Dawn Wells is as charming in real life as she was in the show. And Bob Denver... my dad actually got to meet him. Dad had returned from Vietnam, an amputee, and was touring the CBS studios with some friends who were also veterans of various handicaps. They met many celebrities... Doris Day, Phyllis Diller, Don Adams from ‘Get Smart’, Arthur O’Connell, and many others. But Bob Denver was probably the kindest, and actually very generous. When he heard that the veterans’ old black-and-White TV had been taken away for some reason I cannot remember, Denver bought them a brand new Color TV set (which was unusual in those days, and expensive). Dad also got to meet the skipper, Alan Hale Jr., briefly at his restaurant. I always loved it when Dad told me about each celebrity, what it was like meeting them, what his first impresssions were of them and their personalities.
Thank you, for sharing these great memories, Brian. As a United States Navy Desert Storm veteran, I'd like to thank your dad for his service. I grew up, watching 'Gilligan's Island'. Bob Denver was a class act. I love that he bought that color TV for veterans.
That's a great hearing about your dad and his encounters with those celebrities. I lived in Hollywood for a couple years after college and met Alan Hale Jr. at the Ralph's supermarket. He lived nearby and I had heard he regularly wore his Skipper's hat in public. He was very personable and was very gracious to fans. That was great seeing him.
I was SO sad to hear of her passing. I still am. I had the pleasure of meeting her and getting her autograph, back in 1983 or 1984. (I was the manger of a small movie theatre on Hollywood Blvd at the time. She and a couple of her girlfriends came in to watch whatever movie we were showing.) I was able to chat with her for a just a minute or two, but I'll always treasure that memory. We're all gonna miss you Dawn. Thanks for being such a class act.
It always angered me that Gilligan's Island had been renewed for a 4th season but was then abruptly canceled because the wife of CBS CEO William Paley was upset that Gunsmoke was canceled and forced her husband to bring it back. Paley had to cancel Gilligan's Island to fit Gunsmoke back into the schedule
I greatly envy those men who meet and marry a girl like Dawn--just as beautiful on the inside and they are on the outside. They are very few and far between. I'd bet Ms. Wells ex-husband must have been a real loser to divorce her
I read an article some time in the 90s about that tidbit where Bob Denver Told the network brass he wanted last billing to force their hand, ensuring that , "the Professor and Mary Ann. Here on Gilligan's Isle," would ring through the ages. An excellent example of personal integrity.

Bob Denver spent his later years in Princeton, West Virginia, and he exclaimed many times that he loved living in West Virginia. The people in WV greeted him with kindness and welcomed him, treated him as a local celebrity. Last account, his wife still lives in WV and is doing well.

I met Gilligan (Bob Denver) with an older woman and another woman if my memory is correct was his mother and sister at a Reno Nevada airport years ago 87 or 88 I was conciderate of the fact that maybe he was needing to get on his flight. He had a few bags of luggage with him. I remember saying "Im not going to take up your time I'm sure you have to get to where you're going as I do too, I didn't even ask for an autograph (My thought was I didnt want to prevent him any delay or make him miss his flight) I was 20 something. I said "I just wanted to say I love all your work and this is a big thrill just to run into you. He shook my hand, and I said "My family grew up watching every episode of Gilligan's Island, and I'm so happy just to say hello" He said "Well thank you so much" He asked me my name, and asked where I was heading? I told him "I am going to Vegas for a company trip" He said thats wonderful you'll love it" Then he introduced me to two ladies, if I'm not mistaken one was his mother she was an older lady on the left of him and the other his sister on his right. They smiled. I think he said he was going to South Lake Tahoe or that he had just come from Vegas. I said "It is so nice to meet you and your loved ones, I'll let you all go now and you all have a nice flight and I wish the best for you" He shook my hand again, and smiled, and off I went. I remember thinking ass I walked on my way "Aint that something I just met Gilligan"
What's really beautiful about this interview is the fact that Pat Sajak is a real person and so are Dawn and Gilligan I'm sorry Bob Denver but really if they had listened to him from the beginning they might have been rescued earlier that's all I'm going to say except for this you people made my childhood livable and I'm talking to the Dead

A fun little show that many of us grew up watching .I'm 59 and am probably the 1st of several generation's to grow up watching Gilligan's island.It's2018 and sadly most of the cast are no longer with us but left us with great memories .Miss Wells is still with us recovering from an accident of some kind still a buetiful lady inside and out.

I've seen so many interviews of Dawn Wells and of other people who knew her talking about her, and I get the impression she is probably the nicest "Hollywood Celebrity" ever. So refreshingly kind and normal and down to earth. She's on Facebook and still responds to comments from fans.
Even in her late seventies she was looking good. I was always more of a "Mary Ann" than a "Ginger" fan (though Tina Louise is no pig herself). Bummer that no one from that series got residuals for reruns even though it is one of the most highly syndicated shows in history. If they had they would all easily be millionaires like Thurston Howell the Third.
I loved that cast, and I still Love the cast. And I seriously admire Dawn for making that clothing line, for the elderly. I just wish that those clothes were still available, for my elderly mom. ♡
Critics absolutely hated it-but the audience loved it--it's interesting that during the 3rd season some of those critics were beginning to see the charm and humor of the show and commented that the banter between Gilligan and the Skipper was like watching "Laurel and Hardy"
I've always loved this show! I couldn't wait to see it every week! I was a little girl then and I get the same warm feeling when I watch it! I think it's so deep, really! It shows humanity as it was back then. There was no real violence, nobody got hurt, no sexual harrasments, always care, respect and love. No gossiping, no hate. We could learn a lot with that show!!! Now Mary Ann and Ginger are the only ones left!! :( Too bad Ginger hates the show, but thanks to the show she got famous, although she'll never admit it! I had the pleasure (honor really) of meeting Dawn Wells about the time this interview plus or minus a year. She lived not far from Hudson Fl where a friend of mine lived. We met her on the beach and trying not to be a total fanboy (and failing miserably), I told her she helped get me through puberty. She laughed and said I was one of SO many guys to tell her that!😝☺

