  • Hackles & Wings Fly Tying videos! Today we're going to tie a Black Spider. One of my favourite patterns that has given me a lot of great fishing days. Fish it dry or wet, both work extremely well.

Simply fantastic...its a modern spider. The palette in fly tying materials has increased considerably over the years. If such materials were available back in the day they would have been deployed.

Hi Simon, that's one hairy spider, I love it! I like the winding hackle through the thorax like you did. Better represents legs and makes it durable as you said. I did that from an article I read when I started tying and learning different techniques. Mine were tied on much bigger hooks, but you method reduces bulk, better suited for smaller hooks. Great story, my biggest hooked brown came on a size 12 partridge & orange with a hare's ear thorax. Also tyed on a dry fly hook. I was casting up & across so I'd get a longer drift. When the line was down stream I'd let it hang, slowly raise it until the rod loaded then fling it upstream. On my 3rd cast my rod loaded but the line didn't budge. Then the reel started screaming and that fish made 3 down stream runs. I called to my wife to try and net it. When she did it surged once more and broke off. It had to be over 15 inches and fat! So it pays to fish "out of the box" as they say. You lucky dog! Great find on that Metz neck. I know there hen runs bigger than whiting hen necks. Did they sell it like that? I've seen Metz dry necks sold in packs of 3 different colors, all 1/3rd pieces, sold in 3 sizes. Thanks Simon, very happy I subscribed to your channel.

Thank you Joe! I really like this technique, I use it both for dry and wet flies, it makes it so much more durable and that's one of my main criteria in a fly. Partridge & orange is a true classic and that's a really nice story, proves that the technique works. Next time it will maybe let itself be landed. The metz neck I got was a normal sized soft hackle and this neck that I showed in the video just came along in the same package. They are quite old I think, at least 15 years. The small neck that came with is great for small nymphs and wetflies. As you said, had some luck there. Thanks a lot for subscribing, hope you will enjoy the content to come.

Resembles a flymph, not a North Country Spider.....but still nice.

It s not the black spider as far as i know. A hackled black wet fly, but bot a spider on tge north country style.
No silk, no wax, no straight eye hook, no starling feather...definitely not a spider.

That's right it is not Stewart's Black Spider. But the style englobes a lot more patterns than that
