Paint is a cool project to do when you do it in a quick and organized way, the colors give you this feeling of accomplishment, you see big differences on the rooms and all that nice stuff, BUT!! if you do those projects with a better technique you will also have time to relax.

Thank you for the suggestions. Lighting plays a big roll on painting ceilings, as you said full strokes when you have enough paint on the surface is crucial to have a ceiling without patches.
2nd generation painter. I like that you do not rush, and apply a quality coat. Remember that he is not making videos to show pros how to paint, he is making videos for the beginner, or semi-experienced painter.

I haven't commented yet, but I am a professional painter and looking to start making my own videos to help people as well, as people are getting more and more hard up for cash so I think it is good to be able to teach to do the job properly, the right tools to use as cheap does not work. But in reply to what you are saying of course I have the right to comment here if I think it is being done wrong or there is an easier and better way and I am sure people would appreciate it if I added useful tips and do's and donts as not all people who post videos here teaching actually do it right themselves and can leave people in a right mess.
On that note if anyone would like to learn anything specific about painting please get in touch on my channel and I will start making videos once demand grows and I know what people want. I have bee thinking about this for a long time now and it will be great that I can help people whilst actually working on customers houses at the same time.

Thank you, having workers is not easy, but you have to have them, some are better than others and takes a long time to train them right. Use artificial light sources to spot effects I do it in many different type of projects like finishing walls and ceilings plaster or compounds. Thank you for watching.

I am a home DIY'er. I hate painting ceilings. I watched your video yesterday and did this technique today. Wow....what a difference. Regardless of whether you like this technique or not, it taught me a valuable lesson. Be sure to use enough paint on your roller. I think that is where a lot of DIYer's make the mistake is not using enough paint. I applied an entire coat to my 9 ft ceiling of about 200 square feet in less than 30 minutes. Thank you!
I am glad you have a better way to paint!!!, please be more detailed in the process and let's teach others about it. So far after over a million square feet of paint surface I find to have paint on the surface better than just picking small amounts and spreading them as you go, I get less thin areas and a save lots of time painting over many coat. Noticed all the pro painters are worried about TIME. It's all about speed instead of a professional job. This guy actually looks like he cares and does nice work.
The reason behind the issue of time,at least for me anyways,is to always have a wet edge of paint to roll back into which will leave you with no lap lines.If you go slow,the paint where you started will be dry before you finish your first pass across the ceiling and back to where you started for the next pass.The temp in the house has to be cooler than room temp aspescially on larger ceilings as heat rises so the ceiling will always be the warmest surface.The end result will always prove the quality of the work done so the speed in which the work is done isnt really a factor unless the work done is done quickly by a bad painter ,but when the painters done and the paint is dry,only then will you know for sure and also,thats when you should decide to pay for the work or not.Hope this helps to clarify things for you.Take care my friend.
Everyone has a way that they do things but certain things are done in way that yields the best results and is efficient. Try my way you;ll be surprised at how quickly you can do a ceiling and not over-rolling the paint will keep a wet edge and stop banding. Also roll towards the major light source or the shortest length, the shortest length helps to keep a wet edge but if this is in conflict choose the light source to roll towards. :-)

I wouldnt claim to know more than the next guy, but does anyone on youtube roll out of a 5 with a grid.....a pan takes forever....u can simply move the five around easy and u dont have to worry about stepping in the pan accidentally

Hello J I , i find that you will not get roller marks (lines) if you just use a 1/2 inch 100 percent lambskin roller cover that sells for about 9 0r 10 bucks at H/Depot or retails for about 13 bucks a paint stores. and roll it by hand without a roller pole . you will have to roll it sideways as Hugo suggested and some times in a random "x" pattern depending on the curvature of the wall .

I'm a painter, and I'm constantly looking at ways to improve my techniques. That includes watching TH-cam videos to see how others are doing it. While I don't normally respond, I had to thumbs down this video. I do agree with Hugo about never allowing your roller to be dry. You should never be pushing your roller hard to apply paint. Always keep your roller wet! But why is he starting in the middle? first off, cut-in the edges of the entire ceiling with a brush; it's easier if you can just brush down onto the wall, as you will then only be cutting in one line (the wall paint), and then start on One side of ceiling with your roller (an 18" roller is preferable, but not necessary). Keep your line nice and wet, and do your best to go across the entire ceiling with each line, and you will be fine (especially since your ceiling is most likely flat paint).

