    i think we as skateboarders take ourselves way too seriously wear what you want if that follows a trend then fuck it wear it cause you want to, skate what you want don't spend time thinking about if you are following a trend or not. by doing this you turn skateboarding, the most fun shit in the world into a minefield of sorts where everyone is trying to avoid stepping on a landmine of ridicule.

    a lot of people are angry about how he is venting about skate fashion, but you have to understand from a skater's perspective from someone who skated in the way early 90s. it was "our" thing, and everyone treated us like an outsider, so we rejected them as well. now skateboarders are really just a bunch of jocks who skate for companies like nikes, and want to be on stupid contests on espn.

      As someone that skated in the early 90's and still does I see what the kids are wearing now and can't help but cringe. Sure 90's skate fashion was our own thing but it wasn't/isn't a nice looking thing.

    Some interesting takes here. I always thought of the different fashions as being a sign of skateboarding transcending pop culture, of being a universal language. Skateboarding is timeless and know's no boundaries. But I really appreciate this insight, its easy to disregard how original and weird of a sight skateboarders must've been in the 70's/80's

    I understand what he's saying about posers and shit, but come on! I always felt like skateboarding itself was greatly influenced by punk and rap and I personally like both styles. Skaters should be able to dress how they want and listen to what they want. We all have different tastes but that's what makes skateboarding original.

    •  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      there is a difference between having taste for something and totally buying mainstream shit. mainstream shit doesnt comes from you it comes from mainstream fuckin culture doing your own shit is alot more interesting than dressing like 10981237478 other skaters just to be ''cool''

    I used to get shit for wearing Vans at secondary school here in London during 2006, they used to call my TNTs ''Air Force Nones'' which is actually hilarious and my Eras were ''Gay'' apparently, later that year the converse renaissance became a fully blown public trend in the UK and shortly after the same people started wearing Eras and Chukka Lows ect, it was like nothing ever happened and that's Life.

    even though skaters are barrowing styles from past generations they always put their own twist on it and more importantly they still do things 1st when they come around a 2nd time Im from the area of the baggy pants and big shirts and though iv toned it down some, my shirts fit normal , I still dress that way but the bulk of skater rebelled against what ppl thought they should look like and started the skinny jeans area which im not feeling , ,first just hipster skaters but once hip hop culture bite that shit and started trying to look like skaters you started seeing all the hip hop skaters wearing them too. but lets give credit where its dew while skating is increasingly more racially diverse it was once mostly lower middle class white kids and are the only sub culture that has had a significant influence on pop culture not stolen from black or latin cultures pretty much every other fashion trend , music genre ,or slang can be traced back to ethnic origins but stolen and popularized ,or bastardized by whitey .and don't tell me surfing or snow boarding can say the same ,their to regional and have nowhere near the global appeal or influence ,and im not saying skating shouldn't be diverse if anyone is thinking that or that saying this on some white power trip or whatever , not at all my family is biracial, I love diversity its one of the things that makes skating great and its not about that anyway im jus saying skaters of all races, sexes, from all over the world should be proud to be leaders not followers of trends , so when somebody disses how you look or talk just laugh knowing they'll be doing the same thing in the next year or two, that's what I do

      The style comes from within the person, not the external circumstances. If you let the outside influnence you to the point of molding you completely, you've already missed the point on style. It's just like music. Many say hip hop and rap died, but in the under ground scene there is a plethora of artists coming hp with amazing work. So it depends where you look, and how you look at it.

    I remember people didn't know I skated in high school because I used to always draw comics and anime. I wore dragon ball shirts and whatever haha. The first time people saw me wear a "vans" shirt and shoes. People assumed I was a poser. It didn't bother me at all and found it hilarious when people saw me with a skateboard and word of mouth what tricks I could do. The biggest shit talkers were usually the ones that could barely do any tricks at all

    I must disagree about skateboarders being the first to wear baggy tech styled clothing and chain wallets. Snowboarders were doing it first. I was wearing big Simple brand snowboarding pants and a chain wallet in 1990 on the ski slopes, and I am pretty sure they were available a year or two before that. So unless we are talking about skateboarders wearing that type of gear earlier than 1988, than snowboarders did it first.

    He's fucking true though. It's almost like we can't find our own identity sometimes because we just bite off trends or some other skater's style. It's like yeah so this skater likes this but I bet the guy that mimics him probably doesn't but just dresses for the vibe

  • @atomsk1972

    I love Marc, but I just don't feel that fashion is that important. It's what you do, not what you wear.
    Plus, skating to rebel means once the rebellion is over, you're done with skating too. I love skating for what it is, not it's social context.

    @REGGIESILK-- Biebel is being authentic, if not original. That is the point that MJ is trying to make. "Who are you?". Skateboarders are lacking authenticity and it is watering down the culture.

    I like how disgusted he is.. fucking dope cause you know he's really meaning what he's saying. You gotta respect that. And I agree what the fuck happened to Skate style, from being the rulers of all 90's fashion by just being ourselves to looking like the fucking Ramones with tight jeans and the the whole wack neon bright shit movement to fuck I don't even know what fools are doing now... bring back the OG Vato Rat style. That was the truth. That was from the bone ...

    Marc skates beautifully, but really, five minutes complaining about skate fashion?

    • @espaciofantazma901
      @espaciofantazma901 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand MJ's frustration. I started skating in the early 2000's and today, the fashion that all of the skaters have makes me cringe so fucking much. Like, can a person be any less of an individual? The silly little bobby hat.. The pants that don't even reach your ankles.. Oh, what do you know? Every skater at the park is dressed that way.. What's the bet you're going to carve around and do a 180 no comply? Bingo. I see his frustration. Everyone's a duplicate today. And it's disappointing because there is no innovation. No hope for the future.

    • @joemcbee
      @joemcbee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Espacio Fantazma there’s always going to be innovation. It’s just not going to be seen immediately. But the difference between now and back in the early 2000’s and before, TH-cam wasn’t a thing. It’s easier than ever to get exposure.
