What you're showing in this video is not removing the polarising film (which is on the front of the screen) but how to remove the back reflector (silver panel) of the DMG gameboy. This will do nothing to repair polarising burns and does not need to be done.
Well I did, and it helped.... when I apply the new polarizer, there are no burns now. But I am missing the silver panel also 😂 So I think I need that, too... I think the polarizer is on the back of the Classic GB, but on the front of the Pocket. Can someone confirm? Update: Piece of paper will do, the swarm says 😅 will go for the backlight mod
I removed my films fine. I tested out the Gameboy after and noticed a huge chunk of lines taking up the screen. I tried repairing that (soldering iron on the bottom ribbon cable) but nothing happened. I left my Gameboy, and now when I turn it on, I see the screen for a few seconds, then it fades away.
Mate I got right near the end like you and I must of put too much pressure in one corner closest to the frame and “click” there goes the LCD.. noticed the liquid inside the screen rainbow out from the corner :( now looking for another original gameboy on eBay....
i did this today and it went quite fine. very nerve wrecking though. had horizontal lines the last time. so this video was hard to watch with the crackling noises. the suspense was killing me lol. oh i had this residue on the first one too, almost as bad as in he video. thx for the acetone tip, would have been nice to see the process.
my gameboy, color and advance has similar problem, in which the screen would become contracted and produces rough creases. Any idea what is wrong and how to fix it
Dang it, I screwed up my screen. It originally had a single horizontal line, but when I did the backlight mod, I put too much pressure on the ribbon cable on the back/side. I wish that i watched this video BEFORE doing it, I was a teeny bit impatient...
when i did this today, i ripped the bottom ribbon cable by mistake. I have another gameboy on the way to swap out the front half of the circuit board. Do you have any tips for not ripping that ribbon cable? It seems like it wants to rip any which way you hold the screen
I'm not sure heat would help here. I'll admit I've never tried but I'd be careful with heat on the screens, they're old and fragile. To be honest it isn't necessary though, just being patient is sufficient.
Hey, I have a pokemon pikachu 2 gs (pocket size game), the polarization film has a spot so...you know if the game boy color polarization film could replace it? (i mean cut the size of it and put it)
I have no idea, personally I don't think it would be that easy. The polarization film usually has a lot of sticky adhesive on it once it gets removed. I'd imagine the gs being so small probably is very fragile inside but I've never opened one.
Okay so i just installed the backlight and bivert mod. It seems that I accidently just removed the reflective layer but not the actuaL polarizing one. I can grab a corner and peel off parts of the layer, but the pixels are still visable and from my understanding they shouldn't be visible when there's absolutely no polarizing filter attached. So the question is: Where is the fkin polarizing layer? It's clearly the last layer that is still sticking to the glass, I definitely could not see a layer under it. The problem that I'm actually having is that I installed the bivert mod and no matter how I rotate and place the polarizing filter, the pixels are still diverted.
I installed a backlight and bivert today and had the same problem. I peeled the plastic backing but the reflective layer just remained so I had to scrape it all off with a spudger. I tried for a long time to get the polarising layer off, but I just couldn't see it - then I realised the polariser was on the front of the screen, not the back like everyone elses. I peeled that off, cleaned it and I had a clear screen. However, when I put the polariser behind the screen, I had no image - I have to put it in front of the screen to see anything. It looks perfect though - I just have no idea what happened. I'm thinking my GB has been repaired at some point in the past or something.
DarkConstruct The vast majority of the time it's done for a backlight mod. The back polarizer has a reflective film (you can see that the LCD becomes transparent when it's removed), and that has to be removed. Once it's removed, you install the backlight itself, and a simple polarizing film without a reflective surface so the backlight can shine through.

do you need to backlight the gameboy after removing the old polarizer and putting the new polarizer?
The backlights usually come sold with a new polarization film. I haven't produced a backlighting video yet but I will soon.
you can insert a white paper instead of the backlight. far from perfect though. you need a polarizer.

Yeah those horizontal lines are basically unfixable unless they happen to fix themselves when you adjust the placement of the screen which is rare.
Can I get new display for DMG ?!
Damn seeing you struggle with this film makes me not even wanna do this mod. I know there's IPS mods now but they're pricey and not too much better.