I watched this entire series and I had sworn I heard him say he already went and cut-in the edges before he started with the roller. Maybe it was at the end of the video where he was showing how to sand the ceiling.
Personally, I agree with Hugo, and totally disagree with you. I have painted a lot in my life, mostly in the Navy as a Boatswainsmate. Hugo's technique plays on getting it done quick, like icing a cake, get the paint on the ceiling, a substantial amount of it, then spread it around all at once in large patches, because you don't have to be patient and slow about it if you start from the middle, you can haul butt, and keep a better grip on quality control, paint spread thickness! :)
but if he doesn't start in the middle this method won't work, if you're painting the regular way, as in reloading often then yes what you say is probably the straight forward way to do it. However if you apply lots of paint and then spread it out you need to spread it in all directions you can't just start in a corner. It's just a different method.
I haven't been painting that long and I also try to learn from YT, and from my understanding so far after trying lots of different methods, there is really no right or wrong, there is one way and theres another way that's all.

I was reading your comments and it appears to me that perhaps you are a professional painter, (I could b wrong). I'm trying to paint my circular staircase but it has been really hard because obviously is not a square wall. I'm getting lines from the roller and the bottom and top finish is terrible because is not a straight line, its on an angle. Do you have any tips I may b able to use. There are no videos for this, may b you can make one. Thanks.
Hello, In some cases I build surfaces that are not typical, like the one you are having issues with; the contact points of your roller are provably just two (both ends), try painting horizontally instead, that way you follow the flatter surfaces. And you are using a 9" roller for a start ? why not use a 12" roller and a proper professional roller tray to hold more paint ? Sorry to sound niggly but also back rolling is a great way to paint a ceiling very fast and you get much better coverage at the same time and a lot nicer finish, just remember to always roll it on and roll it off properly going back over it several times so you don't get an un even surface which is very important, we call them tram lines, and orange peal for when it is on to thick.

Of course and I understand that :-) The main reason I have been visiting many How to clips online is because I am a pro decorator and have been for 15 years, and have thought about doing similar for UK audiences(but not got around to it yet), but mainly teaching them how to fill, rub down, use decorators caulk and a lot of the preparation stages as I feel they are more important than the painting itself as that is what decides if the job is good or not as I am sure you will agree ? Of course using a roller is also something that needs to be taught as there is an art to it as well and how it is used, and much more even down to clips explaining the correct tools and not just cheap ones as that is also what can make a great job. Sometimes spending a little more on the right tools to begin with saves you money in the long run as they last so much longer if looked after correctly and makes the pro job rather than average. Thanks for replying and hope you are busy in your work in the real world as it has certainly slowed down for a lot of people.

I will tell you the easiest way to paint a ceiling, use a paint sprayer. But do this in an empty room before all the molding and flooring is installed, just mask off the windows. Since the color is normally white, doesn't hurt to get paint on the walls. With the walls, just use a piece of wide cardboard to prevent overspray from hitting the ceiling. That line is going to be covered up with crown molding anyway.
Ha, have a 15 by 30 foot master bedroom that needs the ceiling to be painted. Already finished, tons of furniture in there. Any paint roller is bound to drip. So the entire area has to be masked and covered, all the window dressings have to be removed. Just saying, no such thing as an easy way. Using top equipment and a handle is obvious.
Yet another way is not to paint it all all, use some kind of tiles or ceiling covering. Or just say the heck with it.
Just not possible unless you are working on building sites. Most of the jobs like this are smaller DIY tasks and it would just be to much effort to set up a spray gun, clear the room, mask up everything that doesn't want spraying and then the massive job of cleaning the spray gun out afterwards as well. I do use spray machines on industrial units, farm units and large empty building projects as that way it can save you a ton of money, but just for the little job of painting some ones living room or bedroom it really doesn't pay for the time it takes to set up and use. But I do agree they are useful on larger projects.
It really doesn't take long to paint a ceiling with making no mess and using a roller just using plastic sheets and then dust sheets, and average room can be done very quickly, again i do this all the time and it does save so much time. And if the right roller is used you very rarely get much mess from it as well to be honest.

