Graphics aren't everything, and F1 games have reached such high graphics that there's nothing to improve, all they can do is make small changes and adjustments because the tracks irl didn't change either except for some ads (which are reflected ingame)

The lack of tyre debris on the track is the biggest let down for me. And rain quality changed to puddles, like how forza 5 had aqua planing on puddles, but there is no effect here
The tyre debris is definitely there. You’ll even pick it up on your tyres when you run off the racing line. He might not have seen it because he probably did shirt length races

F1 2020 better textures, better reflections, puddles looking better in rain, better tyre debris on the track, better grass & better servers. I'm skipping F1 2021 and will wait for F1 2022.
I mostly got F1 2021 because of the Braking Point story. Well, I really got it because I started loving F1 racing again. It started with F1 2020. One thing I liked about the last game that isn't in this game is the inclusion of classic F1 cars. I know some people couldn't care less about it but I liked those cars. Probably even more than these newer F1 cars. There's also tracks that aren't in the game which will be added in sometime by an update patch. Another thing I do like about F1 2021 is that the official intro video is in the game. That was cool.
I've put a bunch of hours into this and the gains are all mechanical. the surface and tyre physics models are a large improvement on 2020. Visuals-wise the lighting and the fact that it's apparently raytraced? disappointing at best

For the sound comparison, its important to also highlight the sound of front tyre locking .. Going from F1 2019 to F1 2020 was a lot more immersive, that even the tyre lock had a really different sound.

And not only the game doesn't utilize RT properly, the best area to show it off, the reflective water surface on the roads, has been removed. And mind that F12021 was developed under EA which means the studio has way more budget than they did previously. It just looks significantly worse than F12020. This annual sports games are really the lowest-effort types of games. Edit: Also, they have disabled the RT on PS5 because of performance issues. How is this low-level of RT causing issues on a PS5?! It's like a tenth of the RT used in Spider-Man Miles Morales.

Devs and publishers usually don't care much about them. They could just keep the reflections and add RT to them. The reason behind environment reflections being less detailled is that raytracing is very taxing and trade-offs had to be made, sacrificing distant reflections for higher visual fidelity in the near distance.
It would be cool if they kept everything (as in Menus etc) the same and had released this as "F1 2021 Season upgrade" and meanwhile worked on something actually new, like F1 dunno.. 1995? Something truly different and worth the full price.

This was such a great video since F1 2020 went on sale on Xbox with a special edition too for like $18. I don’t really buy racing games but I’ve gotten more into F1 so it’s a great starting point.
The sound does change, as there are settings for it, making it far more realistic, and road rain textures are in fact quite good as it is more realistic for the driver POV, which is the main POV, where more settings are possible
This is why I think ray tracing is overrated. It can do wonders for making things realistic for sure but I don't see any issues with a game that's looks better because the art team carefully baked every aspect to make the best "look". Looking great and looking real don't always align
IMO, the most important thing they need to get right every year are getting physics and tire model correct as can be for $60 and giving us options to have it be more/less sim like. Then get yearly changes to the car design and liveries correct and include the exact circuits from the real F1 season. As long as graphics are adequate im not gonna notice much when racing and trying to get 20 cars moving at 4K/60 fps is gonna take some corner cutting. Sadly, modern F1 cars sound like total shit anyway so they got that right both years!
Keep dreaming, these F1 games are told by Codemasters Formula 1 partnership to be Simcadish as much as possible. They want to draw the younger audience and also make more money. The Sim market is too niche and small for these companies to break bank.

GTA and RDR genres are too unrelated, so I doubt the comparison would make sense. But the other two are very good ideas, especially those AC titles. I really felt a graphical downgrade going from Unity to Syndicate.
The puddled ground in the wet replaced the shiny, reflective surface of f1 2020 because its more realistic with the puddled so I think the puddles make it way better
I use the cockpit cam and I fell like now the shadows from the other cars when you look through the mirrors are not as good as in f1 2020, sometimes looks like there is no shadow, don't know if anyone noticed it too, I play on pc at max setting
yeah this has been fixed today finally. the raytracing we see in this video is such a poor implementation of the tech but if you crank it up to ultra its finally looking good
Great video showing its big technical flaws. This series has always been overvalued. Compared with any other top notch racing game F1 looks like is at least 5yrs behind.
I was hoping that with Ray tracing they could create a more realistic version this year but I was totally disappointed with what came out this year. So I got a refund and I'm sticking with F1 2020 until the next game is released. There's just not enough of a improvement to justify the price this time around which is really sad because I'm a huge fan of the series. I can't hardly wait to see what Grand Tourismo 7 is going to look and play like next year, I have even higher hopes for that game then the next F1 2022. I installed F1 2020 and F1 2021 on my PS4 Pro and F1 2020 and F1 2021 (both PS4 and PS5 versions) on my PS5. I'm still noticing that both F1 2020 and F1 2021 play better on the PS4 Pro. The white lines, barriers, stands etc. all display jagged edges and crooked lines on every circuit on the PS5 console but there are very few jagged edges on the PS4 Pro console. I have constantly attempted to tweak the settings on my 4K UHD Sony Bravia and the PS5 to solve the problem but it's still the same. I'm actually going to start playing F1 2021 on the PS4 Pro, which sounds nuts considering I have a PS5. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing all of the jagged edges on both versions of F1 2021 on the PS5?
Code masters did send out a message saying they had turned off Ray tracing to improve stability on consoles and are working to fix it up, so depending on when this was recorded could be an issue
21 definitely has better sound design, you can hear more small ticks and stutters based off of how the car is moving. But yeh visuals I did notice were downgraded a bit, which confused me I didn’t quite understand why they made some of those changes, although the color palette in 21 is a bit better I’d say. I absolutely hate the changes made to the career and team modes, very dumbed down and more difficult and those two things do not go hand in hand. Should’ve given more player choice if they were gonna up the difficulty. It’s not that much of a problem but I’d say the campaign is def the most redeeming factor of the game.
I think this game might be lacking a few details because of the switch to PS5/Xbox Series X. We had the same problem when F1 2014 came out. Ray-tracing even got removed for a while on PS5 because of a few issues. Hopefully, they'll do better in F1 2022
Cars feel way more responsive, curbs are more dangerous and feels easier to spin, while bumps and track elevation are more noticeable. Sense of speed feels more realistic. Overall the physics feel much better in my opinion. And let's not forget the turbo whistle. The red bull sounds fantastic.

