I really want to see a Wing in the X32 Rack format. That would be an absolutely killer little box.
It would be great to see one the size of a QL1- but a rack version would be really nice too.
I personally love the X Air series from Behringer! I used to own an X18, and the versatility of the different settings they can be used in is simply fantastic. Want to use it as a 16-pre audio interface for studio tracking (even with the ability to print the internal processing if you desire, treating it more like a traditional studio console with outboard gear)? Sure! Want to have a portable console for small-to-medium gigs that even allows for a separate monitor engineer/monitors controlled by musicians on additional tablets? Sure! Want to run a livestream and have total control of all your sources, routing and processing outside of software like OBS? Sure!
In my opinion, this format of small digital mixer, when executed well like the X32 rack or X Air series, is just a goldmine of a versatile tool.
Side note, I heavily regret selling my X18... they shot up in value since I had mine, but moreover I've had countless times where I wish I still had it lol
You're completely right, in the past couple years the needs in the industry have changed a lot. I personally own three desks, an XR18, X32 rack and an SQ5. In their price ranges I can't find anything that will sound and do the job better. Around 500 the king is the XR18, around 1000 it's the X32rack and in the 1000-5000 mark it's the SQ5. After the SQ you might just as well get a dLive. Still, today, the desk I use the most often is my xr18. This is because I often just need a couple inputs or it's a small function event and more than 16 cahnnels and 6 mono mixes is really not needed. For anything bigger though I tend to bring out my sq5, and the x32 has quickly become my backup solution for when I get a double booking on medium shows where 24 channels (I have an 8 channel SD8) is enough.
It's been a constantly moving target for sure. It sounds like you have a lot of the bases covered with that mix of consoles though. Being flexible is everything right now it seems.
Where are you finding an x32r for $100?

I bought an X32 compact in 2016 and have only used it on a handful of gigs. Bought an X32 rack fairly shortly after the X32 compact and for the direction I ended up going with gigs, the X32 rack was perfect. Still using it to this day- perfect for small wedding band/function band gigs, and able to do live multitrack recordings for the bands too! Using my Yamaha QL1 for bigger gigs, but I still don't look down on the X32 rack as a toy, I've never had any issues with it and perfectly suits some of my styles of gigs with stuff like inadequate FOH mix position (so the X32 rack can just sit in the corner of the stage while I walk around with my iPad).

I am so deep in the x32 eco-system its silly. And I probably can't even pull myself out yet without an intense investment of capital I just don't have. Right now I own a Wing, 2 full size x32, 1 x32 rack, an x32 producer, 2x s16's, 1 dl32, 1 dl16, and two x-airs.
The eventual goal is to graduate up to the yamaha CL series. But, I just can't justify the cost, yet.
We use X32 rack version for outside broadcasting rig at radio station I’m working for. It’s controlled by X-TOUCH COMPACT MIDI controller, and it perfect mimics professional broadcasting consoles at the smallest possible size. We fitted it even into living rooms of our listeners during special morning show, we broadcasted from their houses. And when we wanted to have ON AIR red lamp, we did it very easy by using custom MIDI to GPIO module, even with CR MONITORS muting, very close setup to our on-site studio..
The X-touch controllers seem to be a great way to go with this... might have to grab a small one for the desktop to try. That's great you were able to pull together an on-air light without spending a fortune too, those kinda things add up fast when you're looking at ready made solutions. Thanks for the great info!
I was under the impression that only the full X-Touch would support the X32 because that one has a ethernet port for supporting the X32. Would be great if I am wrong. Would a X-Touch One work as well?

X/M32 line is so affordable & reliable, with plenty of options for I/O with the various expansion cards plus AES50, tons of community support, and you'll see it in so many local venues.... it's kind of a no-brainer for me. I take an X32 Rack to every gig with my band as a monitor console (hooked up to another few U worth of IEM transmitters and an analog XLR split, like you mentioned). The Mixing Station app is great for custom control layouts by the technical and less-technical members of the band. So many venues have X/M32s for FOH that we will often take an AES50 digital split into ours. Stereo IEMs for the band eat up a lot of the buses though, so we have a Waves LV1 rig that we use when providing FOH as well. The X32 Rack still functions as the I/O, but with a SoundGrid expansion card to move audio in/out of LV1. With 32 channels and almost a decade later, this thing has stood up well.
@@DcSoundOp Yeah. It's pretty great. I'd love to get my hands on the Hear bridge since I have a ton of Dante stuff as well.

I love the X Air by Behringer. The one you pointed out to me. Lol. I don't know what I'm doing, hardly at all, and yet within maybe 15 minutes I was up and running. Linking channels together. Loading stock EQs in. I'm really happy about it.
Im glad it worked out so well. Definitely want to hear that Kit when you get thing dialed in & have a chance to record something.

