  • The history of the appearance of the legend of Shahi - Zinda is closely connected with the time of the invasion of the Arabs in the eighth century to ancient Samarkand. In addition to the seizure and destruction of lands, the Arabs brought with them a new religion - Islam. According to one of the variants of translation from the Arabic language, Shahi-Zinda means "Living, or Great ruler, sheikh". And this name is not accidental!
According to legend, there was a cousin of the great prophet Muhammad, Kussam ibn al Abbas, the khokim, the ruler of Mecca, who was sent with a small part of the troops to Samarkand to establish and spread Islam, the Prophet sent him to earth as his messenger. At the time of the recitation of his prayer, an attempt was made on his life, and as a result his head was cut off. However, due to the fact that Kussam ibn al Abbas belonged to the holy family, he did not die, contrary to common sense, but taking his head in his own hands, went down to the underground, where after drinking holy water, he received healing. Since then, they believe that he still lives there, in the underground, at the healing source.
This dungeon is a paradise with a beautiful garden, fragrant flowers and exotic birds. The paradise that disappeared deep underground was and is today on the territory where the Shakhi-Zinda necropolis is located. This is a holy place, which attracts guests and pilgrims from all over the world
