I would like to present an alternative method for solving the percentage questions at 5:13. Do you know what this sign means? >>> % It literally means “of 100.” Or simply, 100. Knowing this we can find the answer in three simple steps. 1. 12/100

I have a question (time stamp 32:50) Why when you solved 2=8+2A you subtracted the 8 first to both sides and you didn’t divide both sides by 2. If you divided by 2 first you you’d have ended up with -7.

9:58 Order of operations is wrong. PEMDAS (BIDMAS) dictates that exponents come before multiplication. So the 1.02 would need to be squared first before multiplying by 100. For simplifying fractions, another method is to divide across top and bottom. So for the second multiplying question, you can divide the 3 and 6 by 3 to get 1 and 2. Then multiply across to get 1/16. Now for when explaining BIDMAS, it should be noted that D and M are what comes first, as is A and S. So in 5x6/2, you do 5x6 first even though D is listed first. Other than those little sticklers, thank you for making the video.
thought i should put this here but when you do bidmas or pemdas you need to remember that division and multiplication hold the same precedent. same goes for addition and subtraction. you have to solve your equation from left to right. so if you have 5x6 + 4/5 - 4 then you would multiply 5 and 6 then divide 4 by 5. then you would add the product and the quotient followed by the subtraction.
I learned the acronym PEMDAS and I see you suggest BIDMAS. I'm pretty sure they will both work. Because I recall PEMDAS working well for me over 20 years ago. I'm brushing up for my aptitude test! Watching a bit further into the video, I can understand the difference between exponent (E in PEMDAS) and indicate (I in BIDMAS)
This is very useful. Currently, im a journeyman drywall Finisher looking switch trades. I've always thought about joining IBEW, i think i want to fufill that dream now. @7:00. .... You could also realize that 25 percent is 1/4, and 1/4 of 76 is 19.... then add two 1 percents, 2 x 0.76 = 1.52... The answer is 19 + 1.52 = 20.52
The local I tested for didn't have any questions from chapters 2, 3 and 4. I got a lot of questions from chapters 1, 8, 9 (just a little more complicated) and 10. Some problems ended up with me solving fractions (adding and multiplying though) so brush up on that. I got several questions about analyzing functions and function information analysis as well. Calculators aren't allowed on the test and you'll be given paper and pencils. Just thought I drop this info so that others know what else to brush up on.
There’s an easier way to find percentages you can turn the percent into a decimal and multiply by the other number. The compound interest trick is awesome though thanks for this video it’s very helpful.

Thanks for the help! For the common ratio pattern at 4:10, I divided all the numbers by 5 and got the same answer. For computing compound interest 9:42, 1.02 squared or 1.02 x 1.02 = 1.0404. If you multiply (100 x 1.0404) you get $104.04, not $102.
@@davidwhite206 Yes, you can multiply those three number (100 x 1.02 x 1.02) in any order and it will work out the same. There are a lot of decimals to mess with when you multiply (1.02 x 1.02 )right off the bat though...
This video is super helpful but I’d also recommend looking into a video that teaches you how to solve a problem that’s using exponents in fractions I struggled with that the most
I love this video, but you gave the long way around of finding the percentage of a number. You can find the percentage way easier than that. i.e., 15% of 22 can easily be found by solving it as 22 × .15 The decimal takes 15 from being a whole number to a percentage of the number 1, so instead of adding up all those different percentages you can just do one multiplication problem and go on to the next question. I hope this makes sense to everyone out there reading this. I am no Math guru, but I do understand this area of it thoroughly.
@@nickolasb3642 you don't need a calculator to do that though? This way could be done with scratch paper. Do we get scratch paper to work out problems??
When finding percentages of a whole number, if we divide by 10, then divide by 10 again you get the one percent value. Theoretically you can just multiply that value by whatever they’re asking for right? So 12% of 80 1%= .8 so .8 x 12 =9.6

So I took Local 11 LA and 440 OC here in SoCal. This video DOES NOT apply for Local 11. Look up mechanical reasoning and arithmetic solutions on Google with word problems. Also a bunch of IS over OF problems. For 440, THIS is what’s going to be on the test but if you can afford it, iPrep has basically a 1:1 tests of what they have in the actual test. Theres gears, pully, weight questions like if this cart weighs 20kg and it’s on a steep hill versus this cart is 40kg and is on a stable flat hill what will happen etc. word problems such as if there is 96 screws in a can, 2/3 are in can one. 3/8 in can 2. 1/4 in can 3 and 1/3 in can for. how many screws are left in the four cans A) 11/16 B) 9/16 C) 13/32 D) 19/32 Study stuff like that

