    Investing in hedge funds by yourself can be risky due to their complex strategies, high fees, and potential for significant losses. Without expert knowledge, it's challenging to fully assess the risks and returns, making professional guidance crucial.

      Hedge funds can be tricky to navigate without deep financial expertise. The complex strategies and high fees involved mean that the risks can be substantial, and it’s hard to fully grasp these without experience. Professional guidance is key to making informed decisions and avoiding potential pitfalls.

A financial adviser can help navigate these complexities, ensuring that investments are well-managed and aligned with financial goals. I really respect how genuine you are after being in this industry so long and appreciate the informative video that just reaffirms why I haven't started a firm yet. :) TBH, all of the above listed in the video is why so many traders (myself included) often give up the 'upside' with starting our own firm rather than joining an established one in a silo and taking a PL split. Infrastructure needs especially in the HFT space benefit from large economies of scale and are much easier to share across many teams/silos. Really cool you have another start-up for some of these data needs that are hard to get from 3rd party vendors at a reasonable cost.

      Investors should be cautious about their exposure and be wary of new buys, especially during inflation. Such high yields in this recession is only possible under the supervision of a professional or trusted advisor like Mr Sam.

    Christina! You need to make more videos about this experience. This is pure Gold! There is a major part that you are leaving out. What is your marketing strategy for raising funds from strangers? How do you compete? OR are you small fund merely raising from friends and family ... enough to give you a respectable portfolio? That makes a huge difference in the difficulty component. Anyway, keep going. This is brilliant.

    Quick questions:
    1) How long of a track record (portfolio) did you have to build before launching your venture?
    2) What was your initial cap in the beginning?

    • @FXPhysics
      @FXPhysics 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am also interested. But this video has mostly demonstrated that setting up a hedge fund these days is almost essentially about running the legal & regulatory Olympics - with trading performance and fulfilling your fiduciary duty being an after thought. Great info here but such a buzz kill.

    • @ChristinaQi
      @ChristinaQi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      We didn't have a previous track record, which made the chances of success extremely rare. We raised a round of GP funding while simultaneously raising LP funding - thus, had a few million in operating capital before launch. That was the only way we would've survived. I'd like to think that the good things we did outweighed all of the mistakes we made, thus leading me to this point today. Thanks for your comment and questions.

    Christina, I really appreciate that you are willing to spend time sharing your knowledge and experiences. I think starting a hedge fund would be a really fun hobby, whether I do it as a side hustle or as something I do in retirement in a few years. I have what is for me a simple spreadsheet that I use to trade stocks, and it produces 2 or 3 buy and sell orders each year, with decent annual returns. I am thinking that starting a hedge fund for my family and friends is how I'd like to start; they could invest small amounts of money and hopefully grow it to help pay off a mortgage early or buy a car or something along those lines. I'm interested in opening basically the most basic hedge fund possible (I won't need any sophisticated trading algorithms, I don't think I need any employees other than those who will keep it in compliance with the law, and maybe I could hire them part-time?), the only quotes data I need is readily available on Yahoo Finance, and I can hand-enter my trades since they are so infrequent!), and so I'm curious about if I need any special degrees, licenses, certifications, and so forth to start. I would feel foolish walking into a lawyer's office and telling them I want to start a hedge fund, since I have no idea what I need to get started. But if you and others are able to start a hedge fund from your dorm room, it clearly can't be unattainable! I am in no hurry to get started, but it would be a really fun hobby and learning experience for me to look forward to doing. Please let us know the nuts and bolts of what a person needs to get started!

    Christina, I have read a number of articles on you and watched a number of interviews. Your brilliance and foresight leave me in the dust!
    You said in the video here that you can give limited advice--and I am sincerely asking it. Your hedge fund structure is 0 and 40. I understand giving up the management fee but how limited would the fund be as it is marketed to investors, if the hedge fund manager had an 8% hurdle and took a share of the profits quarterly instead of at the year's end?? Now you can certainly set aside the first 8% profit in a year but it seems critical to rely on some kind of a stream of income--.
    So my question to you is this: Would a hedge fund cripple its marketing team by offering a 0 and 40 fund, with an 8% hurdle that is credited to the investor immediately when 8% is earned, but then split up the profit at the end of each quarter as opposed to waiting till the end of the year?
    I really need your unbiased answer here and I thank you very much in advance, for that. Keep up the good work and good luck to you in your new ventures.

      Thanks for your questions. Before launching the fund, we started out in quant trading but realized that the faster we could analyze data and place/modify orders, the higher our PnL. Thus the foray into HFT, running low-capacity, uncorrelated, alpha-driven strategies.

Some people, for example, may be coming from other areas of tech but don't have the data science and/or finance skills, while others maybe have finance or econ skills but not the tech and/or data science skills. What is the fastest way to get profitable trading and be able to offset income in a meaningful way, so as to free up more time to learning and honing skills in this craft, rather than slaving away in our 9-to-5? Thank you so much for sharing all this content, you're truly an incredible inspiration.

    How much all the daily operations cost per month? The lawyers, accountants, office rent, all the data services, the whole nine yards, must be hundreds of thousand of dollars in monthly expenses?
    And whose money do you use to pay for those expenses? Yours and the money of your investors?

    Great high-level video, Christina! Looking forward to hear you to elaborate on the topics touched in the video.
    If I plan to start a hedge fund with 0% management fee and performance fee only, am I required to have a professional license to run the fund? The fund will invest in stocks, ETFs, and derivatives. Thanks so much!

      Yes - depending on what you're trading, how you're structured, and how much you're managing, you'll need to get certain series licenses (for us it was Series 3 and 65). Fee structure doesn't affect licenses I believe. Sorry I forgot to mention licenses in my video!

      @@ChristinaQi What if the company is structured as a prop firm, where the investors are partners of the firm? Thanks!

    Hey Christina! Thank you so much for doing this video! Our team is located in LA and looking to start a hedge fund so this is exactly the info we are looking for! Will you be kind enough to introduce us to the law firm you used? We talked to a couple so far but they told us different things. Please let me know! Thank you so much and we will check out your new startup as well. We might need that down the line! :)

    Seriously useful video - and take this from someone who knows - who has been involved in launching 200 plus funds - very generous by Christina to do this - the quality of your legal partner is super super important.

    I do really want to start a hedge fund, but not quite in this lifetime as I'm kinda busy doing stuff. Going to bookmark this video and come back to it In my future incarnations. Hope that's okay with you? I might have a different username or usernames as the centuries and millennia fly on by but my avatars or profile pics will be eerily similar. We'll definitely talk then okay? Thank you.

    Hi Christina, I loved your video. You said it took u 3 years to start the fund, I would like to know how much would be the cost for managing all these kind of activities and, have u took any funds from investors for managing your activities or u managed it with your own funds. Also, Can u please make short videos on every step that u have mentioned in the above video but in detail with explaining the best suitable options.
