With all the traffic violations that occur on the roads if this is what the Florida Highway Patrol is choosing to enforce then the Florida Highway Patrol has lost their way.
As a truck driver myself cars are in such a hurry they don’t want to let trucks over. I for one can see further ahead than a car and make an attempt to move over but cars either speed up or they don’t leave room between them and the car in front of them.
I HATE HATE HATE this law. While I support law enforcement and wish them all safe travels, my issue is that this law forces people to merge in high speed traffic, dangerously close to other cars. I can't tell you how many times I am riding along lah dee dah in the middle lane and a Trooper is stopped on the shoulder ahead and everyone and their mother slides left into the middle lane, absolutely ignoring any following distance rule, and creating a dangerous situation where one error could create a massive multi-car pile up. And for what? If I am getting pulled over on the highway, I turn on my hazard lights (4 ways) on and wait until there is a safe spot to pull over, such as halfway on the grass. I want the Trooper safe. How about Troopers just follow a car and not light them up until they know there is a safe place to pull over? Also this ticket blitz targeting people who don't forcefully merge left and slow down is ABSOLUTE BULLSH*T. You want us to support law enforcement but you ambush motorists who are just driving right and staying safe, minding their own business.
It's disconcerting that this Lieutenant is seen in the video often standing right next to the traffic lane for apparently no reason whatsoever (1:31, 3:02, 3:14). The point of the Move Over law is to keep people safe... in conjunction with the people taking other steps to ensure their safety (like NOT standing immediately next to the traffic lane if they can help it). Her brazenly and obliviously standing right next to the traffic lane gives the impression that it's not so dangerous after all... if she's willing to do it merely for a photo op.
No, that was done to show that even flashing lights on a emergency vehicle (Trooper car) people still won't move over. The new law says ANY VEHICLE on the shoulder, now imagine you on your way home late one night and you have flat tire doesn't matter what side of your car, wouldn't you want others to move over one lane for your safety?
Yes but sometime moving over can be more dangerous than staying in that lane, what I do sometime is slow down to about 35-40 mph acknowledging I see the Leo and the stop vehicle, and I cannot change lanes👍
I'm a truck driver of just over 25 years back when I first started driving a semi truck I has told back then to move over if any vehicle is in the right shoulder or left shoulder or if can't move over slow down to a safe speed I live in Alabama just west of Columbus,GA
good, keep issuing these tickets. too many police officers, tow truck drivers, and emergency response people are having their lives risked by careless drivers
I completely agree with the old law, but if you're going to enforce the new law you need to start enforcing "emergency stopping only" on the interstates. I see people stop to change drivers, take a leak, change diapers, and all kinds of BS not meant to be done on the side of an interstate. So many damn vehicles on the shoulder you might as well not have a far right lane🤷♂️🤷♂️
you either move over or slow down for police, work crews or someone stuck on side of the road and tow trucks pretty much any one on the side of the road
This has been a Law in Ontario Canada since the early 2000's traffic violations are taken seriously over here, from a License suspension plus fines and points to jail time.
Here from NYC when I came down it was mind blowing when I saw people did not move over for anyone on the side of the road very selfish driving behavior
Federal law requires anyone working on an interstate to wear High-Vis gear. Tan uniforms blend in and the rear of police cars need to be marked the same as ambulances and fire trucks.
They are. Big red holographic stickers! There's also big bright blue & yellow lights! lol. That's only because workers are usually farther away from equipment & safety lights where as troopers are very close.
If youve ever been broke down or stranded on an interstate, you know full well how much this is necessary. Without flashing lights around, people refuse to move over flying by at 70-80+ merely feet from you. Its so ignorant to do it. WHY WOULDN'T YOU GET OVER?!?!
As a tow truck driver in Florida, FHP needs to do a better job. I've had fhp sit in the median near where I was loading and people don't move over and they just sit there.
There are way too many people moving to Florida from up north. Florida needs to pass a law that you have to retake your driving test to prove you understand the laws and rules.

Standing in the middle of the highway is definitely not safe. Also, using a cellphone while driving is illegal in Florida. The move over law is not a new law. It's been around for years.
