    I've always liked viewing Antares and monitoring the large variability of its brightness that occurs usually over a period of a few years , a clear sign of its Supernova destined growing instability. I've watched it since the late 1970s, so have had time to see it cycle its brilliance many times🎉

    This star caught my eye yesterday, during a hot summer night here in Oregon. It was twinkling so brightly and quickly, and alot of the color was so red. It's been interesting learning about this star.

    I live in northern England and we get Antares but not the tail of the Scorpion 🦂. Antares is my second lowest first magnitude star with Fomalhaut being the lowest.I have a fond memory of the Scorpion as about 6 years ago I was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Madrid overnight and out of the window mid Atlantic there was Scorpius hanging in the sky.

    I live in equator, i can see the Scorpius in perfect form almost every single night except when it's full moon because it'll be too bright. it's one of my favorite, in east java we call it "ental doyong" or "leaning palm tree"

    So glad you are back from your wonderful experience with NASA. Happy that my night sky lessons can continue and with even more insights from your “lessons”. with the “pros”. You are like having a private tutor!!
    The summer sky in my area (Long Island, NY) is so murky and light-polluted that the constellations and Milky Way are whatever my imagination can conjure up!! I’m happy when I can find the alpha stars in each constellation! I take what I can get!
    But… I keep looking up!

    I managed to capture an image of Antares that is extremely detailed. I used a Vespera 11 smart telescope. The long exposure reveals the stars surrounding chromosphere and the many smaller stars right next to it. I have posted a video of my results on my you tube page. It’s an actual image so no animation artistry employed. The page is called Screedy. The image is better than any you have shown here. But nice work on your video. I came here seeking more information on Antares. Thank you for your fine work.

    I’ve heard from numerous astrologers that Antares is the star of the warrior, great for military honors, courage, etc good example Mike Tyson’s moon placement is in Antares (Mike tyson modern day gladiator(boxer) who came and conquered his way to the top.

Also noticed -- After going through your video DENEB -- that a little bit beneath Deneb on the left there are also two stars that look like an eye, but cannot find the name. My second favourite constellation (after Crux 🇦🇺) because you can really see a scorpion 🦂
    It isn’t too difficult to find in the sky compared to your example photographs since most of the stars in them are dim or not visible. The downside is it’s visible during winter for us and it’s so dang cold to go outside 🥶
    There is an interesting mythological relationship with Orion. 😉

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I like the mythology of how Orion and Scorpius are on opposite sides of the sky. I haven’t thought about the fact that it would be cold for you during the time that Scorpius is out. That’s how it is when I see Orion and friends. It’s such a gorgeous sky but so cold. I didn’t have this issue when I lived in Hawaii though🏝

      How do you see a scorpion?
      Like head down, head up, claws etc.
      I used to see a head down one as a kid, but then saw a drawing head up with only 1 claw...and now I can't see one any longer.

    • @MyBlueZed
      @MyBlueZed ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PowerScissor Hey there! I’m at 35° South and I see the two arms toward the zenith; the tail is facing down (towards the south celestial pole. I can make out the arms, the heart (Antares) and the curving tail. Not a picture of a scorpion 🦂 but it’s the closest to what it’s supposed to represent I think. I mean, look at Aries 🤣

    • @PowerScissor
      @PowerScissor ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyBlueZed I now live at 47°N so I don't see the whole thing, and it's blocked by a tree from my house.
      Maybe I'm just misremembering what I saw as a kid. It feels like I used to see a head down two armed scorpion...sort of like this 🦂 when I lived farther South.
      Up here by Seattle there's so much light pollution from the city I don't see much anyway.

    Can anyone explain why objects in the night sky are often referred to as being visible during Summer in the N. hemisphere and Winter in the S. hemisphere?
    Wouldn't it make more sense to just say the months it is visible?
    I'm sure there's some obvious reason I'm not thinking of, so excuse my ignorance.

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to talk about what I see living in the northern hemisphere and how the patterns change with the seasons. However, I am evolving out of this way of teaching. I recognize it's easier now to say which months they appear as opposed to seasons, especially since the seasons are different in the hemispheres.

    Thank you for this video! Just one question - how a blue giant can be on the main sequence?

    • @Astronurd
      @Astronurd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fact that it’s on its main sequence enables it to burn vast amounts of hydrogen making it very hot and blue in color.

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it can be on the main sequence. However the term ‘blue giant’ can apply to a wide variety of stars. If a star is large, blue and luminous, this term is often used.
