I got robbed on a military base. This may not be Vegas related, but it could easily happen in Vegas. This relates to #4. I was returning to my barracks and I was well within the gates, however I still had a long walk across the base to my barracks. At some point, I came across a crowd that had gathered in a parking lot. I walked into the lot to see what was going on and two guys were getting into a fight. I didn't know them, but... hey, free entertainment, right? Everyone stood around watching them yell at each either, expecting swings to happen at any moment. Just when it seemed like they were finally going to have at it, two "friends" pulled them apart. Disappointed, the crowd dispersed. Very anticlimatic... I walked into my barracks and was ready to turn in for the night. I attempted to pull out my wallet to show my I.D. and my wallet was gone. I didn't lose it out in town. I just had it getting onto base. I lost it somewhere between the gate and my barracks, which made me realize the whole fight scene was staged. While a crowd was gathered to watch a potential fight, a third person went around the edge o the crowd to pick pockets. I tell you this story because I can easily see this very same scenario playing out anywhere around The Strip as well.

Don’t forget having your drink spiked at Fremont! This falls in line with drinking too much alone. And if seen alone, your seen as a target. So a little spike in your drink is all it takes.

From a local that's been living here in Vegas for about 6 years now if your at the bar in the strip never tell the bartender your not from here and in vacation because they can and most likely will charge you a little bit extra for the drink if they think they can get away with it. For example when my cousin first found out i was living here in Vegas he decided to come stay with me for about a week and we went to the strip and while he went to use the restroom i bought myself a beer and it was about $5 and when he came back he went and bought the same beer and they tried changing him $13 just because they knew he was a tourists and not a local like me so i had to intervene and make them charge him the same amount that they charged me

We got robbed at a club so this would fall under #4. We were at Jewel nightclub at Aria on a packed dance floor - where everyone is shoving to get by... Well, one of those times we were pushed turned out to be a distraction. A thief got into Maddie's latched purse and stole her phone while she was literally holding the purse.

How not to get robbed in vegas:
    1. Keep your wallet/phone etc valuables in your front pockets
    2. Don't enter the wrong neighbourhoods
    3. Don't make it shown you're a tourist
    4. Be more mindful in crowds
    5. Ignore people trying to sell you stuff on the streets
    6. Don't get drunk (alone)

I have flight benefits and so have been checking out Las Vegas and I'm telling you, even in the middle of the day, I get nervous with some of these "characters" that hangout in corners, bus stops and everywhere else, where they just look like "squirrels trying to get a nut"....lol!
So, it does help to have a little bit of "street smarts" and be very aware of whats going on around you.
For example from my hotel I went to gas station/corner store, it wasnt quite nite time yet, but it was already starting to get dark... there were some guys hanging outside the store. So I went in, but when I came out, one of them started to walk in the direction where I had come from, I guess he was assuming I would be going back same way I came and maybe approach me (and not take "no" for an answer...lol), but when I saw him do that, I decided to cross the street instead and act like maybe now I'm going to Chipotle, but from the corner of my eye, I could see that when the guy saw me now going in a different direction, suddenly he wasnt going anywhere either and just came back to same corner....I mean luckily he didnt continue to follow me, but it goes to show that sometimes a simple move on your part, can maybe deter them a little....and again, just be on your toes at all times, because unfortunately that's the way it is in a lot of places now.

This should be considered in all major cities, not just Las Vegas. However, Vegas is the safest city I've lived in vs. LA, Houston, Nashville, Chicago, & New York. Most cities I've visited don't make me feel as safe as Vegas does hands down. Bonus "Vegas has the largest police academy in the United States.

You have your cell phone out you're texting and the bus door opens and boom you just got your cell snatched out your hands from a local teen punk because he/she was eyeing you the whole bus ride, all they need is a window of opportunity or in a case like this one a door and it's a wrap. We were on Freemont by the White Castles after getting some food there and standing at the intersection. My wife was about 30 feet in front of me. She was waiting for the light to turn and walk up Freemont. I noticed that there were 2 "gentlemen" to her left about 10-12 ft away and on "gentleman" to her right. Her handbag was over her right shoulder hanging to her left side. The guy to the right was acting too casual and the guys to the right were acting stiff. the guy to the right was looking back over his shoulder and incidentally made eye contact with me. I then shook my head like "Don't even try it". He then looked directly at the other two guys and they all took off walking in opposite directions. I am pretty sure it was a set up to rob my wife that I thwarted. My heart was pounding as we are from a state that recognizes my concealed carry permit and I don't leave home without it.

