I remember requesting Lantern a while ago and getting a response saying you'd do it. I've been wondering where that video was for a while, but having seen the length of the video... that must have taken a lot of work.
I wanted Lantern to be the last Modern guide since every other deck is relevant to it, and more and more viable decks kept popping up (thanks Aspiringspike).
I've been avoiding this video for a while, when I see it in my reccomended I think "How can somebody proficient with every deck in Modern have put in enough time with lantern to write an in depth Lantern guide?" When in reality I should be thinking "Who better to write a Lantern guide than somebody who's proficient with every deck in Modern?".
Looks at "A Guide To Every Deck In Modern" episode - sees it's Lantern Control, sees it's 20+ minutes... holy shit Also Moonlight Sonata is a goated music choice for the matchup section!
I'm surprised the list you shared doesn't run at least a 1-of The Underworld Cookbook. It works amazingly well with Ensnaring Bridge and pretty much automatically solves the Burn matchup
@Throngler Burn is a bad matchup for Lantern because of the redundancy of the cards, the low power of the creatures, and the fact that burn spells can ignore Bridge. Cookbook can make your hand count low enough to where Bridge stops burn's creatures before they can do any major damage, and by continually making food every turn, can negate all of burn's direct damage
Burn is a stonks matchup for Lantern, cookbook helps a lot (also makes chonky constructs), and if you play Shadowspear mainboard or sideboard, you just tutor it and swing with a single construct to tilt the game into your favor. Also, once you have cookbook and a few mill rocks, you can just focus on your opponent’s topdeck and discard your meh draws.
Something to note, you cannot respond to mana abilities with mill stones. Some mana rocks generate mana and draw a card at the same time. Others do not. I see this as only relevant to decks that use Chromatic Sphere. Chromatic Star's draw activates when it leaves the battlefield.
I’ve had the misfortune of playing against one of the best lantern wizards in the Greater Richmond area(that’d be Richmond Virginia+about a 30-40 mile radius around it). It was a long evening.
I asked a long time ago about lantern and while waiting sucked this video is amazing and the amount of work put into it, wow! I might just get back to playing lantern at my lgs since the meta is so small I can probably prepare for it. Thanks a lot for such great content!
Rest in peace my full foil lantern deck, the deck I have enjoyed the most playing. The rampant power creep and the never ending stream of artifact hate have made it imposible to play.
I love the new video. This one must have taken a ton of work! Have you considered dimir faeries for modern? I'd love to see a guide to that one! Anyways, love the vids!!
If I'm being quite honest, I don't really know the current stats of the deck overall. I may be biased since it's been my current modern deck for quite some time and has always done relatively well in local events, but on a larger scale, I'm not quite sure.
I used to play this after it dropped into the scene. My friends stopped playing with me after I picked it up. I was also very Lucky to pick it up when everything was still cheap
Interesting how many "old" decks you mentioned... I'm a bogles player and just came back to magic after a few years of not playing and I thought it was completely gone by now, since it was already not a top tier deck in my time... Does anypne know if it still sees play? Kinda interested, cause I'm not in the meta at all rn
"And that's a wrap! Every Modern guide is finished." meanwhile, I'm just piloting Temur Electrobalance, consistently winning vs Rhinos,Murktide,Creativity,Scales,Titan, and Yawg like: 🧐
How playable do you think this archetype is playable nowadays? I really wanna build it but everyone at my lgs says that it's unplayable. I just wanna win an fnm, nothing fancy :c, thank you very much for the video :)
@@roycevereen5369complexity is not a problem because it's exactly what I am looking for, I wanna play a deck that I can master and not get bored after a few games. Thanks for the help :)
@@KuzaFkto It's not... great, but it's playable. Expect it to be a serviceable fringe deck that can win you games vs less skilled players and non-T1 decks, basically. If you want complexity, Scales is probably the strongest of the triad mentioned in the video, but Lantern can function, and is relatively affordable by Modern standards.
Lantern is the most complex and difficult deck I've ever piloted by a mile. It would still be my favorite deck if the Mox Opal ban and Modern Horizons hadn't demolished it.
i play a mono blue list right now you give up tha hand control but got metallic rebuke and counterspell as replacement i play 3 surgical extractions mainboard with cards like fabricate i can find the needed pieces whir of invetion is also possible bur with my landbase not consistent castable otwara is an extra removal and i play 2 aether spellbomb with 3 emry and 4 mishras bauble because of being mono colored i can use lands like invertors fair and ghost quater to further control the game in my opinion its better placed right now than the abzan version because you get around much hate against it emry mainboard is a bomb if dropped turn 2 metallic rebuke also online on turn 2 (both turn one possible if double bauble) emry also helps otawara and is an extra card draw cause the main cards are all artefacts aether spellbomb is a poor excuse for a removal but surprisingly buys enough time against most decks und is super to constantly disrupt creature combos sideboard gives good oportunity for matchups like control and suspend invasive surgery and mystical dispute do the trick 2 brain stones are perfect agains kombo or tron narset can help through tough value matchups
As far as I'm aware, you shouldn't run counterspells (or any other situational spells) in Lantern because you always need to be able to be empty-handed for Ensnaring Bridge.
Micosynth gardens are stonks. They set mill locks faster and act as a backup of any going-to-be-removed artifact. The deck has legs, especially if you know when to go full constructs first and eventually hide behind bridge as a B plan.
You're honestly overhyping this deck. It's not really difficult more so than it is bad. I don't know which decks you've been playing for 12 years, but every meta has forced me to know my opponents' decks inside and out. Bad doesn't mean unviable and I appreciate the work that went into the video, but that doesn't change these facts.

The video must have been in production for quite a while when its still discussing the Yorion Elementals matchup

Just go with Azorius Control instead.

Such a thorough guide. Thank you so much - this helps not only for Lantern, but as a general guide to the Modern gameplan itself.
Really appreciate the breadth and depth! I found watching the video at 75% speed was useful for digesting the very through Modern Primer.
I'm surprised the list you shared doesn't run at least a 1-of The Underworld Cookbook. It works amazingly well with Ensnaring Bridge and pretty much automatically solves the Burn matchup
I can see that, but it’s hilarious to think that turning your cards into overcosted healing salves is actually a viable countermeasure to burn.
@@fransiscofranco641 its not a specifically a counter to burn its a saga target to get rid of a clunky hand with multiple lands or bridges for example

you give up tha hand control but got metallic rebuke and counterspell as replacement
i play 3 surgical extractions mainboard
with cards like fabricate i can find the needed pieces
whir of invetion is also possible bur with my landbase not consistent castable
otwara is an extra removal
and i play 2 aether spellbomb with 3 emry and 4 mishras bauble
because of being mono colored i can use lands like invertors fair and ghost quater to further control the game
in my opinion its better placed right now than the abzan version because you get around much hate against it
emry mainboard is a bomb if dropped turn 2
metallic rebuke also online on turn 2
(both turn one possible if double bauble)
emry also helps otawara and is an extra card draw cause the main cards are all artefacts
aether spellbomb is a poor excuse for a removal but surprisingly buys enough time against most decks und is super to constantly disrupt creature combos
sideboard gives good oportunity for matchups like control and suspend
invasive surgery and mystical dispute do the trick
