Hi, you both have undertaken a great endeavor. Your comment about Juan de la Cruz being considered one of the greatest poets of the Spanish language without any other caveat is spot-on. Also right on are your comments about translation and the evolution of language . The brother who read in Spanish must be from Spain, judging from his accent. It was exquisito listening to his beautiful Castellano. It gave me a case of nostalgia and transported me back over the years. I say that because I have a master's degree in Spanish Literature that I received studying in Spain at the University of Madrid. I don't know of any way to give you audio feedback but the word Doña- pronounced dōn-ya- is a mark of respect but there is also familiarity with it because it is used with the first name of the person being addressed. You mentioned the Royal Spanish Academy and that you weren't exactly certain of its name. In Spanish it's called Real (pronounced ray-a- as in "father" l) Academia Española. Ah-ka-DAY-me-ah...
I'm very very impressed with your work. I first read John of the Cross in a secular University in that context and I will consider it an honor to follow you both with your extensive and profound Carmelite insight. Thank you. I'm going to get the translation. All the ones I have are much much older than the edition you're going to use for your study. Thank you so very much for undertaking this formidable challenge. You said you would like me to continue providing feedback so here are a couple of thoughts after listening to the lecture about the first stanza: Do any of the carmelites you know who are experts on Juan de la Cruz know if there is any connection, linguistically or otherwise, in the poem to his special love for the moriscos? He was the missionary to the Arabs of his day and I have always found it fascinating that a special part of the Carmelite vocation is to be a missionary, sometimes especially by carrying your cross without leaving the cloister as was the case for Thérèse de Lisieux. Thinking about the cross and St. John's metaphors, it occurs to me that wood able to bear a man's weight must be solid and strong. Yet, wood is also a vulnerable material susceptible to destruction.... our only antidote to final and irrevocable destruction, death, is Christ's Resurrection and his ultimate Victory, achieved through the ultimate helplessness and consequent vulnerability of crucifixion, both in and outside of time. I was thinking that humans are most vulnerable perhaps when they are most deeply in love. I also was thinking of the two study leaders' emphasis on St. John's lenses of past, future and his own exquisite rendering of his in-the- moment encounter of all-absorbing all-encompassing Union, expressed after-the-fact in the poem and in his attempt to share it in the commentary. I can't wait for the rest of this almost ethereal course. Thank you.

I first studied Living Flame of Love over 30 years ago as an OCDS. Walked El Camino de Santiago (last third French Way) with my daughter last Autumn and now it's time to bring the spirit of the mountains and St. John's Spain to his writing. Following this study will be interesting to see how "experiencing" the poem differs from "studying" -- that and 30 years of contemplative practice. Thank you for leading this and making it available to those of us at home.

Maybe in St. John's prologue when he speaks of "Transformation in God" and spanish "transformacion en Dios" the English translation would be best to say "transformation within God." Being "within" God is endless within God in "us" and within God.

Did Fr Rodriques Otilio collaborate with Fr Kieran in this translation?
Yes! Fr. Kieran and Fr. Otilio did these translations of John of the Cross before Fr. Otilio's death in 1994. Fr. Kieran completed this study edition of the work before his death in 2019.
