I'm American and I root for England in international football, mostly because I gained my appreciation for soccer when I did a year abroad in London. But also for a similar reason to what Oliver laid out, we can let the rest of the world have this one thing. It's the same reason I rooted for Canada in the gold medal match in the 2010 Olympic hockey tournament in Vancouver, even though I usually root for the scrappy underdog. The US going into Canada and beating them at their own game on the world stage would have just been cruel.
Their bit about CONCACAF is sheer genius. I appreciate that these two Brits from UEFA truly understand and have embraced the goofiness, craziness and sheer insanity that is CONCACAF.
