    As a woman of color, I'd recommend doing protective hair styles so you don't have to worry about blow-drying or straightening your hair. This can be braids, getting hair installed, etc. I've always gone natural, but sometimes that can be a lot of work and doesn't give me the look I desire for those vacation photos. For the first time, I'm trying out faux dread locks and I'm excited to test them out. They're a bit pricey, but you only have to buy one set and they last for a really long time and can be re-used.

  • @lucienne9476
    @lucienne9476 5 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    You dont actually have to buy mini sized toiletries (they are sometimes really expensive for the little amount you get). You can buy a set of mini bottles (Ikea, Sephora, etc.) and fill it with the stuff you actually have at home and love. I would.also recommend taking only stuff you really like and and have tried before 😊 and if you bought.something that is in a small sized bottle and can be opened, rinse it and use it again and again 😊 and for you perfume buy a perfume atomizer, dont take whole bottle of it 😊

    • @americanfairy
      @americanfairy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good tip for refilling some of those bottles, if your product is really runny, is to use a flask funnel. They're the best!

    • @thedancingemt
      @thedancingemt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got a kit of a bunch of travel sized bottles complete with a funnel for refilling for $5 at Marshall’s. and it comes in a clear bag so you can use it as a liquid bag for security. I would definitely recommend investing in one of those because it’s convenient and also a little more eco-friendly.

    I'm all about the baby wipes. Sometimes you can't or don't have time to shower and they are a lifesaver. Also I bring a few freezer ziplocks(or stasher bags) for wet/dirty clothes and other storage needs. I pack my bathing suit in it. It means if my suit is not dry by the time I leave my destination, I don't get everything else wet

    • @xMorganTaylor
      @xMorganTaylor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this! My husband and I always pack baby wipes for after use of doing number two. I never used baby wipes until I started dating him, but now I can't imagine a life without them. Side note: I'd make sure in whatever country you're visiting that you're allowed to flush such things down the toilet.

    • @susie9893
      @susie9893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Go the zip lock bags! SO many uses - you'll never travel again without them once you try them (store anything you're worried about leaking in transit, for snacks or any food items you take out of packaging or peel then don't finish, anything that might not have dried from your shower b4 u get back on the road - washer, soap, shower cap or underwear that hasn't quite dried, dry-proof electronics etc etc)

    Loved this!
    I would add going to Ulta or Sephora and asking for free samples, specifically things you already use. They sometimes have great masks! I also always travel with disinfecting wipes so I can clean literally everything in my area on the plane. I also bring personal wipes so I can "shower" on longer flights.

    Ibuprofen is also great for toothache as you may not have access to a dentist while travelling. There's a warning though. It's fine for occasional relief of pain, but don't take it continuously for weeks or more because it can cause stomach ulcers.

    Shampoo is actually a great substitute for laundry detergent if you're in a bind or don't have tons of space.
    I also love to carry a cloth grocery bag that packs small so I'm not using too many plastic bags for no reason (since a lot of countries don't have the best disposal/recycling programs, I feel extra guilty using one use plastics travelling) ☺️

  • @madimcentire2513

    I always travel with wet wipes/make-up wipes. They're great for those days you don't have time for a shower, or when you've got a long flight and just need a quick touch up.
    On longer trips I'll pack some sort of food from home (my go-to is poptarts), because when the homesickness hits, sometimes you just want a little taste of home.
    And plastic bags of all sizes! Good for packing snacks, lunch, or other things while you're at your location, bigger ones can be used for wet clothes/swim suits, and you can use them to separate things in your luggage on your way there/back if you've got small items that are easily lost in your suitcase.

    The hot water bottle is an AMAZING idea. At the hacienda where I stayed in Ecuador is built traditionally so there's no central heating, obviously. So at night during turndown, the staff would leave a hot water bottle tucked into the bed so when I crawled in my bed was toasty warm. This actually helped in more ways than one, because I ended up having Acute Mountain Sickness and one night felt nauseated and so cold, so I hugged that hot water bottle all night long.