Love the video and the help you provided for us. Thank you. If it's not to much to ask, maybe in future videos can you please choose different colors that stand out more from the background. The quadratic formula part hurt my eyes trying to make out the different parts of the equation. Lol
Question for those who took the test, were there a lot of compound interest questions? The examples used here were so simple it made sense, but I was trying to study the subject a bit more using other videos and it can get extremely difficult without a calculator.
The formula says "(1 - depreciation % as a decimal). Which means a 10% depreciation rate will be represented as "0.1" and if you plug that into the formula that's "(1-0.1) =0.9. Good luck on the test champ.
@@dariospezio2152what formula is that called? Because in America this doesn’t make any sense the percentage gets moved over twice to the left making it 0.1% what part did he say in the formula that -0.1% is supposed to be apart of it? When and why and where did he say that and how does that make sense? As a matter of fact the practice test question actually gives a whole different answer than the formula he’s using and I got it right the way I did it that -0.1% doesn’t even make sense
I was curious too, but if you watch what he says, he's going to the right, when you did it, you multiplied to the right, 100 × .2 = 20 and 20 × 5 = 100, the next number is to the right so, it's × .2 to the right. Hope that makes any sense man.
Because the value decreases by 10% every year, and the initial percentage is 100%. If you subtract the change in percentage from the initial percentage : 100% - 10% = 90%, and 90% , you get 0.9 as the depreciation rate.
So the only have to find the first and second difference when a negative is involved? And you only have to find the first difference if there’s no negative?
@@TheCompleteGuide1 oh good lol I thought there would’ve been a drastic difference in answers found with the other solution. Thanks for the clarifier and thanks for this video it’s super helpful as I have a test here in about a week! 😎👍
Re. from 22:57 to 23:12. The BIDMAS acronym is problematic. Division should not come before multiplication. Remember My Dear Aunt Sally? Multiplication must be done first, followed by Division and then Addition and Subtraction. A better acronym I have seen is PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, MDAS.

@@BenjiBonsaii Hmm, probably not. Think about the fact that it's meant for kids coming out of high school for the most part. If anything they may be slightly more difficult, but not by much of they are I imagine.
@@oKyro Ok, so I'm 90% sure I failed the Math portion of the test. Every chapter is different I suspect, so your test may not be like mine. I was studying equations and how to solve them, that part of the Math portion I was confident in. But the other types of questions I was stumped. It was asking questions like if this is this and that is that, which statement is true for this question? Like some math theory type of shit. Stuff I wasn't studying for. And it asked those same kind of questions for linear graphs. Something I didn't study for. I was mainly focused on how to solve equations. I wasn't expecting to have math theory per sé thrown into the mix. You might want to brush up on whatever I'm explaining just to cover your bases. Hopefully it makes sense, I couldn't tell you what exactly to study.
You do you have a channel for graphs? I know when I took the test, there was a lot of graphs on there. I was rushed, I had a fierce, had an injury a year prior, and I didn’t get the slip to get extra time so I was rushed and messed up. That’s on me nobody else’s fault. But I just noticed you didn’t have a lot of graphs.
Bidmas or pemdas explained that way makes a lot of people make mistakes, which is why there's all those 'solve this problem' stuff on facebook that people mess up. Each two letters are the same step. So it's more like (Pe)(Md)(as). Brackets and Indices are solved on the same step as are division and multiplication, then add and subtract. Within each step you go left to right. So if you see 3-4+5 you do the whole thing left to right, not addition before subtraction.
The section about keeping track of the 1st and 2nd differences in number sequences was very useful for the test (I took it this past week). In the past for pattern questions like this I would just look at it and think about it and the pattern would not be that hard to find, but using the method described here made EVERY pattern recognition question on the test a near-brainless endeavor. From a real-world practical point of view I don't think the patterns that I saw in the test were necessarily realistic, so were not easy to identify intuitively. And I have a bit of a problem with the idea that like 15% of the entire math test score uses basically the same pattern type over and over, which highly favors anyone who happened to have been taught to look for that specific type of pattern. No exaggeration, all of the patterns were just analyzing the 2nd differences, none of them used multiplicative factors, prime numbers, squares, cubes, nothing. But, it is what it is, and thankfully I decided to watch this video even though I didn't feel I would have any problems on the test. I probably would've passed either way, but the method made it way easier.

