  • In this video, Rhonda discusses:
    • How almost 99% of chemicals introduced to the food suply since the year 2000 were green-lighted by the food & chemical companies rather than properly reviewed by the FDA
    • How common chemicals found in processed food affect health: Nitrites, Potassium Bromate, Propyl Paraben, Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), Tertiary Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), & Artificial Colors (e.g., Red #40, Yellow #5, Blue #1)
    • Whether "ultra-processed" food more dangerous than processed food
    • Why just because something says "BPA-free" doesn't mean it's safe

Before 2023, my diet basically consisted of processed foods. For many years, I was basically lived off bread, ramen noodles, boxed macaroni, hot dogs, baked beans, microwavable food, take out food and sugary/salty snacks.
I was barely eating any vegetables or fruit daily. Like I don't think I was even considering it either. And as the years went, I see thingsike my sleep get worse. Pains would start to dveewon my body, I was depressed and dependent on sugar for dopamine.
Until years down the line, it became apparent that I suffered from some autoimmune condition. As I now had developed food intolerances, due to the bad eating and stress I had for many years. Now I'm in the process of eating only whole foods and figuring out all the conditions I have to I've a better life.

In general Europe has far better, safer, and less chemical laden food than we do. I read articles talking about heavy metals in flax and cocoa, emailed FDA and asking where I can get more information and was pretty much blown off. My first response was "we don't review supplements." Obviously that person didn't know flax was a food. When I replied flax is a food, I then got a response that we have no further information than that. I asked why this information was only behind pay firewalls from independent companies and why don't you have it, and never got a response.

As a fellow nutrition scientist, I came to this video seeking vindication and instead found it to be meandering and lacking in quality evidence. If we are going to win the fight against these companies, we NEED to do better. Saying "X has been linked to cancer" or focusing on correlative studies is really pretty meaningless when we both know that could just mean in vitro studies that are not necessarily clinically meaningful. We can't be critical of those who argue red meat is bad for you on the basis of low quality epidemiological and rodent model studies, and then turn around and use that same approach against ultra-processed foods.

Why is there so much ADDED sugar in everything, even bread. That's just crazy
Email, text, tweet or phone your favorite producer of poison and let them know consumers want less salt, oils and sugars in their products.

You are mistaken that consumers don't want them. They make the food tastier and last longer. This increases demand for the products. Think about it: adding things makes the product more expensive, not less. So clearly, if it adds to the cost, then the only way a profit-oriented firm would go for it, is if adding those things increased the demand for them. Now you might not want them. And neither do I. But the general population is either ignorant or is willing to sacrifice well-being for taste and having a longer expiry date on their food.

That was a long scary list 😅 Recently, I noticed the coconut milk I regularly buy, has a thick and consistent texture and it doesn't separate when it's in the fridge. I checked the E numbers and apparently they started adding Xanthan and Guar gum to it. Then I noticed there's more packaged foods that are utilizing them. This is in Germany. It's worrying how these additives are creeping up everywhere. Makes me want to only buy from the fresh section and not anything that's packaged or has more ingredients list than the item itself. Living alone makes it much harder to cook, but it's an effort to have a healthier life.

Good video about a very important topic. Many of the health problems seen in our modern world can be traced back to our diet, for sure. I'm speaking as a pharmacist and as someone who studied food science in undergrad. I completely agree that the evidence for certain compounds being harmful is pretty strong: certain food dyes, even PFAS now. However, I do think we need recognize that some processed foods are actually quite healthy: hummus, olive oil, pickles and other fermented veggies like kimchi, coffee (in moderation), tofu, Greek yogurt, etc. So we should probably limit the discussion to processed foods that contain x, y, z compounds, or classes of compounds, or ultraprocessed foods like you mention. Lastly, a lot of these compounds may be carcinogenic or harmful in animal studies when given at very high doses. But at the levels put in foods, they could be completely safe. In our current world, we are reliant on many of these chemicals - particularly preservatives - to make sure food does not spoil to ensure a reliable food supply for massive world population.

But it's quiet obvious now, we put in so many different substances in our body that is not recognized by it as food. It's unknown substances that will interfere with out inner chemistry, nothing goes under the radar, of course something is going to go wrong.

The first one should be seed oils then sugar then bleached flour
Regarding cured meats you see other information suggesting that the nitrates and nitrites are precursors to nitric oxide and they're identical compounds found in vegetables and are praised for their benefits, and when you claim ohh its the antioxidants in plants that block nitrosamines we ignore the fact that those plant compounds are not very bioavailable
I'm not convinced, as long as someone keeps telling me to eat LEAN meat, I know they don't truly understand science and the vast importance of healthy animal fats and I don't put a lot of weight on their discussions, bc they don't seem to understand the importance of insulin anytime I hear lean meat I know they are a high carb believer and a proponent of the starvation diet with lots of colorful plants and carbs bc where are you going to get your healthy fats with lean meat that's just nonsense and easy to see through
Sorry but I've heard her opinions on carnivore and I'm not really impressed with her science It seems to be all epidemiology based and that's just problematic when you want to form solid causation like quoting places with the most centurions lol turns out a lot of the deaths in these places go unreported

Moderation is key for many of us. Eat healthy whole foods 80% of the time and have treats if you have the discipline and do not have eating disorders. UPF's are terrible, but to live a little and have a cheeseburger and chocolate once in awhile in moderation isn't going to kill you. Stressing about food 24/7 not good.

Disagreed. The more hyperpalatable food you have, the less tasty normal food will look to you, and the higher your desire will be for those foods. There is no doubt in my mind that the hyperpalatable food is addictive, and research seems to support this. Now imagine someone wanted to stop smoking or pinning h*roin. You wouldn't tell him "one needle plunge a week is okay", same with cigarettes. I think that this food is not an exception.

This is what happens when you have a political system that allows big business to shape policy and in essence become the government. That means there will never be a restriction on what goes into what can be called food. The essence of making a profit is to commodify the ingredients. Commodify means make the base ingredients as cheap as possible so then it becomes a race to substitute the expensive ingredients with something cheaper i.e. say palm oil instead of butter or flavoring because processing strips original flavor. It goes on and on. This doesn't happen in Europe because the governments there shapes policy for health not profit first.