    • @susie9893
      @susie9893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to use that stuff a lot too but then I read a few different articles saying how toxic it is - dcdd not something I wanted coming in contact with my body.
      Just do what I do when buying clothes - they have to survive the crush test (I grasp a handful of the garment and hold it tightly in my fist for approx 1min - if after that time it is relatively winkle free then it's passed; either that or if I really love it then I'll buy it knowing I'll never travel with it - I RARELY make exceptions altho I do have a few items that can get away with rocking the wrinkled look; have to say that this is 1 of the few ways where packing for cold beats packing for heat cos winter fabrics have it over summer ones).

      The Wandering Quinn yes I do! I’ve been traveling in hot climates for a year, but pack in a cold climate. So here’s what you do. When your home (cold place) microwave the oil or just heat it up and then pour it into the liquid small container (like one for shampoo, not a jar). It will harden on the plane, but after being in country for a few hours into melt

    The hot water bottle reminds me of this lovely Tibetan guesthouse owner in Darjeeling bringing them to the room after sundown every day. It was a saving grace after having switched climates from the tropical south to the sub-zero north! ❤️

    Do you recommend getting money from your bank before a trip or converting it after you’ve arrived ?

    • @heynadine
      @heynadine  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bank before hand :) or atm in the country

    • @Obituarybunny

      Hey Nadine are the exchange rates less if you go to an ATM ?

    • @ahhitskatie9094
      @ahhitskatie9094 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angie M I personally like to do both. I’ll take out enough for a few days before (just enough for necessary expenses), and then taking out the rest as I go in the country

    • @Obituarybunny
      @Obituarybunny 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amber Eff thanks ! I was curious cause I’ve never gone to an atm while in another country but from what I’m gathering I just have to use it like I would in the US and it’ll convert it for me 😂😂

      Don't carry large amounts of cash on your person while exploring the location because if you get mugged you lose all your money. While in Amsterdam I met 2 Americans who were robbed of hundreds of dollars in the street and had to wire their families to send them money. I was also mugged there but I had less than $10 on me. I had taken the advice of the hostel owner to only carry as much money as you think you will spend on the night.

    Great tips! My tip for wrinkled clothes is simply to wet them, shake them a bit and hang them to dry! Only works if you got time though! =)

      Sanna & Toni tried that in Malaysia, but it was so humid it didn't dry. After 12 hours I just took the blow dryer to dry it 😂

      Better yet take it into bathroom with you and steam it while you shower - most of wrinkles fall out but yeah in really humid areas this'll just be sticky when you put it on 😝

    With things like ibeprophen and medications: does anyone (TSA, etc.) care if they're in those little unmarked travel containers (like the one you used in this video)? I always get a little unsure about that.

      Rose I always carry them in their original container / packaging especially when going to countries with stringent drug laws like Malaysia. I calculate the number of pills and bring just enough to last me the trip.

    Hats and hair ties are life savers for me while traveling! Do you have any tips for hair removal while traveling? I'm going to Ghana for 6 weeks and we are not supposed to drink the water or use it for shaving. Do you have any tips for when traveling to places like this?

    • @TheLauren1113
      @TheLauren1113 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Laura Pierson what about waxing before you go or using a hair removal cream? I would suggest laser hair removal because it saves rime for life but sounds like you won’t have time to complete the treatments in fine.

    Hey:) One question: How does one use the ibuprofens when being sunburnt?

    • @clarehenry4960
      @clarehenry4960 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Katharina Feustel It reduces inflammation in the cells that are damaged from the sun, also reduce the temperature slightly, but if your really burning up from sun stroke would be better to take paracetamol as well

    • @clarehenry4960
      @clarehenry4960 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought you said why, just 400mg every 4 hours maximum, paracetamol 1000mg every four hours. Drink plenty of water and aftersun
