- I was pretty impressed with these new Road Worm Telecasters.(not the old ones from a few years ago) here I talk about what I needed to do to get it to feel and sound good.
For information about lessons via Skype contact me at timlerch.com/le...
1&11/16, probably. I was working in a music store when the original Fender Road Worn series came out. First thing I got my hands on, was a blonde, beat up Telecaster, which weighed about 10 ounces and sounded killer. Still wish to this day, that I had bought that rascal, but my wife was sick with cancer so I didn't have two nickels to rub together at that time. Been a player for 57 years. And from my experience, this is the best deal Fender has ... That fret dressing does make a BIG difference!! Nice playing. TCasters are so good for SO many kinds of music!! IF I ever get one of these, I will have it rewired to the James Burton wiring ... Try some Stringjoys. You will be GLAD you did!! Wound 3rd, too! Makes a difference for those sweet chords! Thanks for the talk!
Lovely. I've watched this video I don't know how many times and am currently looking for a Roadworn Tele like this. I wish they came up more in stores. MIght have to take a chance on Reverb.
Tim, it's really nice to have your insights on choosing an instrument. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Very informative. You have a brilliant disposition Tim, very easy to listen to.
I think Tim could talk about the instruction manual for my washer and i would find it i interesting
Ted Green wrote me a reply when I asked how to get a good sound out of tele for jazz , after telling me about strings, tunings, and pickups, he said he carves the back out and installs Lenny Breau tapes.
Hi Tim, how about some lessons on your "secret" setup, frets, nuts, saddles, etc.?
Check out his tuning video.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, Tim. Thank you!
Hey Tim! Thanks for this review. I'm a big fan. I have been through every version and brand of tele makers.. And based on specs thought this one might be the one. I absolutely love it. I couldn't justify the 3k plus for the nocaster at the moment and obviously American standards and AVRI just don't cut it. I was a fan of the Baja.. And have had Nash's. Bought one on reverb and it's a truly great guitar. You were spot on with your review. I would love to take some lessons from you as well. Thanks! Todd
2:18 This is why we should all learn to use the metric system.
Man, 12:46' and here's a man enjoying his own review, just great!!! This is what it should always be!! And it's probably the best review of this guitar for sure. Very honest and interesting. Really considering in have it!! Thank you!!
Excellent information. I truly appreciate you taking the time to help us all out. Happy New Year from Olympia, WA.
The 2008 - 2013 are known for having perfect chunky necks. I've had 2, and both played great. The one I currently have has a quarter sawn neck and a 7.2 Ib weight. I own some really good teles too, so I know what I'm talking about
Tim, wonderful information and playing. Your videos sure make a positive difference for us.
Thanks lots for posting.
Suena excelente la guitarra 👌. ¿Está con cuerdas rounwound cierto?.. excelente
Refreshing to hear a Telecaster being played pure, without reverb and compression bumped up. I have a 2013 Special Edition MIM BSB pretty much like that, with the flipped control panel, so that the pickup switch is mounted closest to the plug jack. No, it's not lacquer finish, probably Poly, but it is brass compensated saddles, with Twisted Teles, and the action is indeed high. Now if I could only play it as smooth and Jazzy as Timothy Lerch! Strings you like to play on that Tele? Flat Wounds, or ? Picked mine up for a song, think she's a keeper! GC sells them all day long, new, for about $700, and sometimes you find them on sale. Only scratches on mine are on the pick guard.
Great review! I had a Road Worn Stratocaster that also needed some setup work and a fret dressing, but it had a great resonance and sound..I'll have to try one of these Telecasters. Cheers.
I just bought a Baja classic player Tele. The reason why I bought it was, it was supposed to have a chunkier slight 'V' neck. Does not feel that thick to me. I'm gonna go measure it right now... The nut was a little high but after visit to my local guitar tech, it is so much nicer. The over all quality of this 800.00 guitar is very nice. 8 or 9 out of 10... Oh yea ,I love your videos thanks for all the great music..
thanks so much for this video Tim, I finally got one of these the other week and you're right about the neck, it's something special
Love that tune at the end. Very informative vid too. Thanks!