we had a campaign but at what cost? i mean, if u maintain the same texture give you less work to do, instead of replace them, so why they replace with something worse? there were a lot of things that could be included to enhance the online experience in the leagues. They have added a campaign that no one needed, they have worsened the textures and the general quality of the environment and they have not improved the quality of life where it was needed. It is really disappointing, how lazy developers are these days, there almost no progress anymore, there are games that are five or six years old that look better than new games, like for example Quantum Break. Even if they technically improve games, they make them uglier in many cases.

F12018 is still the best overall in my opinion. It was more simulator oriented, whereas the newer ones are more arcade style. It seemed more grown up.

The car shaders kinda let the raytracing tech down. It looks very matte so there aren't any noticeable improvements to the reflections

Gran turismo 7 looks exactly like GTSport just maybe with Ray tracing this time no changes forward and making it Cross-Gen proved so.
I installed F1 2020 and F1 2021 on my PS4 Pro and F1 2020 and F1 2021 (both PS4 and PS5 versions) on my PS5. I'm still noticing that both F1 2020 and F1 2021 play better on the PS4 Pro. The white lines, barriers, stands etc. all display jagged edges and crooked lines on every circuit on the PS5 console but there are very few jagged edges on the PS4 Pro console. I have constantly attempted to tweak the settings on my 4K UHD Sony Bravia and the PS5 to solve the problem but it's still the same. I'm actually going to start playing F1 2021 on the PS4 Pro, which sounds nuts considering I have a PS5. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing all of the jagged edges on both versions of F1 2021 on the PS5?
Code masters did send out a message saying they had turned off Ray tracing to improve stability on consoles and are working to fix it up, so depending on when this was recorded could be an issue
This was recorded on PC. I was aware of that statement - though from what I read, it only pertained to the PS5 version of the game
I'll stay on 2020 then, not worth the 50$

I wont be buying a game every year. Little or no changes. Next time I will buy a new one will probably be around 2036 or 37.
21 definitely has better sound design, you can hear more small ticks and stutters based off of how the car is moving. But yeh visuals I did notice were downgraded a bit, which confused me I didn’t quite understand why they made some of those changes, although the color palette in 21 is a bit better I’d say. I absolutely hate the changes made to the career and team modes, very dumbed down and more difficult and those two things do not go hand in hand. Should’ve given more player choice if they were gonna up the difficulty. It’s not that much of a problem but I’d say the campaign is def the most redeeming factor of the game.
I think this game might be lacking a few details because of the switch to PS5/Xbox Series X. We had the same problem when F1 2014 came out. Ray-tracing even got removed for a while on PS5 because of a few issues. Hopefully, they'll do better in F1 2022
F1 2021 to me for start off from outside the cab. F1 2020 for inside the cab for start out. F1 2020 in the rain start out sounds better in m6 opinion.
Cars feel way more responsive, curbs are more dangerous and feels easier to spin, while bumps and track elevation are more noticeable. Sense of speed feels more realistic. Overall the physics feel much better in my opinion. And let's not forget the turbo whistle. The red bull sounds fantastic.
Is that 2021? I’m thinking of playing a season but not sure which is the better game to drive on F1 2020 or 2021? Just coming back to F1 games since 2013
F1 2021 should be a $10 upgrade from 2020 but no of course there not going to do that 😑

very hard to spot much difference between them except for being slightly sharper in some areas but i I agree they should have kept the reflective surfaces

Difficult to compare the cockpit engine sound of the McLaren because the 2020 car had a Renault engine and the 2021 a Merc engine.

we had a campaign but at what cost? i mean, if u maintain the same texture give you less work to do, instead of replace them, so why they replace with something worse? there were a lot of things that could be included to enhance the online experience in the leagues. They have added a campaign that no one needed, they have worsened the textures and the general quality of the environment and they have not improved the quality of life where it was needed. Nice job Cody, welcome EA.

I got it on Xbox One and I think this is the Codemasters' F1 game with more bugs I've seen in the last few years (I've played all codemasters F1 titles since 2009).

Just like the guy below me said: "Feels like they switch around on the graphics part like "this year we remove this nice road texture and put on the one from 5 years ago and on this house we replace this 5 year old texture with this new nice one" And in F1 2022 they do the other way around. ". It is really disappointing, how lazy developers are these days, there almost no progress anymore, there are games that are five or six years old that look better than new games, like for example Quantum Break. Even if they technically improve games, they make them uglier in many cases.