Unfortunately, humans still don't care about this mover law. When a road ranger is working, either disable vehicles or accident no-one move over and don't forget those individuals on the cells phone driving and texting, every department should enforce this law
Minnesota resident here, i was taught this when i was in Driver's Education, and I'm 36. Interesting that Florida residents had not been taught this especially if they respect LEOs so much
When the traffic is heavy and ppl start moving over for a broke down vehicle/officer, it sometimes ends up turning the hiway into a parkinglot. I'm sure you've been there: Driving just fine, but all of a sudden traffic hits the skids and in 3 car lengths, yer sitting dead still. You creep along for like a 1/4 mile, then, out of no where, traffic just starts going again! Look around, nothing, maybe a guy changing a tire if you're lucky.
Then they shouldn't make a law where they have to pull over in a safe place, not in the highway. Therefore take the first exit and make it safer because the street is public

@@jmorton7089 I've heard the FL Troopers have a saying, "Up to nine your fine, but ten you're mine!". Having spent a lot of time driving through VA in the 90s', I'm thinking you all were more like one over, get pulled over. 😏
That has been taken care of.... check the news a couple of weeks ago...
The move over law is a bad law, it always has been a bad law. I am a retired Trooper and I witnessed on the Florida Turnpike in Miami just south of Tamiami Trail in the southbound lanes a driver who slowed and swerved to the left to obey the move over law and a total of 7 other vehicles had to take evasive action to avoid a crash, there ended up being 7 vehicles that were spinning out of control and how none of them hit anything is a miracle. There was another move over law incident that occurred on Alligator Alley in Collier County (Naples Florida) where a car went to move over and there was already another car in the inside lane next to them, the car swerved back to the right and lost control striking a car that was pulled over by a trooper hitting that car in the left side resulting in the death of a passenger in the back seat of the car that was pulled over.
Just because something looks good on paper does not mean it is good in the real world. Move over laws should all be removed from the books. With all the traffic violations that occur on the roads if this is what the Florida Highway Patrol is choosing to enforce then the Florida Highway Patrol has lost their way.
Good law . I drove tow trucks for 30 years and we have a highway here with now break down lane. I got hit by a car mirror once car was going about 40
how big of a paycheck did you get?
@@ardoin_337 Nothing car never stopped. I got a swollen elbow for a week
We need this nationwide.
Thought it was, states out here cowboyin' it and they respect law enforcement, ha joke!!
All 50 states and the District of Columbia, have a Move Over requirement.
The police alway put you in danger. I would hate to see the police in my demise.
Use common sense and common courtesy, be respectful of everyone and move over, the life you save could be your own. 👍😎
They need to explain this in Spanish here in southern Florida where 50 percent don't speak or read English. PUT SIGNS IN SPANISH!!!!!!
or learn the English language.
And Creole also
@@lukeWiz44 I was about to say the same thing lol. What an ignorant comment to make.
She has no common sense.
Its common sense to move over. When i moved to Florida, i was shocked that people ignored emergency vehicles.
The cop is also suppose to make sure when u pull someone over, u pull them over in a safe area
Yes but sometime moving over can be more dangerous than staying in that lane, what I do sometime is slow down to about 35-40 mph acknowledging I see the Leo and the stop vehicle, and I cannot change lanes👍
Slow down & turn on emergency flashing lights
I'm a truck driver of just over 25 years back when I first started driving a semi truck I has told back then to move over if any vehicle is in the right shoulder or left shoulder or if can't move over slow down to a safe speed
I live in Alabama just west of Columbus,GA
They need to create an Advert on IG and FB. Reminder for all the newbies moving here and everyone else in general.
As a CDL holder we’ve already been practicing this 🎉
It sucks when you can’t move to the other lane due to congestion but I can of course slow down.
good, keep issuing these tickets. too many police officers, tow truck drivers, and emergency response people are having their lives risked by careless drivers
I completely agree with the old law, but if you're going to enforce the new law you need to start enforcing "emergency stopping only" on the interstates. I see people stop to change drivers, take a leak, change diapers, and all kinds of BS not meant to be done on the side of an interstate. So many damn vehicles on the shoulder you might as well not have a far right lane🤷♂️🤷♂️
just did the drive from nyc to st pete. people pulled on the side of the road, no hazard lights, in the middle of the night.