What a great considered overview of a guitar and its potential. Thank you for posting this and your other videos on the Fender Road Worn. I'm getting one for Christmas!
Thx Tim teles have their own sounds for sure
Your video convinced me to pick one of these up! And MAN I've been missing out for so long not having one of these.. AMAZING guitar! Thank you for this helpful video!
I recently inherited a Mexican Tele 5014--stock except for an upgrade three barrell Tele bridge--Calahan I think. It presently has 10--46 strings on it and think the nut is original. I am considering a Tusc or bone nut Would Lollars be really a necessary upgrade to the stock pickups.?.Thoughts--suggestions?
My New CD is now available got to www.timlerch.com to order.
Hey Tim, playing aside which is always really enjoyable - that was a fantastic, honest & informative review. Thanks for posting it!
Hello’Tim , one more question sorry ... do you know of this run of telecaster from 2013 to the Vintera have the same spec ? I have found a 2018 récently, but i can t try it before shopping
Hey Tim! I love the last 30 seconds of this video! I was wondering if you could do a quick lesson of it and/or some tablature on it? That would make my day! I love your jazzy playing! Thanks a bunch!
Any recommendations on players that play that type of playing?
Lovely demonstration! Thanks Tim!
The best guitar for the money, Fender has ever made. Even the first ones, despite the bad relicing. And a little work can fix that stuff. And Fender's marketing sucks.
Thanks Tim! I'm eyeballin' a few of these and I'm guessing for the price you can't really go wrong, yeah?
I bought one of these, and his video was very influential. Please, if you don't mind, could you she some light on your upper fret setup technique?
I believe it's called fall away. Dan Erlewine shows how in his fret work DVDs. www.stewmac.com/How-To/DVD/Fretting_DVDs/Dan_Erlewines_Fretting_Series.html
Cheers for the informative video Tim, how would these newer models compare to the first roadworn models? Anybody have direct experience with both?
Hey Tim :) Your videos are super helpful thank you. How do you prevent fretting out on a 7.25 radius neck? Thanks.
Thanks guys for your kind comments
Hi Timothy- Thanks for posting these great videos. In terms of the neck thickness for this model, is it "baseball bat" Thick, like the deep U shape of the 52 reissues? or is it more like a deep C?
That ending solo is reminiscent of Chet atkins and Leo kottke, and who else? It’s great. I would love to hear more of that kind of playing. Anybody have recommendations or suggestions for players that do that kind of music? Also if there are any of Tims videos with that type of playing?
how about lessons on harp harmonics? When i first heard him at Berklee music school (lenny breau) he was playing a Hagstrom12 string with 6 strings and sounded amazing! He started with Dont Think Twice its Alright by Dylan.
Have you ever tried a no neck strat Tim? I got my hands on one last year secondhand, it's incredible. Like you, I feel really at home on my nocaster and was overjoyed getting a strat with the same feel. Do you think these baseball bat necks have much of an impact on the tone?
I love tele!!
What a beautiful tone!
Congrat.
What amp are you using?
Tim, I got the 'Tele bug' and haven't had one for more years than I care to say. I got lucky while looking at some guitars at a local pawn to shop because some guy said to check out the MIM Classic Baja and the Road Worn. I demo'd the Baja against a new $2k '52 vintage and I thought the Baja was as good aside from slightly poorer setup. However, I can't find a Road Worn to try. My question: is the neck on the Road Worn about as fat as the Baja & '52 reissue? I like that baseball bat feel. On one hand, I kinda like the 'relic' thing, but on the other, I like the 4 way tonal possibilities of the Baja. Mostly I guess it comes down to the neck shape and of course, I can't find a Road Worn. Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
Have you tried the Godin Stadium HT? $750 and made in Canada. Godin has excellent quality and fantastic necks. Best Regards!
Thanks for posting this Tim! I just ordered mine.
I hear those are pretty good guitars for the money. I am going with a new classic player Baja tele. They are pretty good too.
Superb lil video. Look forward to watching more.
I have a Squire Classic Vibe tele I really enjoy.
