Russell was a WWII vet. His B-25 was shot down over the Phillippines and he broke both ankles in the parachute landing. Godspeed to you fine Sir! You got tenure.
Little known fact: When offered the role of the professor, Russell Johnson accepted under one condition. He insisted that whenever his character's expertise was enlisted as a professor of science, the science itself had to be sound. Johnson was concerned that young viewers not be misled with erroneous representations of known scientific fact.
RIP, Russ "Professor" Johnson A little known fact was that the original theme song for the show that ended with "and the rest" was changed at the strong insistence of Bob Denver (Gilligan), who made it clear that he wanted the Professor and Maryanne in the song. The producers made the change. It shows the magnanimity from Bob that's really quite touching.
Ginger: "But professor, haven't you ever taken a girl to a drive-in movie before?" Professor: " Yes i have. But the curvature of the screen and the fidelity of the sound, made it impossible to enjoy the picture"........LMAO.
What a class act. Says nice things about everyone, with not a harsh word even for Tina Louise, who is well known for being aloof to her time on the show. Also a WWII hero shot down in the Pacific and wounded. A life well lived, and sad to see him go. One of the last from the true golden age of TV.
Great show -- wonderful memories ---- a time when TV protected children.. (I was one of them watching TV after school) and lots of pure clean comedy --- honest laughter... RIP Mr. Johnson and thank you....
My favorite character of his (Russell Johnson) in Gilligan's Island was when he played the old man in Gilligan's Jack-and-the-Beanstalk dream sequence/skit. Hilarious!
I was just lamenting how no one shows reruns of 'Gilligan's Island', anymore, and Bam!, Mister Russel Johnson passes and now TV Land has been showing reruns almost daily. I pursued a love of science, due, in part, to The Professor saving the day with science and his MacGiver like skills with bamboo and coconut shells. You made a difference in my life, Russel 'Professor' Johnson!!
Alan Hale loved being the Skipper. He wore that hat as much as he could. He loved being recognized. He was part owner of a restaurant and was often there. Ans although not many Gilligan fans knew about his father his eyes would light up when asked about him.
his character as the professor went all around the world..good guy, great actor,,he his heart was broken when he lost his son..never recovered as himself.
When I was younger I had such a crush on The Professor. Later in high school I wished the Professor could help me with my exams. Russell was such a talented actor in those days. Still love watching him in Twilight Zone
I just finished watching the 1961 thriller, "The Hungry Glass." I really enjoyed the film and it was a nice story line. Russel Johnson and William Shatner starred in the film, and their acting was great!
He was such a funny guy on the show-- and seemed to be a nice guy in real life. Some of the parts he played in the dream scenes on GI were absolutely hilarious. Very sad news that he passed away.
Gilligans Island was part of my life as a kid in the 60s . He was so close to make a contraption to get them all of the island . Now I would love to be stranded on that island with Ginger mmmmmm . Especially way the world is now gosh I love to be on that island . Thanks Professor and Skipper for keeping things running smoothly .
Although it was mostly a silly sitcom, "Gilligan's Island" was a fun show to watch. What year was this interview conducted? Russell looks great here! R.I.P., Alan Hale, Jr., Bob Denver, Natalie Schaefer & Jim Backus.
The producers sold the show to Tina into thinking that SHE was going to be the main character, not Gilligan. LOL She should have figured it out from the Title of the Show.....Gilligan's Isle.
I know it was just a simple sitcom so not a real point of over-thinking it but why would the Howell's with all their money "rough it" by going on a 3-hour tour with the rest of the Castaways? You'd think they'd have had their own super yacht. Oh well. LOL
Thats what Tina Louise says Sherwood Scwartz said he never said that to her he had the same problems with her that he had with Robert Reed on The Brady Bunch.
Does anyone know the year in which this interview took place? Glad to hear Russell Johnson's doing well! There are only three castaways still with us - Ginger (Tina Louise), The Professor [Roy Hinkley] (Russell Johnson) & Mary Ann (Dawn Wells). R.I.P., Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III), Alan Hale, Jr. (The Skipper) [Jonas Grumby]. Natalie Schafer (Lovey Wentworth Howell) & Bob Denver (Willy Gilligan). R.I.P., Sherwood Schwartz.
Brian Keane are you NUTS? The original Stepford Wives was an awesome movie the remake was a piece of crap. Tina was in lots of great movies "Death Scream" "The Wrecking Crew" with SHaron Tate "How to Commit Marriage" with Jackie Gleason!
I LOVED THE SEXY TINA LOUISE TO BAD SHE DIDN'T HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH THE SHOW.SHE WAS REALLLY GREAT, I HAVE THE SECOND SEASON DVD OF THE HOW WITH THE BEAUTY CONTEST IN IT!!! HEZEKIAH MANIGO JR.
Like every other adolescent boy, I was smitten with Ginger. If it's true she remained aloof from the show and cast, that's a downer. Not to say anything mean, but has anyone seen what she looks like these days? Ewwww. Plastic surgery gone horribly wrong, looks like.
True dat, but Dawn Wells STILL looks amazing. On the show, she was so naturally beautiful that even as a very young kid, I couldn't take my eyes off of her. What a babe.
Alan Hale showed up for charity events even when he was dying. What a great guy. RIP Skipper!!
Russell was a WWII vet. His B-25 was shot down over the Phillippines and he broke both ankles in the parachute landing. Godspeed to you fine Sir! You got tenure.
He's a gentleman. Doesn't say anything bad about anybody.