I sent my Rack to Black Lion a few years ago and they did an analog stage upgrade on it. Mine was the prototype for the mod that they offer now. I need to try and do a comparison between my rack, an unmodified unit and my M32r.

Pretty deep into the Berry/Midas eco system ATM...2 x X32 racks, M32R , X18, great affordable magic boxes that all sound pretty decent. What i would love to see is a 2022 version of a X32/M32/Wing rack with upgraded AD/DA ,Mic pre's, FX , bla bla bla. Berry flawed the industry in 2012 with the X32 so 10 years on it would be very cool if they did it again...xox....
Lot of folks asking for a rack version of the Wing & I'm not mad about it at all. Who knows what will happen with consoles in the next year or two though with all of the chip shortages... hanging onto older gear might be our only choice for a while.
I just got the X32 Rack in my door today. I have used the X/M32 platforms the most out of all consoles.... I enjoy using them immensely...

Using the Flow 8 when working from home, an x32 rack for inears on the road and for corporate shows we use the XR16. Behringer seem to have every price point covered...
@@DcSoundOp It's been good so far, suits my needs well. I wish there was a Mac OS companion app though.. getting the phone out for granular control get's annoying after a while
5 Member cover band. Went from an XR18 to a Soundcraft UI24r to a Presonus 24r.
Presonus blows the others away for $1300 delivered from Thomson.
17 inputs used, and duplicated all instruments and vocals (drums are not duplicated). Digitally split within the mixer for separate FOH and IEM needs. Just fantastic, along with the eq and compressor plugins included.
I haven't used the Qu-SB specifically but I've used a Qu-16/24 extensively for shows/conferences where the board was in a terrible position, so I was almost exclusively using the iPad app to run it, and I can tell you it is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the X32 apps in terms of design. It feels like the Allen & Heath apps were designed by audio engineers, and the X32 app was designed by a software engineer if that makes sense. Just in terms of being able to get around the app quickly and find the parameters I need to change, my preference is strongly in favor of the Qu, though I did wish it racked a little more cleanly. Having the built in USB and dSnake means I'm covered for all the networking/multitracking I need for 80% of my gigs.
@@DcSoundOp Just for the sake of reference, download the Qu iPad app and check out the demo mode so you can see what I'm talking about. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy to navigate it is.

I use the A&H Qu-SB. I love the workflow of the Allen & Heath app much better than the x32. The Qu-SB can also be expanded to 32 inputs via digital cat5 stagebox. I still want to buy an SQ-5 though for bigger shows where hands on approach is nice to have in conjunction with the app. but for 90% of my shows, the Qu-SB is perfect. I wonder when these companies will start making more control surfaces that are compatible with the iOS devices. like a MIDI motorized fader console with programmable macros that you connect directly to an iPad. Something that syncs with the app and allows for the best of both worlds. It would be awesome.
My only problem with A&H Qu series is that their apps only work with iOS.
Are you able to hardwire an iPad or laptop to the QuSB. Feel like I haven’t seen that mentioned. Cheers
@@manuelquintana1008 Absolutley. You can assign the laptop or iPad to any stereo input pair via USB cable. You can also use the qu-sb as an audio interface. You can always record multitrack directly to a hard drive as well from the separate qu-drive USB port. Cheers!

The X18 does everything I ever need to do at the handful of sound gigs I do. Parallel eq and compression, multi band compression on the main buss and multi track recording all in a unit that is around $500, and it sounds really good. That's still hard to beat. I would own an X32 if I ever needed one...