Is this the the 50s Road Worn?, as the original had a with Seymour Duncan and Tex-Mex (in black or CAR).
THANKS, TIMOTHY!
Hey Tim. I'm looking at picking up a road worn Tele as a placeholder for the next few months while my Danocaster is being built. According to the specs online the older RWs had a U shape neck (which I really like) and, as far as I know, the newer ones have a C shape neck. So I'd assume the older ones would have fuller/fatter neck. What is it about the neck on the newer ones you like? I currently have a 69' Thinline RI but the thick poly on the neck is killing me. I normally would just sand the back of the neck but it's more the fingerboard that feels sticky. So I'm selling it to pick up a road worn with the better/lighter finish. How is the fingerboard on the newer ones? Sticky or smooth?
Thanks.
Gary.
This one has a better neck than the old ones and its smooth and feels very good.
Thanks for this report Tim, very helpful...
Can you please tell us what action and neck relief you prefere?
Love your videos! Great knowledge and experience to go with the great playing.
Hye Tim , would you say that 8 pounds for this kind of model is on the light side , not to heavy ? Is the weight of your nocaster and roadworn affect the sound , the général tone ? Thanks and thank you for this good review
Nothing over 8 lbs for me. I prefer it when they are just a few ounces above 7.
@@TimLerchGuitar thank you Tim
@@TimLerchGuitar finaly, before finding the good road worn at good price and weight, for waiting , i just took a vintera 50 at very low price second hand . Well, best telecaster i have buy at the moment , better that av52, american pro 2, paisley and highway one . For less 500 dollars . Light , good set up , big neck , brass sadle, good Electronic and pickups ...
Beautiful tones - what amp are you playing through there?
I just bought one of these...ive had the Real ones thru the yrs...this one comes very close to the original '52 tele....
Greetings from Utah. What a good video!
Hi Tim, sorry if you’ve already answered this, but what year is that great sounding Tele? Thanks!
First of all, many thanks for this and your other videos. Do you ever use flat wound strings on your tele's?
Amazing player teacher here... Thanks for posting
Hi Tim after watching this for a gazillion times, I finally got a 2018 Road worn 50s tele and also some Glendale brass compensated saddles and the CC Lollar neck and BS Lollar for the bridge. My question if you do not mind is around the pickguard. Did you have to modify it or did you also purchase it from Lollar? Any information will be much appreciated.
I had my luthier cut it for me. But Lollar has a template that you can use if you have the tools/skills to do the cutting
@@TimLerchGuitar awesome! The luthier I go to is awesome and they are a small Mom and Pop guitar store that have been here for years real nice family. I have not taken it to him yet but when I do I'll let him know I can get a template from Lollar if he is concerned to just go at it. Thank you so much Tim as always! Cheers!
Hi Tim, great review. I appreciate how you talk about the workmanship of the guitar. I looked up this new Road Worn model on the Fender site. They describe the neck as a "C", but that's not very specific, since there are several types of C neck. Is this a "60's C" or a modern, flat-oval C? (I don't think it's the latter, since you suggest this is thicker than a skinny Fender neck).
Is it a pain in the neck to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod?
Great review, your playing is awesome, I want to pick up a recent Road Worn after seeing this :)
what kind of amp do u use..?
Hi Tim, you probably mentioned about the pickup on the video and i prob missed that, sorry if i ask what kind pickup you use on this tele?, Thank you and great video as always.
Hi Tim, seems you prefer maple fingerboard on all of your Teles? Why not rosewood?
+Samuel Liu I like one piece maple because it feels great sounds great and has the right flexibility for me to do my neck wiggle vibrato.
Great tips here. Thank you Tim!
Hey Tim, What's that pleasant little tune you were playing at the end there? I'd really like to learn it (Great video btw!)
Hi Tim, What do you think of the thinline F hole tele's ?
One of the best tele demos I’ve seen...I don’t own one but I’ve played a couple with the chunky necks..love those..i just got a nash t52 on reverb..do you own one of those?
ed cherry thanks Ed, I saw your recent post with your Nash and it sounded great and of course your playing is fantastic. I used to have a Nash but a student was looking for a good tele so I passed it on to him.. I still have this road worn fender and I’m still liking it very much.
