  • We are doing a detailed comparison between these two titans of the tactical folder world. Is one just a more modern version of the other?

I have both and I’d take the Amphibian every time. The Commander is a classic but I like everything about the Microtech more. Quality, materials, ergonomics, lock etc.

Emerson probably has more designs than any other knife maker/company. Definitely has more cool badass designs i like almost all of them cant say that about many companies. He does need to update just a little bit or atleast offer more colors/options without charging 200-300$ more than the base model

When I first saw the microtech I thought of the commander as well. Thanks for the comparison.

I like thumb disks but with the caveat that Pete Gray designs it with rifle knurling
Also in terms terms of a better lock im not sure but i do know id rather disassemble the Emerson as its made to be field stripped. If your ram lok gets gunked up and youre not around a hex tool or whatever they use now then youre assed out
Another good Emerson showdown would be the A100/mini vs the 940

I mean, if you Emerson gets dunked up and you are not around a Phillips head you are SOL too.

I don't own an Emerson Tactical Folder. Why? I don't like Liner-Lock Folders for my personal Self-Defense Folders. Especially, one's with an Titanium Leaf-Spring for it's Liner-Lock. Titanium and Aluminum are not good materials for Liner-Lock Leaf-Springs, in my opinion.
With that said, I do own 4 Microtech, Manual, Ram-Lok Folders. And, I absolutely luv them. So, I would pick your 7075 Aluminum Amphibian (I have an Aluminum Amphibian, too). :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Has the Ramlok failure issue been addressed?

As far as I know not publicly. However it seems to be resolved on new knives

Amphibian for me. While I do prefer the blade steel, the big reason is I hate liner/frame locks where my fingers are close to the blade edge. This also keeps my bank account saved from going overboard as well.

Im a bit a microtech fan. For me they just have a cool style and an aura of high and quality. For me even a bit more than similar brands like spiderco, benchmade, emerson. Hard to explain. Maybe like the general has the microtech and the soldier one of the other brands😂
Very cool that they seem to increase the production of their folding knives so non americans have a chance to get them without going to ebay. And also the pricing is becoming very interesiting. Very cool to finally have a Socom elite in the collection. The stich and Amphibian would also be interesting

You’re forgetting Harsey as far as being a pioneer of the tactical folder.

Emersons are so sick, i wish they would lose the liner lock and make the same classic designs with a simole lockback. Liner lock sucks so bad.

Flip that amphibian over and tap it against the table to see if the lock fails on you.

There are dozens of recurve bladed knives out there. The Emerson was not the first and the original version of the Amphibian was probably out before it. Unless you have not seen any knives prior to 2000 there is nothing new here. I see very little resemblance. I'll take a Microtech any day over an Emerson. Emersons are dated and have not done anything new since they were born. Even when Emerson knives came out they were nothing new.