People will now wreck each other to move over in front of faster traffic. Good luck
People in left lane need to be cooperative and not prevent others from moving over
@@Asidebar Like what, slowing down in the left lane? You have to make it make sense
@@Asidebar Left lane is for fast moving traffic. There's this other road rule called "going with the flow of traffic".
that truck passed the vibe check
you either move over or slow down for police, work crews or someone stuck on side of the road and tow trucks pretty much any one on the side of the road
This has been a Law in Ontario Canada since the early 2000's traffic violations are taken seriously over here, from a License suspension plus fines and points to jail time.
They need to amplify this law. If you've been ticketed for not moving over more than once you should lose your license for a time.
Here from NYC when I came down it was mind blowing when I saw people did not move over for anyone on the side of the road very selfish driving behavior
As a tow truck driver I appreciate it 🙏🏾
Federal law requires anyone working on an interstate to wear High-Vis gear.
Shocker that Florida has to make laws based on common sense. 🙄
Not just Florida though. I believe all states have the law now because of how many people don't move over.
No one accused cops of having common sense. Decide to pull people over at the most unsafe spots.
That Law isn't 20 Years Old.
Going 90 on a 70 too. These are the same drivers who don't give bicycles enough room. No respect for others!
The people on the bikes are probably in the middle of the road blowing through lights and stop signs illegally.
@@tb6133I’ve never seen one stop for a stop sign
I stop for stop signs on my bike ^^
and emergancy vehicles
@@SavedGaming_Official Average bicycle weighs 30 pounds. SUV weighs 5,000 pounds. SUVs have large grills, large side mirrors and large airbag pillars that block frontal views. SUVs can go 100 MPH. A Bicycle has full 360 degree views and super slow. You would need a 100 cyclists running a stop sign at the same time to do the same damage as an SUV lol.
642 move over tickets, how many left lane hog tickets . The left lane rule is worse, causing more road rage and more accidents.
Everybody just slow down.
That motors absolutely should not have been stopped in the Gore point that is the worst place to stop on the freeway
I'm blown away at how clueless or the sense of entitlement they drive even faster as others do move over.
that seems like a pretty easy dismissal in court. “Your honor, by the time I saw the incident on the side of the road, I was unable to merge to the next lane because of conflicting traffic, and I did reduce my speed”(unless a officer clocked you).
Slow down next to the shoulder lane by 20 MPH will probably get your vehicle rear-ended by some stupid morons who are violating some other law ??
Yeah, and you're probably not going to get a settlement check as the vehicle (s) that hit you as the owners have NO insurance !!!!
OR, if you can signal and pull onto the shoulder but STOP way,way behind the stopped LEO .
20 years ago my old boss was driving a semi and a woman who was suicidal parked on the side of the highway, stepped in front of his truck. Horrific
Use your hazard lights when you pull over
It's called NOT move over and stop!!!!! YOU WILL BE REAR ENDED!!!!!! SAD VERY SAD
Does that go for broke down vehicles that’s vacant on the shoulder of the highway?
I do that already. I move over for any car I see on the shoulder with their blinkers on. I'm trying to protect everyone because everybody's safety matters. Just remember when they pull you over they are putting your and their life on the line.
This is about your safety! 💰 💰 Are they still buying it?
10% of drivers claim they don't know the law the other 90% say they don't care.
Give everyone young in Florida that ticket and right across America cause that is in the road manual too.. anyone that can’t move over they need to slow down to a complete stop and pass safe
look at the memorial signs of people who perished on the shoulders there's so many
Never make a left side approach on the freeway. Plus, you're standing partially in the roadway to shoot lidar/radar and on the white fog line and wirh your back to traffic lieutenant.
I do because Iam a semi truck driver but its all about safety but hardly any cars do it it should be enforced in every state
The Nissan driver should’ve been charged with alluding or attempting to evade
Just say taxes are going up. If it was about safety then stop stopping drivers on an active highway. You can still get revenue thru speed cams.
Speed cameras as well as right turn cameras are both unconstitutional because they deprive you of your constitutional right to face your accuser.
People will have the room to move over and choose not too
Unfortunately, these enforcement efforts have very little to no effect on fixing the problem. No matter where you drive, you will see endless move over violations. I don't believe it will change.
Unfortunately moved to Florida 3 years ago and never in my life have I seen drivers so bad. Speeders, careless drivers, very very dangerous. They are rude and careless. NO regard for anything or anyone. Dented cars, banged up cars, no bumpers. Terrible. Everyone on their cellphones. So dangerous. You are risking your life every time you get into your car in florida. The worst drivers I have ever seen.