Good technique, Hugo! I never use a fan when painting though, especially walls, throws dust on the job and dries what it blows on too quickly.
Correct, the area must be fairly clean to use fans and the paint t already applied before the fan helps you drying it
I'm pretty bad at most any DIY stuff, but this method worked for me! And I even had the luck of not needing to mind the walls, since it's all getting the same color (White). And I was going replace the carpet too, so it didn't matter if paint fell on that either. Honestly, when you're going to fix your entire room, this method is perfect. Even if you drip, doesn't matter. And if you want your walls a different color? A base coat of white (let's be honest, who paints their ceilings black right?) or whatever color you use for your ceiling on the walls won't hurt either. Thanks Hugo!

i did this once..! to get the extra thick Latex on the freaking ceiling and yess... it was too much so i tried to spread it out just like you did on a new ceiling and going over a spot i already had done it came F***** off with Expensive Latex >:@ on a brand new ceiling for crying out loud. i had to hire this strange extended gatling gun machine and O M G my shoulders are burning like... yeah nice refining machine to work with. Any Waaaays what i want to tell people here is that you can mix the Latex paint with just water and do it fast and then do it again the next day sow by making it less thick it will easily spread and easy to get it on the ceiling and when the water is too dry up the White dense will appear so don't worry that you think it ain't the White collar you want it to be goes it just needs to Dry and Tadaa there is your nice collar which of course the mixing with water you have the first layer CORRECTLY on the ceiling and evenly spreaded and you can get a whole lot more Ceiling done by mixing the paint with the water so that means less Latex to get the most of the areas done and that saves your Bills as you can spend it on something else of the house project. With my method you cannot make mistakes and you can go as many times over as you please to go until you are satisfied. So get another Bucked and mix it with some water then apply it on the ceiling and let it dry ! the water will vanish and the White powder will come together which of course make the big surface area's easily done and so you make the underlayer more white and do it 1 time over and whala you're ready to move on to the next project. Keep in mind that when you have mixed the latex with water you will need to pay ***attention*** be cause the paint is less thick and then your Latex Role will spill a little more thin latex around if you go do your ceiling like a BEAST !!! just get some plastic around the room and go for it, then you just need to take your time and move the latex role a little slower from front to back in long strokes. EASY ! think of it this way... is it save to do : YES does this save me money : YES can i go over it again if i am not pleased with the results : YES if you think nahhh i will just do this once and thick LOL well remember to putt some ice on your *shoulders* when you're done ! Painting on a surface that is done a little with the water will suck in the paint in the ceiling as the water will dry and to do it again and you're done :)) Just like the Car paint you'll need underlayer to get the right results. if you are still confused about this method then just try a small area and see what happens GOODLUCK !

No, This is not the correct way to paint a ceiling. I value a professional finish over speed any day and if you can paint a ceiling in 10 minutes you're doing something wrong. You paint edges first using a 3" or 4" brush, making sure to lay off with light strokes and making sure you have a feather edge away from the wall, You use a 12" or 15" roller depending on the size of the ceiling and crosshatch to get an even spread, laying off with each load of paint, and always maintain a wet edge.
They don't hold a lot of paint, are short pile or thinly fibred, leave a poor finish and waste time, a common issue with cheap rollers is tracks. Same goes for brushes, buy a good quality one and it should last a DIY'er years.
In order to achieve a good finish you have to be methodical and focused, speed is also important but not at the expense of quality, anyone can decorate but not everyone can decorate well.
Easier if you roll the ceiling along the width rather than the length, and use full strokes from start to finish. The only reason you'd roll along the length would be to keep the strokes perpendicular the door frame and/or main light source (to hide rolling lines). I suggest also that you lay off regularly, i.e. roll back lightly into what you've just painted, using full-length light strokes in ONE direction. Your technique is too arbitrary and will result in a patchy finish.

