He is a hero of this Nation, that confession was forced by the Pakistan's military who used him as a scapegoat to save their own skin, dictator Musharraf in fact wanted to hand him over to US but his own appointed prime Minister Mir zafarullah Khan jamali resisted and Musharraf deposed him from the office, later US accepted that scripted apology thus no extradition happened. He was house arrested and was ordered not to talk about nuclear anymore.

Iraq is an example as to why even the slight hint you have nuclear energy capability is enough to paint you a target by others. Pakistan's economy's been weak and this was one of the few chips we could put forward for bringing in trading or technology deals. But one cant deny that he gave his people the bomb they were desperate to have at that time. Not to mention they maintain nuclear power plants. So while what you're saying would have been correct for that time period by 2024 they would have nuclear arms. They would never have even CARED about joining NATO funnily enough. Maybe the EU for benefits but what would Russia have done then?

There is only one country that has given up its nuclear weapons .. South Africa .. Ukraine, Kazakstan etc merely had weapons that it inherited from the Soviet Union. There is a BIG difference.. if South Africa ever REALLY had to it can make a nuclear weapon tomorrow .. the weapons grade uranium is sitting in Pelindaba to this day .. the bomb components and plans are all there and even if outdated can be re- assembled . If South Africa were in an invasion situation like Ukraine trust me they would have a bomb ready to go … If you logically think about it once a country has made a nuclear weapon .. as long as it has the weapons grade uranium it can make one again it can’t “ unlearn” what it has already learned!!

And even upon breaching Ukrainian bases within Crimea, they were met with surrenders. Crimea was a completely different situation than what is currently happening. But western media doesn’t bring it up because it makes Russia look less bad. It is quite possible Putin really believed it would be as easy as Crimea. People bring up Crimea and the lack of response all the time but lack knowledge beyond what they have learnt about Crimea since the 22 invasion

Well, taking a step back it's quite funny because as a westerner, if I wanted to be neutral try just a little bit, the way I could see this story by switching to a non western perspective is a bit different compared to the narrative we got here; Since Truman walked away scott free after nuking a quarter million civilians, in comparison it would have been unfair for Khan, a mere scientist and certainly no decision maker, to be punished more for having done less - since no nuclear weapon he helped build have ever been used to kill innocent people. Do weapon manufacturers get tried and punished everytime one of their weapons is used to commit a crime? (imo they should btw, it would solve quite a lot of problems).
In that regard, Openheimer and Einstein have more blood on their hands than this fellow scientist by that reasoning.
Yes, the guy changed the world's balance of power, proping up his country and friends while making a fortune.

If you're a country with oil, like Iraq, Iran, Libya, or you have a rather powerful enemy on your border, like N.Korea. Then It's easy to see the appeal of having nukes. As it stands, no Nuclear armed nation has been invaded by the US. Meanwhile, a great many non-armed nations certainly have.
Ukraine had nukes, gave them up with assurances of defence from other nations. And yet that hasn't materialised. Thousands of square km of Ukrainian land is currently under military occupation from a Russian invasion, an invasion that certainly wouldn't happen if it kept its nukes.

    • @Hoglock

It’s hard to know, tempting to say
      Ukrainian had old soviet nukes
They would’ve been the weakest nuclear power in the world while angering every other nuclear power no one wanted them to have nukes and it would’ve been a nuclear threat to Russia
Russia who could’ve quickly nuclear striked Ukraine before they managed to get them set up to strike Russia and before Ukrainian nuclear defence systems were set up
No I think putin would’ve easily quickly obliterated Ukraine had they kept their nukes.

Aye, the arms race in South Asia was kicked off by the events around the liberation of Bangladesh.
East Pakistan wanted to be separated from Pakistan, to form Bangladesh, and the Pakistani government wasn't having it.
According to Arthur Blood, a consular officer with the American govt, the government had started an awful genocidal program called OP Searchlight. However, the US wanted to help out the Pakistani government, as Pak was helping the Nixon administration form relations with China. So the US, UK, and Australian navies decided to steam a task force towards India. The task force was obviously nuclear armed. Thankfully the Soviets stepped in to backup India, the war ended soon, with Bangladesh becoming free and independent.
Being threatened with nukes kinda made India desire nukes, and since India had nukes, Pak wanted some too.
Neither country has ever locked for nerds.

Also , Osama Bin laden was living right near the military academy in pakistan so it is obvious your state hosted global islamic terror. Kept supporting terrorism in the kashmir valley , open involvement in 2008 mumbai terror attacks.
Am not a fan of america either (americans supported you folks in 1971 or else west pakistan would have ended up annexed as a part of india as it always was) , but then smuggling nuclear weapons that too to terrorists is not a matter of pride.

For that, he needed to go up against western hegemony.
He is a hero. And if he is considered a villian, so should be every US president.
He was not held back by a narrow mindset of religious sect (worked with Iran) or race (N Korea), unlike the west, which tries to downplay his motivations to money, since they themselves work only for that, and see the rest of the world through race.

AQ khan is married to a Dutch lady, have no children and lived in a very humble house. Which will be transferred to a local charity .
This man dedicated his life to his country, unfortunately they made him an escape goat, by the Pakistani army chief and dictator Parwaiz Mushraf.

Yeah, I see lots of commentators echoing this, but it’s really hard to fault Pakistan (or Iran, or North Korea) for wanting a nuke. This debacle is on the US - if we were serious about non-proliferation, we should have made sure India didn’t get one. And we should have made the calculus better for other states. The US maintaining their gargantuan nuclear arsenal while not wanting anyone else to have one seems like an obvious problem. I’m not saying there any good answers here, but certainly the strategy we’ve been pursuing with regards to nukes has been one of the bad ones.

    • @salted_lizard

One of the hard things about that is Russia’s arsenal is even bigger. The US will never get rid of the bulk of their arsenal, so long as Russia has 5,000+ nukes. And Russia would never give up an edge like that on the US and western powers. It’s a stalemate, but at a cost to every nation without nukes. The only way to fix it would be good faith talks about non-proliferation between all nuclear powers, but that won’t happen anytime soon.
