    Just finished building this vacuum form machine and finally getting to test it.
    The material used was TEST material and only for mockup purpose.
    Once all the bugs are worked out the final seats will be smooth ABS plastic.
    This was built so we can make our own cafe racer seats, our own side covers, fenders, headlight buckets or whatever else we desire...
    There are some build pics with more details in our blog at www.chappellcus...

    I can't believe I haven't seen this video until now what an awesome process and you can see you put your heart and soul into what you do. Thanx for sharing Chris, I will chat with you very soon :)

    You are a Stud! You're attention to detail is impeccable. You are a true inspiration.
    If you don't mind, I'd like to share a little about myself with you.
    I'm in the process of working towards a similar end. I hope to eventually either purchase or build my own 3d scanner, 3d printer, vacuum forming machine, foundry furnace, tubing bender, manual mill, manual lathe, tig-welder, cnc plasma table and of course all the smaller misc tools/machines to support taking an idea from conception to fruition.
    I started this journey by first getting my welding degree. Soon after graduation, I switched to Mechanical Engineering, started a SAE Baja team, designed an built most of two "baja" cars, and helped to develop the machine shop at my school (for a video of the build process, search boise state baja). I now work as a design engineer where I get to make multi-part fixture solutions to support a lights out method of manufacturing.
    I've learned that, without help from like minded individuals, the process of making dreams like mine a reality is fruitless. With that in mind, I started to look to people who have a similar drive to invent/create. I've since started a team of peeps who have ideas they'd like see come to light.
    Hopefully, someday I have a shop like yours, ability like yours, and the freedom to go about my day building incredible machines how I like.
    Sorry for the novel...
    Thanks for your time.
    P.S. If you ever need a hand, shoot me an email... For more info about me, just search my name on LinkedIn.

    I noticed you had some issues getting that black ABS to get all the way into the corner at the back of the seat. The plastic will cover all over the edge of the mold before you have the chance to get rid of all the air underneath, so you could drill some small holes there into the mold to get those last bits of air out and get a tighter fit.

    Hey Mike, i'm not really a "plans" kinda guy... also the machine has changed quite a bit since this video, some of which can be seen in our more recent vids. I'm now pulling 3/16 thick ABS so i had to change out my vacuum system to vacuum pumps and air tanks, made a new platen and modified the heating system to not blister the heavy material. Basically if you want to make 1 seat or tail, then just make 1 - much cheeper and less of a headache honestly.

    I noticed you overheated the plastic. I had this issue too when I started out with my homemade vacuum former. I solved the problem installing an electronic temperature controller on each of my zones. They are super cheap on Ebay, $8 bucks delivered. The digital display gets preset and it cycles my contactors so the elements don't get blazing hot and singe the plastic. Best $16 bucks ever spent

      @tuffsideseats  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah this was a while ago when i first built it. I have built heat shields since, and cycle the power as needed. No longer gets overheated. Thanks

    @Chris Chappell Thanks for sharing. I'm doing a vacuum forming of something completely unrelated... built a large machine like yours but I'm running into a problem removing the mold. I see that you made your mold very smooth and you also left the first layer of thin plastic on it which should help in removing the mold. My question is what thickness of Petg did you use for the plastic left on the mold? Thanks and awesome work!

  • @tuffsideseats

    Also there are a few left for sale on Ebay, search universal cafe racer seats. The rest will be built to order on the website.

    • @tuffsideseats
      @tuffsideseats  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this vid was almost 2 years ago... it now uses a vacuum pump and a large tanks for vacuum storage. A regular vacuum does not provide enough vacuum for the thickness of material we are using. No time for more videos on this old machine any time soon. But thanks!

    @Francisco Fred Viana keep in mind this was a while ago and the machine and moulds have changed since. Now our moulds are screwed to the table so removal is not a problem. The PETG will not work for very long, we are doing 3/16" thick ABS so the heat of the ABS over the PETG will eventually distort it. Don't know the thickness of what i used, but it was thin.

    I've had my Tuffside seat for a little over a year now on my daily driver. At first it seemed a little delicate, I thought for sure the diamond stiching would break but it's held up nicely. The one thing I have noticed is the foam is completely flattened where my ass usually sits. (no I'm not a fat ass!) I would reccomend using a more firm grade of foam. Or don;t use it as much as I do! Looks fantastic though!

    Hey, Awesome by the way. But I really need to know how you put together the heating system? was it a disassembled heater? or did you buy the metal and shape it, and connect it to electricity or a heat source?

    • @tuffsideseats
      @tuffsideseats  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made it. It is a sheet metal outer shell, with ceramic board to insulate. Then used 2 new electric 240v oven elements.
