for the past 18 years. I ran a school in Berkeley California with open doors for 12 years, and left it in the hands of my students. My thirst for learning and daily practice will continue to my last day. Learned much from both of you young men today. Interesting note_ In my younger sparring years, I threw my side kick, much like Wonder Boy Thompson, It was hard for me to bring my the knee up high, perhaps structural limitations of my body, or a weakness to remain balanced and thrust out, I was corrected by my Sensei daily, but somehow it worked well in sparring. Keep an open mind and open heart. I just subscribed to your channel. Sorry for the long narrative, its an old man thing. Domo arigato gozaimasu

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Lyoto Machida's style is a lot like Wonderboy's, the big difference is in takedown defense and that Lyoto tended to use his hands more and stay at a closer range. Lyoto had killer takedown defense in his prime, like you had to be a wrestling god to get him on the floor. If Wonderboy had that he would empty his division because nobody can stand-up with him currently.

      So do I. I actually am studying Muay Thai now after10 years of Uechi Ryu Karate and personally I feel between it and Muay Thai the two are equally effective as fighting systems. We used leg kicks and tried to injure limbs when blocking which is why we used conditioning tools and did conditioning drills. The tactics that I was taught then are exactly what I am being taught now but for some reason,my classmates have misconceptions about Karate. Also, I actually used a ridge hand on a person in a street fight.... and it worked. I really hope that Wonderboy can get Karate the recognition which it deserves.

    That's really cool that you got to meet his father. What makes me happy to see is that you're spending your time and your lady's time to research the true ancient roots of these combative arts! I'd love to see if you have ever met Maul Mornie who is the master of his family's Silat Suffian Bele Diri which much like Kali is certainly equally among the dirtiest martial arts in the entire world! I'll be watching! Thanks so much for your endeavors! It never ends brother! I began my lazy training at 15yrs of age and 54yrs later I'm 34 and a half years old! Oh almost forgot times two!

    The whole disguise with constant movement is exactly what you do in fencing too. It's very easy to see an attack if someone tries to stab with from stationary. It's much harder for the opponent to figure out a setup from an attack if you're darting back and forth slightly.

    I feel like the movements he was talking about have almost a TKD feel to them without the stance switching. The kick variables also give me the same thoughts. Especially the leg lift and backward movement into side movement.

    • @AveSicarius

      American Karate basically is Taekwondo for all intensive purposes (as in it was brought over by Koreans who knew TKD and labelled it Karate because people didn't really know TKD at the time). That and sports Karate and sports TKD are pretty similar in general.

    This is so cool! I love traditional martial arts and it is so great to be able to validate that those concepts are still working in modern martial arts. As a Wing Chun practitioner, and a Jiu Jitsu practitioner, I see a LOT of commonalities. Frames in jiu jitsu are basically Wing Chun Bong Sau. The center line concept is essentially the same between Wing Chun and Jiu Jitsu. The horse stance in Wing Chun translates very well to the body posture in jiu jitsu on the ground! Also for the record, my first foray into martial arts was 4 years of Uechi Ryu!