Sir I want to put such a paint for ceiling that it looks as if its of some very smooth or velvet quality one and not any ordinary plastic paint. Which one according to you will be the best
I would paint such walls with a brush not a roller, pretty much all rollers will leave tracks on a curved surface. Rad rollers with a long pile head may help a bit and give better results than a wider roller but brushing would get a nicer finish.
A point to make here is that there good and bad roller heads, buying a good quality sheepskin roller head is a sound investment, on the other hand buying a cheap synthetic roller head sold in DIY shops is false economy. cont...

I'm starting mine today, ugh. I did them a few years ago and it was a nightmare since it's an apartment and were very thirsty ceilings. Lol. Hopefully they wont be as bad today, they're sealed now. I did buy the pink ceiling paint that dries white since I had hard time seeing where I was and if it covered enough. Hope it does dry white hahaha

I have a thick rag roller where it’s so furry the material overhangs the end of the roller meaning you can cut into corners with it too rather than pissing about with a 4 inch brush

I painted professionally for many years and I found by using a 5 gallon pail paint screen and two people to apply the paint is the best way to cover a large area real fast. One person is literally throwing the paint up onto the ceiling with a rough coat. And immediately afterwards someone comes along and Smooths it down. No roller marks no dry spots always perfect.

Yes always, as when it comes to cutting in, it is always easier to cut in straight in front of you than upside down if you painted the ceiling afterwards. You also risk getting paint on the walls after you have finished them as well the other way around. Always paint the ceiling, walls and then woodwork last as a rule. Unless there are different circumstances like certain things are not being painted. Sorry If I answered instead but I see it has been a long time with no answer. Hope that helped, and I am also going to start making my own videos in the near future as I have wanted to for a very long time now. So please feel free to subscribe to me and then make any suggestions on what you want to learn and I will still start making the videos based upon what is requested the most, but I should be able to make a fair few videos quickly as I will take the camera to work and go from there. I will also be advising on what tools are best for the job as well as people go ahead and buy a £3 paint brush which actually makes the job worse as the bristles tend to be bad and spread etc, so it is so important to have good tools, and keep them clean and looked after and they will end up cheaper than keeping on buying the cheap stuff and a lot more professional finish.

Yes, paint the ceilings first. You can cut the ceiling in, and do not have to worry about going a quarter or half inch on the walls. Also, this gives you a nice, sealed corner to achieve the best possible edge when cutting the walls to the ceiling. Always aplly two coats when apllying your top coat. Always tape off the baseboards with at least 1 inch tape. This will eliminate any roller spatter on the baseboards. Beginners or semi-beginners will tend to drip or move the roller too fast, thus making spatter.
3 trips to the paint is still 3 trips to the paint, IMO

Great tip Hugo. I'm painting a 600 sq. ft. bedroom, with 10' ceilings. I just started priming, and will try your advice. The primer I'm using is Kilz PVA (about $40 per 5 gallons). I mixed in one gallon of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer. Coverage is pretty good, but I can still kinda see where the drywall mudding was done. Do I need another coat of primer? BTW, this is new drywall. I subscribed.

Hugo Correa I am sorry but never advise to never thin the paint, most water based always need thinning to avoid getting thick edges and uneven surfaces as mentioned earlier. Also to paint bare plaster ceiling you need to thin the paint a lot called a mist coat. Even with the ceiling you are doing now it needs thinning to a certain degree or if it doesn't you are using a very poor quality paint. or it will just congeal over the filler and flake off over time.. I am sorry but ask any pro painter about water based paints and 80% of the time it needs thinning, the same with oil based paints a touch of white spirits is also often needed to let the paint flow so you do not get paint build up, which lead to runs with oil formula, well I have even seen runs in emulsion when used to thick and not laid off.
Normally you will be painting the walls after the ceiling as well Rob so a small amount of paint will never be a problem, but if you just go slowely around the edges and use a brush to cut in so you don't get to close to the wall with the roller anyway. If you are not painting the walls you can just be very gentle around the edges as said, carry a wet sponge and water with you at all times and most can be wiped away (clean water) or just simply cover the wall area with a plastic but it is more time consuming and costs more money.