Thank you so much! Everything that is covered in this video is on the test. (Except the compounding interest)It’s even in order. If you are taking the test, watch this video again and again until you can understand everything and do the problems quickly.
Dude idk who you are but you literally saving my life right now thank you so much
Man, this was such a throwback. My teacher never properly explained the FOIL method (didn’t even have an acronym to help), and another match teacher never properly helped me understand fraction, so I was always working with a deficit. This video, however, explains things really well and it feels like the missing puzzle pieces FINALLY clicked in after _years_
Couldn't come at a better time, thank you so much
Happy to help!
I would like to present an alternative method for solving the percentage questions at 5:13.
Do you know what this sign means? >>> %
It literally means “of 100.” Or simply, 100.
Knowing this we can find the answer in three simple steps.
1. 12/100
I would like to present an Alternative to your Alternative!
Instead of a fraction, move the decimal point over two digits to the left. Meaning your 12% of 80 is actually 80 x .12
It’s a quicker way to get the answer.

I tried multiplying the square first but I got different a answer for the second problem
You're correct. BUT even if you do 6/2 x 5 you still get the same answer.
thought i should put this here but when you do bidmas or pemdas you need to remember that division and multiplication hold the same precedent. same goes for addition and subtraction. you have to solve your equation from left to right. so if you have 5x6 + 4/5 - 4 then you would multiply 5 and 6 then divide 4 by 5. then you would add the product and the quotient followed by the subtraction.
just like the song said!

@7:00. .... You could also realize that 25 percent is 1/4, and 1/4 of 76 is 19.... then add two 1 percents, 2 x 0.76 = 1.52... The answer is 19 + 1.52 = 20.52

I got a lot of questions from chapters 1, 8, 9 (just a little more complicated) and 10. Some problems ended up with me solving fractions (adding and multiplying though) so brush up on that. I got several questions about analyzing functions and function information analysis as well.

For the common ratio pattern at 4:10, I divided all the numbers by 5 and got the same answer.
For computing compound interest 9:42, 1.02 squared or 1.02 x 1.02 = 1.0404. If you multiply (100 x 1.0404) you get $104.04, not $102.
So you can just basically multiply them together, and then multiply that answer by 100?
@@davidwhite206 Yes, you can multiply those three number (100 x 1.02 x 1.02) in any order and it will work out the same. There are a lot of decimals to mess with when you multiply (1.02 x 1.02 )right off the bat though...

Sorry if I sound stupid but what about the order of operations? @ 10:00?

I love this video, but you gave the long way around of finding the percentage of a number. You can find the percentage way easier than that. i.e.,
15% of 22 can easily be found by solving it as 22 × .15
The decimal takes 15 from being a whole number to a percentage of the number 1, so instead of adding up all those different percentages you can just do one multiplication problem and go on to the next question. I hope this makes sense to everyone out there reading this. I am no Math guru, but I do understand this area of it thoroughly.

When doing BIDMAS or PEMDAS, how does the left to right rule work?
Is BIDMAS the same as PEMDAS? Just wondering for a.. friend...
Yes.
I just asked the same thing? But PEMDAS places multiplication before division and BIDMAS does the opposite
When finding percentages of a whole number, if we divide by 10, then divide by 10 again you get the one percent value. Theoretically you can just multiply that value by whatever they’re asking for right? So 12% of 80 1%= .8 so .8 x 12 =9.6
For (BIDMAS) don't division and multiplication go from left to right and addition and subtraction as well
Yes.

Isn’t 10% as a decimal .1 I’m confused on why it’s .9 10:37
The formula says "(1 - depreciation % as a decimal). Which means a 10% depreciation rate will be represented as "0.1" and if you plug that into the formula that's "(1-0.1) =0.9. Good luck on the test champ.
@@dariospezio2152what formula is that called? When and why and where did he say that and how does that make sense? As a matter of fact the practice test question actually gives a whole different answer than the formula he’s using and I got it right the way I did it that -0.1% doesn’t even make sense
Can someone please further explain the common ratio, number pattern. Why would the difference be multiplied by .2 and not divided by 5
I was curious too, but if you watch what he says, he's going to the right, when you did it, you multiplied to the right, 100 × .2 = 20 and 20 × 5 = 100, the next number is to the right so, it's × .2 to the right. Hope that makes any sense man.
What probelms are actually on the test? Does anyone know?
Did you find out?
How’d you get 0.9 when calculating for depreciation?
Because the value decreases by 10% every year, and the initial percentage is 100%. If you subtract the change in percentage from the initial percentage : 100% - 10% = 90%, and 90% , you get 0.9 as the depreciation rate.

@@davidwhite206 were the problems similar to those in the video? I have my test in a few days.
Is there a math and reading part ?
Thank you
You're welcome
