Kurashiki is located in the south-central part of Okayama Prefecture right between Osaka and Hiroshima. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is just a 15-minute walk from Kurashiki Station.
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is beautifully preserved.
During the Edo Period, Kurashiki's old town and port were directly managed by the Tokugawa shogunate as a collection point for annual rice taxes. The distinctive white-walled, black-tiled warehouses were built by merchants to store goods. The city’s name actually comes from these storehouses (kura). Canals were built to help boats and barges navigate between the storehouses and the port. The weeping willow trees and stone bridges along the canal create such a picturesque scene. Many of the original storehouses are still here and have been converted into cafes, boutiques, souvenir shops, and museums. There are also many Western-style buildings from the Meiji Period, giving the area a unique mix of Western and Japanese architecture.
You can even take a traditional boat ride along the canal.
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a delightful destination that takes you back in time with its well-preserved Edo-period architecture, charming canals, and rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re exploring the museums, enjoying a boat ride, or just wandering the quaint streets, this historical quarter offers a unique and scenic experience.