We were just at the Strat for a week, in the beginning of July. The Strat itself is great, but I can definitely attest to the sketchiness of the area behind it. (Had no idea it was called Naked City, though, haha.)
There's these weird blocks of homes and apartment buildings that reminded me of the way Compton always looks in movies. We walked to the 7-11 and there was a pack of four or five angry-seeming homeless people just chilling in the parking lot, watching us going in and out.
I've lived in Philadelphia all my life, definitely a rougher city than Vegas, so I know to be alert, and neither me nor my girlfriend were really giving off a wide-eyed touristy type vibe. But yeah, some couple from the Midwest or something, not used to sketch areas, maybe skip the strolls through "Naked City," haha.
Even the Strip itself that far down (or is it up?) is kind of sketch. Standing right outside the hotel, on the Strip side, there were definitely some creeps and junks out. Again, I LOVED the Strat itself (we stayed at Bally's last time, and I actually think the Strat is way cooler) but it's in a weird area. It's just a bit more lonesome than the other areas. We went to that Carl's Jr across the street one night, to try and save money. Man, was that a grim scene. It felt like North Philly.
Nice hotel, the tower is amazing, but for the most part, when you're going out for the evening, you're probably gonna want to catch a Lyft to around the Caesar's area or someplace.
Edit: and to be fair, stuff can pop off ANYWHERE. Just keep your wits about you. And if you're older, maybe stay out of the "neighborhoods" after dark. But Vegas is a great city, and some of the coolest places we went weren't on the Strip.
We had breakfast at this place Makers&Finders in what they call the Summerlin area. That whole area is cool as hell; a bit sketchy, but very cool. Maybe don't go wandering around in that area at night, but I liked it around there. A totally different vibe than the Strip.

Been fortunate to enjoy many wonderful stays in Vegas and the best tip that I could give to someone visiting the town is too bring your common sense and have a good safe time. Too many people go to Vegas and just lose all sense of caution and reality. Just like ANY other city if you are not mindful of your whereabouts and surroundings you will fall victim to bad situations

If you find yourself in the wrong or sketchy area it's important to carry yourself like a non tourist. Even if you're lost don't act like you know where you're going and walk into the nearest store and ask an employee there for directions.

Most important thing for first timers; don't look lost keep your head focused on where your going when your feet stop moving and your head swivels the cat calls and "hey buds" start coming, and multiple armanian taxi drivers pull up and start pitching "clean girls, and cheap drugs". I was 19 and it was certainly an eye opener for me and the white gated community i was raised in, talk about jumping in the deep end.

Escorts target really drunk guys. 6am in the morning walking through the Cosmopolitan completely sober to get breakfast at Subway- I see a preppy well dressed completely shit faced white guy walking hammered with a completely sober black escort tailing him heading to Vesper bar. It was like watching the nature channel - wounded gazelle being hunter by a lion. When I walked back through the Cosmopolitan with my subs, the 2 of them are walking back to Chandelier bar and he's tell her my wallet is missing while she tagging beside him.
    What would you do? Intervene?

    • @bt9003
      @bt9003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Dalai Lama I know Vegas. Been there many times. Escorts come out especially between 1am and 4am and are in for the kill. It's pretty easy to spot them.
I've been approached enough times to know their script - ask what do you do for work. They assess you and if ask them they say they are a dancer... and say lines like "so are you going to take care of me - show me a good time. Usually say they have one kid.
They must be trained by their pimp.
Here's something you wouldn't expect me to say - when I know she is an escort- I have zero interest but I tell her "I'm going to tell you the most important thing you're ever going to hear - the most important thing in life is that you ask Jesus into your heart - I want YOU to go to heaven". I mean it too. Some just walk away but a couple start to cry. For some reason escorts have that effect on me. While I don't say that to others that I care about which I should.

Somebody tried the ol' "hey bud" on me to turn around walking in between Treasure Island and The Mirage in back in August 19,' I just kept walking like I didnt hear him knowing my Gerber knife is at my right hand and that I wasn't dumb or docile.......he gave up after three "hey bud"s. So yes this does go on, maybe you can touch on the areas from the Bellagio to Treasure Island which by crime indicators point to a hot spot here.

One of those hawkers between the casino slipped my iphone headphones off my shoulders when telling me about his CD and offering it to me for free.. then asked for five bucks as I heanded it back ..it happened.. in a minute I realized it and he was off... I don't like Vegas because of the hawkers/beggers/sales ppl between the casinos