She was accompanied by a couple of her friends who helped her staff the booth, and they all could not have been nicer or more patient with the many fans gathered there... mostly men! lol Dawn was wonderful that day and gave us fans some insights into the memoir/book that she would have published about a year later -- 'What Would Mary Ann Do?" She noted that she wasn't completely wild about the title, but the publisher thought it would be a good idea since the book was to be both autobiography as well as a semi self-help book. One of my first jobs out of high school was working at a Pontiac dealer. One of the older guys was a marine in the 1960s he was fly from California to Michigan and sat next to Barbara Eden. He said she was so kind and down to earth to him. He told us that she was incredibly beautiful and just very easy to talk with.
At the time Bob didn't even tell Dawn that he was the one who pushed to get her and the Professor into the song. She was surprised to hear it in this interview 25 years later.
Um - I thought Gilligan's Island was intolerably silly, almost unwatchable, but maybe I should re-watch and re-evaluate it. You know, for research purposes.
When I'm finally called home, my Heaven is going to include me sitting between Bob Denver and Dawn Wells front row center watching The Beatles while Samantha Stevens and Ellie May Clampett hand us popcorn and Pepsi. What cool people. RIP you two, you made my childhood a bit brighter.

Dawn Wells' line of clothes based on costume design to help people who have difficulty dressing is a great idea -- I've never seen anything advertised like this, and I wonder if such targeted clothes designs now exist and if people who need them know they exist.
They were such good friends. He was so kind who made the producers include Maryann and the professor in opening credits. Both were excluded in the first season opening.
Dawn Wells is a class act. At 51 she was still beautiful. I miss the 1980's and 1990's when women talk show guests wore "normal" much more conservative clothing.

Even in her late seventies she was looking good. I was always more of a "Mary Ann" than a "Ginger" fan (though Tina Louise is no pig herself). Bummer that no one from that series got residuals for reruns even though it is one of the most highly syndicated shows in history. If they had they would all easily be millionaires like Thurston Howell the Third.

Gilligan island was one of the best shows in the history of television.
Critics absolutely hated it-but the audience loved it--it's interesting that during the 3rd season some of those critics were beginning to see the charm and humor of the show and commented that the banter between Gilligan and the Skipper was like watching "Laurel and Hardy"

I've always loved this show! I couldn't wait to see it every week! I was a little girl then and I get the same warm feeling when I watch it! I think it's so deep, really! It shows humanity as it was back then. There was no real violence, nobody got hurt, no sexual harrasments, always care, respect and love. No gossiping, no hate. We could learn a lot with that show!!! Now Mary Ann and Ginger are the only ones left!! :( Too bad Ginger hates the show, but thanks to the show she got famous, although she'll never admit it! And I bet she also learned a lot, although she won't admit that either! Well, thank you cast, crew and creator of Gilligan's Island! God bless you all!!!

I had the pleasure (honor really) of meeting Dawn Wells about the time this interview plus or minus a year.
She lived not far from Hudson Fl where a friend of mine lived. We met her on the beach and trying not to be a total fanboy (and failing miserably), I told her she helped get me through puberty.
She laughed and said I was one of SO many guys to tell her that!😝☺
Thank you for sharing this story. Great story. One of our guys here on the staff ('M'), met Dawn a few years ago in San Jose/Santa Clara area at a television fan convention. She was accompanied by a couple of her friends who helped her staff the booth, and they all could not have been nicer or more patient with the many fans gathered there... mostly men! lol Dawn was wonderful that day and gave us fans some insights into the memoir/book that she would have published about a year later -- 'What Would Mary Ann Do?" She noted that she wasn't completely wild about the title, but the publisher thought it would be a good idea since the book was to be both autobiography as well as a semi self-help book. The cast was fun.
One of my first jobs out of high school was working at a Pontiac dealer. One of the older guys was a marine in the 1960s he was fly from California to Michigan and sat next to Barbara Eden. He said she was so kind and down to earth to him. He told us that she was incredibly beautiful and just very easy to talk with.
Dawn Wells is really down to earth and friendly, just like the character she played on "Gilligan's Island". Also, she had a butt that wouldn't quit !

I watched the entire series during the 1970s after school. Now I have the first season on DVD. The other classic show was The Beverly Hillbillies.
Why stop at Season 1? Get the other two, my good man! I do!
Fact: "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Gilligan's Island", and "The Brady Bunch" all began on September 26. TBH in 1962, GI in 1964 and TBB in 1969.
A more innocent time back then. Fun to watch and pass the time when I was preparing dinner.
Bob Denver was actually a very good actor, and had quite a career before G.I.

Dawn Wells' line of clothes based on costume design to help people who have difficulty dressing is a great idea -- I've never seen anything advertised like this, and I wonder if such targeted clothes designs now exist and if people who need them know they exist.

Dawn Wells is a class act. At 51 she was still beautiful. I miss the 1980's and 1990's when women talk show guests wore "normal" much more conservative clothing.
Dawn Wells was recently diagnosed with dementia. She is living in an assisted living facility in southern California.