@@hollywoodthedj1673 I believe it is the X18. It also has 1/4" jacks for the aux sends instead of XLR jacks.
@@frontprochproduction ok cool I’m looking to learn and iPad based digital mixer I want to buy which ever one is the easiest to learn how to use I’m just doing basic front of house sound for other djs at parties and venues no bands I haven’t learned how to do bands yet that’s a whole other monster and learning curve I’m not ready for that lol
@@hollywoodthedj1673 they are basically the same, the X18 and the XR18, just configured a little differently. The secret to trouble free operation is to use an external Wi-Fi router, and set that unit up as a hidden wifi network. That way only your iPad will have access to it. No one's phone will be able to see the network so your iPad won't get booted off when you are trying to run sound. That's the best tip I can give you, the rest you will just have to learn as you go... 😎
I work for organizations that collectively own the Avantis, Qu32, Midas M32R, and Roland M480. However, because high channel count is less important on smaller gigs, movies, and corporate events and I always ended up using my personal MG412cx which lacks compression, on stereo outs, graphic EQ, and only 1 true aux send. Which is why I recently purchased a used Mackie DL1608 for cheap. So far it's been great allowing me to mix anywhere in the room, and has what the Yamaha lacked and more. My only complaint is that you can only record the stereo bus to the iPad, it also lacks an oscillator, both of which are features on the DL16S.
How do you like working on the Avantis? I've heard great things but have only been around one myself at trade shows.
@@DcSoundOp There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you wrap your head around the fact that anything is customizable it's a matter of setting it up to suit your needs. Also it should be mentioned that you can't use the qu32 as a monitor mixer in conjunction with the Avantis and gx4816, at least not quickly and easily while training 30+ college kids on everything else involved in live music production. So instead we had to use an old copper split which taught a whole new set of lessons on patching to avoid using dead channels.
Man I’m torn. Had a ui24r that I loved and traded it it for a tascam model 24. Not a bad trade, but different strokes for different needs. Both units sound fantastic. Tascam a bit bolder and punchier, soundcraft pristine with integrity and clarity. To my ears anyhow… really thinking about selling the tascam to buy an x32 rack. I really doubt it will sound as good, but I’m so attracted to the p16. I feel like every gig I’m the sound guy for the whole band and I hate it. P16 system would be a perfect solution….
While I am a die-hard Yamaha fan, I do love my Ui24R for quick, small gigs. I've never been a big fan of the workflow on the full-size M32/X32 and losing the physical faders and knobs makes it that much harder to deal with. Soundcraft (or is it really SM Pro) made great remote-control software.
Having used the rack for a while now, I think my feelings towards using a full sized X32 would be different from when they've popped up unexpectedly on shows where a QL or CL would have usually been requested. I've gotta try the Ui24, the 12 had so much potential, but they kinda hung it out to dry on updates and bug fixes... and that one was absolutely an SM Pro product dressed up in new paint.
@@DcSoundOp How much of a culture shock was it to expect a Yamaha CL/QL and be greet with an M32/X32 instead? Do they get respect from those forced to run them? Since my best mixer is a TF5 I feel like I’d be laughed out of the facility if I arrived with it.
@@matthew.datcher I don't generally take work with people I don't trust, which makes life much easier. So if the company sends an x32 compact for a corporate, I trust they know it can handle the job they sold to their clients, so I get on with my end of it.
I had a touring guy once just verbally crap all over an 01v96 that was provided for a press conference during soundcheck. He just couldn't handle it for a one song acoustic solo performance for this charity.
He thought he had some real weight to throw around, but ended up looking pretty incompetent when the client asked him (in front of his artist) to explain in terms everyone could understand why HE couldn't make it work for one song.
If your TF5 can handle the gig's routing needs well enough & we're all getting paid, you would never hear me complain.
I loved my Ui24r, very tidy software controls, godd features and sound quality, but yes bugs, lack of support and now reliability, it often shuts down such that I can't use it any more
@@danewallace9196 … wow I’ve heard a few people say that it shuts down or reboots sometimes that’s not good I was going to look into that mixer but maybe not now I’ve never used an iPad base mixer before I just want one that’s reliable & simple to use I don’t run bands but I would like to learn in the near future all I do is provide sound for other djs at parties & weddings just mains subs & mics that’s it!

