- Briony: I was thirteen.
Robbie Turner: How old do you have to be before you know the difference between right and wrong? Do you have to be eighteen? Do you have to be eighteen before you can bring yourself to own up to a lie? There are soldiers of eighteen old enough to be left to die on the side of the road! Did you know that?
Briony: Yes.
Robbie Turner: Five years ago you didn't care about telling the truth. You and all your family, you just assumed that for all my education, I was still little better than a servant, still not to be trusted. Thanks to you, they were able to close ranks and throw me to the fucking wolves!
How old do you have to be to know the difference between right and wrong? ... powerful
I literally answered when he said that. 26. That’s when your brain stops forming and the last thing to form is reason and logic

One of the great scenes in "Atonenent".
Briony is the embodiment of regret.
Absolutely painfull.
Romola Garai is brilliant here, she truly deserved an Academy Award nomination.
Am I the only one who thinks the parents should share the blame? They raised Briony so leniently, which stroked this fanciful, bold attitude. She was 13! Plenty of time to teach her about consequences and the gravity of things
Also, she was very overprotected. Although it was the 1930s, they acted like Victorian prudes and didn't teach her anything about sex, hence why she interpreted Robbie and Cecilia's relationship so terribly yet not deliberately.
@@Artfanbookfan25the 30's was still very conservative. Sex was a Big taboo.
@@annaparker6548 Another factor is that Briony grew up in the country. The cities have always been more liberal when it comes to social and sexual issues.
I JUST WANT TO BE THAT GUY THAT PAINFULLY REMINDS EVERYONE THAT HE DID NOT EVEN GET A OSCAR NOM FOR THIS!!!! WTH!!!???
Briony's action were done out of jealousy & spitefulness. I think she convinced herself that her actions were in the service of protecting Cecilia. True, Briony had no understanding of the "intimate encounters" she observed between Robbie & Cecilia but they were still encounters that she envied. If Briony truly believed that Robbie was Lola's attacker why would she feel the need to pressure Lola into saying Robbie's name? Briony's character didn't strike me as the "nosey sibling" type, so why did she feel the need to read the note Robbie typed for Cecilia? Yes, she was disgusted at first but she seem intrigued by it too. I think the reason Briony felt immediate guilt after the incident was because she knew what her real intentions were, which had nothing to do with protecting Cecilia
I agree, I feel like Briony's actions were partly motivated by her childish crush on Robbie. It's true that as a child she misunderstood the sexually charged encounters between Robbie and Cecilia but there was definitely an element of jealousy there as well. That coupled with her petty childish "revenge" is what caused everything. She probably thought she was just going to inconvenience him a little and didn't grasp the full gravity of a an assault accusation
The last scene of them kissing by the window, along with the music, is the saddest fucking thing. Because it embodies what would've happened if Briony owned up to her lie and it could never happened.
We see them through the window as if it's a framed picture and the picture fades away, because that's a glimpse into the image Briony created in her head, which never happened.
Briony Tallis was marked for the rest of her life.
I have never hated a character more in my life. Even Umbridge seems better than Briony.
SO TRUE BESTIE
He repetido esta escena muchas veces porque necesito admirar la increíble actuación de James. Es impresionante!!
he whimpers so often in this movie and it makes me feel like a feral animal every time he does
So Elizabeth Bennett and Emma Woodhouse reincarnated and became sisters ;)
the fact that I know this was a lie was a bit infuriating of what wld've been if it's real she made it clear that she was a coward
Keira's accent is so distracting, it sounds like she's doing a comedy sketch. Takes me out of the movie.
Isn't that how the upper class spoke like back in those days?
it was inspired by the actresses of the time.
The accent was done to have the accent during the time setting of the movie. And, her character came from a rich family.
@@dangerislander I just wish they'd toned it down a bit. Accents like in the "Pride and Prejudice" 1995 version would have been fine.
I actually really like her accent.