That wasn't a nash i was playing in the video...
Pablo Valle tele
@@edcherry9282 Oh, that one sounded good. I hear that Pablo Valle is a great luthier.
Superb video as usual, thank you sir. I'm a tele player as well (4th on the build) - did you ever try Baja Tele? I live in Spain & somehow never got to try one.
They'd appear on ebay, but reviews are rarely what I'd like to hear tested. Yours are always about almost "acoustic" side of electrics, depth search, which is what I'm about & understand... Any help?...
I have this guitar, it feels and looks very nice. Also I like that it's really light. But I don't really like the pickup sound, way to thin and harsh for my taste...my MJT/Hosco Partscaster has the cheap Fender Yosemite PUs at the moment, they sound like a great tele, but much more balanced and sweeter imo
These new Road Worns really are great guitars! Excellent review and playing. What's that song at the end? That was some of the most beautiful playing I've ever heard. Very nice, Tim! :)
I agree. Also, I’m curious if anyone knows that style or playing name? That specific type of playing. Reminds me of Chet atkins but it’s more mellow and the Melodie’s really hit home
cool axe, nice clip. I dont know if Id get along with a road worn or american standard, maybe I gotta get one of each. ;o) interesting
i got one!
What year was this roadworn tele manufactured? thanks
I think he said 2013 or similar.
Great video. Thanks for this.
Don't own a tele yet. What do you think of the baja tele or american standard tele with the belly cut? Those are the two i'm considering. Different animals i know. And a much fatter neck on the baja.
I had a Baja Tele previous to the Road Worn. The nice thing about the Baja is the pickup sound options. It's not a bad guitar. For the flexibility, the Baja would be the better choice but if you want to spend a little more, Road Worn is awesome.
Thanks! Yeah, the roadworn was gonna be my second choice!! Lol
Very interesting video.
It is called the Classic series either 50’s Tele or 60’s Tele
Just for the record, .91 is .09 less than 1 inch. Are you talking about .91 mm?
No I'm talking inches.
VERY INTERESTING ... THANK YOU!
AAAAANNNND subscribed!!! Great channel!!
try farida guitar,top cost performance
always buy a guitar working out how much a good setup will cost you, including fender and gibson. just buy a decent copy.
I tried them when they first came out as well. Not impressed... all the other specs are spot on but the road worn isnt necessary. Also set up like crap (one strat still had metal filings stuck to the pickup). That said. I think all these guitars need to be very good guitars is A)a proper set up and B) someone to play the snot out of them for about a year so they actually feel somewhat roadworn.
That was helpful. Thx
igual yo tengo esa misma guitarra Tim
Nice voice. I feel asleep.
Fender telecaster🎉 .😯 🎼🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
They are Tex Mex pickups and they still are $799.00 .
David trueslayor great guitar and great Pickups
Sounds very warm and woody.. Almost simi-hollow...
you are a great player you deserve a better made guitar!
I am loathe to say the newer Fender company is too relaxed with quality control! I have played their guitars (teles) from the cheapest to some at almost $2500, and the played very poorly - funky frets, lousy nuts, etc ..... they just seem to crank them out too fast. A little better QC would go a long, long way!!
This is a bit off tangent to your post, but as an alternative, has anyone had experience with a G&L ASAT, from the early 80's? Would appreciate any comments. Thanks.
7:10
Sell it to me please
Why don't the various manufacturers shield their guitars prior to making it available to the customers ? !!!
Some folks like the original 50's style "hum" of an unshielded pickup, or guitar.
2014---LOL
complete avg guitar its ok. You cant bend strings on em....7.25 radius...nut issues ....bridge etc do not pay more then 400 for this
It always gets me when american or british people try to establish "precise measurements" by using fractions, like 17/39 of an inch... I mean, come on! Convert to the metric system already!
Sounds your guitar is not grounded correctly. It's grounding to your hand touchin it. Not good my friend!
around 5:00 i address that issue, thank you for your kind comment.
