This is honestly one of the best pieces of advice I've ever seen regarding practice habits, and it really applies to every instrument. I have not ever consciously thought about this concept, but I've noticed sudden "explosions" in my progress occasionally, and I never understood why sometimes I improve extremely quickly, and then go through a period of not improving much at all. I was astounded to notice that when I was just combining different things I already knew, my progress was accelerated. This confirms exactly what you've explained here. As a bonus, my weakest area right now is arpeggios, so I'm going to follow this exact exercise now! Absolutely brilliant, I'm subscribing!
Claus, I've been playing Guitar seriously now for 5 years and I taught myself from watching TH-cam videos. However, since I discovered your tutorials, I've decided to only watch your videos going forward. Because your teaching is very simple and easy to understand for me. Also, once I secure this new job, I will have the extra finances to share a little more, and I will figure out how to donate some your way. Because you're way too good of a teacher not to be getting paid from everyone that benefits from your instruction. I'm a teacher as well of an artform and get paid for it, and so should you. So... Thank you for what you do for aspiring guitarist like me Sir.
why would anyone talk down to a man like this? he is an amazing player and he is trying to help other guitar players. did you hear me he is trying to help others. help and you are saying you can't jamwith this method. i think he is the best tacher I've ever witnessed. he is great and my hat's off to you sir for your helping of other musicians
I mostly agree with you, Christian, but he is of course not doing this purely to "help" other musicians. He's mentioned different products he offers (likely not free or at least on his own site which = better chance of your money going his way) at least twice. this is a commercial. Most of the guitar videos on youtube are. Start listening for words like "secret" and phrases like "quickly" or "in just x time" or "this is the one thing you need." He's selling his "Nucleus" program. That is why some people don't feel afraid to criticize the video even though he smiles while he delivers his sales pitch.

This is exactly the type of video I try and seek out as often as possible. The theory of practicing is so much more useful in the long run than any particular exercises.
I have some of Clause's courses and he is an amazing player and an incredibly high energy teacher. Claus ROCKS and so can you. Just a warning to those who are new to this Chanel. IF you're NOT CAREFUL... YOU MAY LEARN SOMETHING. Have fun and ROCK ON CLAUS. Thanks for the lesson!
I went for three years like this thus I've become 4096 times better than I was at the beginning. While this might sound like I'm living the dream, by now no one understands neither what I play nor what I'm talking about. They say it all sounds like indistinguishable noise, but what do they know, right? Undskyld fjollerierne, Claus, jeg kunne ikke lade være - tak for alle de gode inputs. Jeg finder dine tanker utroligt spændende :)
This concept is so simple yet essential. This is how you build your own solos. Every lick you learn and practice is another interchangeable tool in your toolbox that you can use to construct solos and songs. Awesome stuff, thanks!!!
This guy and Troy Grady are the best guitar teachers on TH-cam. They break shit down into a science so you can be efficient at guitar with theory!!! I’m a drummer as well and the same rules apply!!!
EXCELLENT Video!!!!! A friend of mine who is no longer with us, used to always say... "the thought is the cause of it all!! All we have to do is think! Thank you sir... for your rich insight.😎

Hes the only British guy I can understand. Great tutorial, very detailed. Does anyone know what Charvel model he’s using on this video? Keep teaching and someday some of us will get to where you’re at now. Thank you
A very good, helpful, clear, tutorial. This also endorses the more knowledge of actual scales a player has then the more quickly they can appreciate such advice as this. Major scale and then learn to play it, flat 3rd, flat 5th, flat 5th, etc, then learn pentatonic majors, minors, understand chord structures, it all comes together well even if finger speed is not fast. The wonderful late Ross Hannaford of Australia's Daddy Cool, in for example, Come Back Again, plays little and plays slow, the less he plays, the more you want!
While I find this lesson very valuable and I very thankful, one thing that confused the hell out of me and will confuse millions like me is that at one point you said "play the 12th fret on the b-string". The rest of the time you would say the 13th fret. It is the 13th fret, not the 12th but that one mistake will confuse so many less experienced players to frustration. Others, not so much. Thanks for the insight, advice, knowledge and very clearly, your mastery of the instrument to help others out. Hugely appreciated.
Hi, master !! Many thanks, the best lesson I found at YT. It's challenging but super shown. And encouraging words are beneficial !!! I will practice your lessons, your technique is famous.
This is a great video lesson!!! I watched Gary Clark Jr. do this & it was amazing how he was using 1 lick but varying the speed and note placement & getting a lot of different sounds!!!🙏🙏🙏
Wonderful will never ended.. I got a good teacher today with very clear explanation' let me follow you from now can't waiting to be off So i can hit My Guitar like a fool..
Extremely helpful thank you very much I will definitely be watching this video over and over again I been wondering how to expand upon a arpeggio sweep patern and use it in my playing and this is just what I needed very simple yet informative. I love it, thanks a bunch!
For me. I like doing this technique on a 3string diminished pattern, that help me to get better from day to the next day. It feel like a litte bit bored.. But if u do every day and keep practice. It will make u play perfect.. Im newbie lol.. Love this tutorial and explanation
Great video for connecting familiar patterns for creating meaningful runs. Honest practice/work/repetition really pays off with it ( i know...obvious), but if you get after it, it'll pay off REALLY well.
Simple question: At 5:49, when you go from 12 to 14 on the G string and release that, how do you prevent the open G string from ringing out? I’ve got a Charvel like yours on a clean tone, and the moment I move from that G string back up to the B string, the open G rings out annoyingly. Thanks! And great lesson!!!
I can only imagine it is through right hand palm or left hand finger muting, am trying to work that one out with little luck, I can’t see how it is done in this vid, maybe I just need a better guitar, lol.
Notice that the right hand "tracks* the left as it moves to a new string. Usually, anything below the fretting hand is muted by the left, conversely, anything above the fretted string is muted with the right. When practicing something like this, rest your right hand in a position that will completely mute the D, A and E strings, and ensure that the G string rings true. As you strike the G string and proceed to the B, allow your right hand to subtly track the left which will now mute the G string as you strike the B, and so on. If you mute the G string before striking the B, you'll end up with gaps between each note. You'll therefore need to ensure that you don't mute too early before striking the following string. The "tracking" movements of the right hand don't need to be excessive, but emphasize them at first to feel the principle and then refine the movements as you develop.
Well I don't know about any 'guarantees' but this is sure an interested point your making. I had a very similar experience once when I worked with Troy Stetina's Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar. It doesn't matter who finally puts your focus on where your potential for improvement lies, only thing that counts is that you realise it. The sooner the better of course.
experienced this when learning the piano. my skill sky rocketed as soon as i stopped learning songs. i am now learning guitar and for some reason totally ignored that. thanks for pointing this out.

The thing that seems to improve my playing - every time - is simply working on new pieces, or even arranging a couple of lines differently in a piece, so I'm using a slightly different technique.
Back when I was still playing(before injuring my left hand) this was how I moved forward. Sold my guitar because of demotivation. Now I'm fully recovered and geared again, it's great to see you teach this method, the best way I learned to play. And yes, I'll be using this approach again

Xavier Corena that's what gives guitarist like page have such a unique recognisable sound. If there was no similarities or repeating patterns in what they played they would have unrecognisable sounds like every average day guitar player.
Very cool. Keep it simple in the pattern, but it's really the right hand efficiency that is making it happen. Any practices to keep the open strings from ringing out?