I guess that regular people broken down aren't as important as " public servants " are. If it's truly a safety issue, why not pull over for all stopped vehicles ?
But it kinda hard to put put that move over law because they realize cars speed in the fast lane whether cops present or not
It's the passing lane dude. Not the fast lane. Theres a reason it's called move over
@@EvilNeuro You know you don't have a right to speed in the left lane right? If the speed limit is 70 MPH and you are doing 80 MPH in the left lane the judge is not going to buy you were just passing other traffic.
@@mustangecoboosthpp3869 I literally implied what you said.
It's not the fast lane.
The only time speeding in it is okay is when everyone else is. Since then you HAVE to go faster or u cause a crash ya
@@EvilNeuro there are no exmeptions from laws against speeding just because you see other speeding doen't mean you should speed you don't look for an excuse to break traffic laws.
@@acethedriver2895 let's assume the speed limit it 55 and everyone in the fast or passing lane is going 65
If you start going 55 in it you will cause a crash.
To prevent crashes you have to go with the flow of traffic. Sometimes this means going higher or lower then the limit
Going to slow is actually more dangerous then faster (to a point)
However the passing lane I'd to pass a car and immediately get back over.
Maybe next time do the story correctly it’s either move over or slow down.
How about make a law to slow down when a cop pulls someone over. Also sometimes the other cars won't let you pull over.
How about this and get the hell out of the fast lane if you’re not passing. Drives me crazy down here.
If people in FL don't know this by now. They shouldn't be driving
Ive always done this since Ive been driving, people are idiots and common sense is long gone.
I drive the S Florida Turnpike to and from work - just wondering when someone will total my car and maybe me as I slow down the few times I actually get up to the speed limit - they follow 1 or 2 car lengths while doing and looking at other things while driving - and you also have a bunch driving more then 20 miles more then you even if you are being pushed up to 80 - I am expecting more fatal collisions due to this law - I am not saying the law is bad, the drivers are and this gives them more chances to ram you - Note: I have not been on I-95 in almost 15 years because it is not worth the risk -
There have been fatal crashes caused by people attempting to obey the move over law in Florida one was on Alligator Alley where someone tried to move over only there was a car to their left, they swerved back to the right and lost control of their car and hit the car that was pulled over killing the left rear passenger. There have been many other incidents involving crashes and some where no crash occurred due to pure luck over the move over law. The move over law may look great on paper but in the real world it is a total failure.
More bull about move over for police safety, what about the left lane hogs . I have yet to see someone drive 5 miles in the left lane and no one pulls them over
Standing in the middle of the highway is definitely not safe. Also, using a cellphone while driving is illegal in Florida. The move over law is not a new law. It's been around for years.
The law should be that you pull off on the soonest exit! So stupid...
Unfortunately, humans still don't care about this mover law. When a road ranger is working, either disable vehicles or accident no-one move over and don't forget those individuals on the cells phone driving and texting, every department should enforce this law
You mean road pirates.
I think a better option would be to take the nearest exit and on to a proper parking lot.
what if im in a 10 mph zone, I guess i got to reverse?
Just park in the travel lane, wheel cranked to right, set the parking brake. The cruiser will protect both you and the pulled over motorist.
I personally dont stop on the motorway, we can go to the nearest gas station, you being annoyed with me, isnt worth me risking my life on the shoulder.
That lieutenant, is about that life! That woman's not playing games!😮
The most stupid thing I have ever seen is a sobriety field test conducted on a highway, especially at night. How could a cop force a citizen to perform a circus act along a dangerous road with vehicles passing by at 75 miles per hour so close? Where is the driver's and officer's safety?
Common sense, really.
Lot's of folks lack common sense.
She could pull me over😮 but in all seriousness how are you going to pull people over for this while you let these people on dirt bikes and ATVs run up and down the road and don't do nothing about it just how can you justify that
Wasn't sure of the new law. High alert on the interstate. But, it's a good law.
Would suck to be issued a move over citation while 87 cars fly by you, none moving over themselves. What is wrong with you people?
That’s what happens as well when you start taking people that are innocent out of their cars just to talk to them. They can be better protected inside their car.