Hey @sundamusik - I remember selling the mx8000 when they were new at the shop I worked at in the late 90's - they were a LOT of console for the money & I remember them selling pretty well for small studios. I'm mixing broadcast for a church completely in the box on Reaper via DVS. I can't justify the $10k or more of a mixer with more than 48 inputs, Dynamic EQ ( I need at least 52) and flexible bussing options when I can get away with running the whole show on a 2018 Macbook Pro. You might think Latency is an issue but video world has 118ms of delay, so I can really get away with murder as far as buffer sizes are concerned. I do run the mix through an X32 Compact that has copies of all the most important inputs on the desk itself so I can completely bypass Reaper if it fails, so I have redundancy in that sense.
That’s a solid sounding setup, what are you using for Dante i/O besides (I’m assuming) a card in the X32? Thanks for the message!
@@DcSoundOp The inputs come from a Midas Pro 2 at FOH converted from AES50, 3 Axient A4D recievers, and a bunch of computers running DVS. I'm stuck with the X32 at broadcast so I end up mixing the band on Reaper and then handling spoken word and playback on the X32.
Eventually I'd like to run LTC Timecode so I can more easily automate things and avoid extra stress on the computer from recalling snapshots via ReaPack plugins.
I went M32c and laptop. Even with the X32 i would still use the M32 edit via laptop for routing and set up rather than fiddle with all the psychical controls. Once the X32 is set up for IEM there really is no need for adjustment though. Also the M32c only uses up 1U of rack space.
That's a nice setup with the M32c, the smaller size is really attractive compared to the X32R. Which stage boxes are you using?
@@DcSoundOp I’ve got two DL16’s and a DL32. They are the Midas boxes. I also just switched my usb expansion cards on the M32C’s over to the Dante cards. Routing between two M32C’s and a computer is super easy now. Dante opens up some awesome routing options.
Can you do a review on the soundcraft UI24R. Or if you just have any information that you know about it's reliability or anything else you could pass along to me I would really appreciate it.
I like the Soundcraft ui24r, I’ve had one for a few years but I haven’t used it for a while. I prefer the Presonus 32 nowadays, I like the physical faders. Mixing on an iPad is not for me.
I’m trying to learn and get into this iPad mixing stuff but I’m like you I rather have physical faders & knobs to twist but I’m going to give it a try
@@hollywoodthedj1673 it good in a small venue. You can move around the room and make adjustments but I just find them a bit slow when you need to adjust something quickly.
@@officialWWM I feel you on that right now I use my Yamaha MG12 mixing board with effects when I’m running my sound and that has been good enough for me right now I love actually having faders to physically slide up and down lol I would love to get something slightly bigger in the near future it would be cool to have an actual mixing board that you could also hook an iPad up as well to run out in front and do quick fixes but fuck it I’ll just keep running back and fourth to tweak little things I hear lol
@@hollywoodthedj1673 yep, that’s why I love the Studiolive mixers. I set the mixer up at the side of the stage for smaller gigs and on the larger ones, I still set it up there but use it for mixing the monitors while someone else mixes front of house from an iPad. It’s a very versatile setup.
X32 rack as home studio interface - XR16 or XR18 for live/mobile gigs. Yet to find the functionality and ease of use offered in any other product in the price range.
The control software is super handy when you're using it as an interface - I keep it on a second screen desktop all the time & it has been surprisingly useful.
@@DcSoundOp X-Edit is very handy indeed. I find the hardware interface overly complicated for routing. I use Mixing Station XM32 for mobile (tablets) though rather than the Behringer issued apps. Highly configurable and customizable layouts and functionality.

I've seen WAAAY too many things go wrong with tablet mixing to trust it without a physical control surface for backup. However I recently found out about ethernet-to-lightning adapters. I ordered one. Might work
I feel the same way about anything wireless. Unless it's absolutely necessary to be wireless, it's always better to run a cable. Doesn't matter if it's and iPad or Laptop or a microphone, wire that thing in if you can!
For what it's worth I've been using an M18 with an outboard router and a Samsung tablet for 2 years and never skipped a beat. M18, EAW RS123 FOH, RCH HD10 monitors... Tiny power house live sound rig with studio quality sound. Love it!
Zoom L20-R for band rehearsal/future gigs
Ui24 - no contest. I hate the X Air app, which is a bummer because the XR18 has loads of nice features. Ui24 has THE BEST workflow and "app" (there is no app, you can run Ui on anything with a HTML5 browser), it has great processing and you can cascade two of those and do even large festivals. And it has the best sounding preamps in it's class (but quite noisy compared to the XR18)
I did like that browser based interface on the Ui series - very cool approach to accessing the mixer.
Did yours cut off & reboot from time to time like others have stated?
While I don't have the X32 Rack, I have the Core and the Compact for larger gigs and a XR12 racked with our broadcast rig. All great for the price and cover a wide range of jobs.
@@DcSoundOp The Core with a Dante card in it has come in useful on quite a few jobs for record splits and other last-minute requests. It's a shame they stopped making it, though there is a the M32C if needed.
What about the Zoom L20 rack?
I'm circling back around the X32 Rack... Considering... not sure as pricing seems to be raised.

I guess as far as price range goes, its would be at the higher end of the stuff listed in the video - but at least it has a better workflow than the the X32, and a way better companion app on the iPad.
Absolutely, those might be the closest to the X32R functionalities feature for feature. They are pushing closer toward $2k though & don't include any audio networking at that price. If they re-released that with even a single Dante port on-board, they'd probably have a good seller on their hands if they kept it under $2k. Though... they are back-ordered right now also it seems.
I love my TF Rack. And, I use to just like others use the x32 Rack: mixing monitors when another engineer isn't available or as my primary mixer for smaller gigs. But, I also realize that it's outside of Steve's price range for this video especially when it's fitted with the NY64-D card. Although, I will agree about the workflow, but I don't know if it's because I've been using Yamaha so much more than Behringer/Midas over the last decade.
Can a Yamaha sb168 stagebox work a X 32 mixer and S32 via Dante?
The sb168 is an ethersound box, so you could make audio pass with a bridge from someone like Auvitran, but it wouldn’t be cheap and then controlling the head amps is another hurdle you’ll need to use their software for. Could be done presumably, not sure if anyone tried with the specific boxes you mention.