Alan would show up for children's benefits in costume and in genuine sincere delight. What a guy.
A sad day. Russell Johnson just passed on today. RIP, I have so many memories of Gilligan's Island.
RIP, Russ "Professor" Johnson

Russell is absolutely right about the chemistry--everybody created a wonderful show.
This is such a treat. Few actors - indeed, few people of any profession - speak of ALL their coworkers with such fondness and nostalgia.
Russell, thanks for serving your country...................and making us laugh several years later. You are missed.
What a class act.

I always thought the "Professor" was the coolest character in Gilligans Island. He's the guy I would have wished to be if stranded on a desert isle.
With Mary Ann and Ginger on the island, why would he invent a boat?
Johnson had a long life. He died at 89 and seemed quite comfortable in his skin.
The Professor was the glue that held the Castaways together!
I was sad to hear one of my TV heroes had passed on.
Good ol' Professor. Every "science minded boy" admired him.
Great show -- wonderful memories ---- a time when TV protected children.. (I was one of them watching TV after school) and lots of pure clean comedy --- honest laughter... RIP Mr. Johnson and thank you....
RIP Professor. 1925 - 2014
Rest in Peace Professor, thanks for everything!!
R.I.P. Russell Johnson..Thanks for all the laughs...you are much loved!!!
My favorite character of his (Russell Johnson) in Gilligan's Island was when he played the old man in Gilligan's Jack-and-the-Beanstalk dream sequence/skit. Hilarious!
Sending much love to the person who made coconut radios long before they invented ones made of ham
RIP Russell Johnson. Thank you for all the memories.

Outstanding guy! Always seems upbeat with a good attitude. A great role model.

The producers sold the show to Tina into thinking that SHE was going to be the main character, not Gilligan. LOL She should have figured it out from the Title of the Show.....Gilligan's Isle.
great show!
I often forget about Dobie Gillis!
I know it was just a simple sitcom so not a real point of over-thinking it but why would the Howell's with all their money "rough it" by going on a 3-hour tour with the rest of the Castaways? You'd think they'd have had their own super yacht. Oh well. LOL

LIKE A SOMEBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODE!!!
R.I.P. Professor .
it's so odd that reuben Kincaid died today as well
Red Hot Chili Peppers - What Hits!? (Full Album)
Actually Tina only appeared in 5 episodes during the 1st season 78-79
Does anyone know the year in which this interview took place? Glad to hear Russell Johnson's doing well! There are only three castaways still with us - Ginger (Tina Louise), The Professor [Roy Hinkley] (Russell Johnson) & Mary Ann (Dawn Wells).

@WickedTornado Agreed Fully. Except - what happened to the world - not just stateside.
Or Carroll O'Connor as Gilligan , and Sherman Hemsley as The Skipper...
Brian Keane are you NUTS? The original Stepford Wives was an awesome movie the remake was a piece of crap. Tina was in lots of great movies "Death Scream" "The Wrecking Crew" with SHaron Tate "How to Commit Marriage" with Jackie Gleason!
The Professor was my favorite character anyway, B/C I always knew he was hittin' Mary Anne.
They made a raft in one episode but it was washed away in a storm.
Yeah she worked on Dallas for three years, not saying much oh yeah also she made a movie The Stepford Wives in 1976, wasn't that good
Yea, he was smart enough to get away with it, and no one knew.
Tina Louise seemed to hate her association with Gilligan's Island, from w / I've read. I don't think she's really worked in tv or movies since then.
I LOVED THE SEXY TINA LOUISE TO BAD SHE DIDN'T HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH THE SHOW.SHE WAS REALLLY GREAT, I HAVE THE SECOND SEASON DVD OF THE HOW WITH THE BEAUTY CONTEST IN IT!!! HEZEKIAH MANIGO JR.

Well it would have flopped.
his incredible number of film roles far outweigh the piddly role on this forgettable series.
