- In this video, Rhonda discusses:
• How almost 99% of chemicals introduced to the food suply since the year 2000 were green-lighted by the food & chemical companies rather than properly reviewed by the FDA
• How common chemicals found in processed food affect health: Nitrites, Potassium Bromate, Propyl Paraben, Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), Tertiary Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), & Artificial Colors (e.g., Red #40, Yellow #5, Blue #1)
• Whether "ultra-processed" food more dangerous than processed food
• Why just because something says "BPA-free" doesn't mean it's safe

For everyone reading this, finding the banned book called “the hidden herbs” by anette ray should be your top priority
Thank you for this. It’s a battle trying to protect our children from all the poison hidden in delicious looking foods.
Before 2023, my diet basically consisted of processed foods. For many years, I was basically lived off bread, ramen noodles, boxed macaroni, hot dogs, baked beans, microwavable food, take out food and sugary/salty snacks.
I was barely eating any vegetables or fruit daily. Like I don't think I was even considering it either. And as the years went, I see thingsike my sleep get worse. Pains would start to dveewon my body, I was depressed and dependent on sugar for dopamine.
Until years down the line, it became apparent that I suffered from some autoimmune condition. As I now had developed food intolerances, due to the bad eating and stress I had for many years. Now I'm in the process of eating only whole foods and figuring out all the conditions I have to I've a better life.
College student diet.
Sadly if I understand Rhonda right, it might be too late for you. Those toxic chemicals have built up in your body. She really doesn't offer any good way of detoxifying a body for this. i think you have to start all this as an infant.... I think it is like climate change, we are already doomed.
@@jimdandy8996 oh yeah that's definitely what it was lol. Crazy thing I could of been feeling much better years prior. If I just attempted to cook some meat and veggies. But I think the processed food had my brain so messed up. That I was scared of even attempting to cook some real food smh.
The scary thing is how many people you would tell about this and their reaction is straight up apathy.
To be fair, even the "healthy" food in this country isn't the best for us nowadays with all the drugs and medicines pumped into animals and chemicals sprayed on the plants.
Am I the only who is enraged at the fact that we are not protected from these poisons by our own Government? (I read an article that Ireland recently banned the practice of spraying ROUNDUP on wheat while it's being harvested-works as a desiccant) Still doing it here though. : ( Love your channel Rhonda.
@@spockboy the government wants people to be stupid and weak im not at all surprised

In general Europe has far better, safer, and less chemical laden food than we do. I read articles talking about heavy metals in flax and cocoa, emailed FDA and asking where I can get more information and was pretty much blown off. My first response was "we don't review supplements." Obviously that person didn't know flax was a food. When I replied flax is a food, I then got a response that we have no further information than that. I asked why this information was only behind pay firewalls from independent companies and why don't you have it, and never got a response.
@@Joseph1NJ Look up Environmental Working Group (EWG). They might have some of the info you're looking for.
The FDA is not doing its job!
They do whatever Big Pharma and Big Food representatives tell the FDA burreaucrats what to do.
It's paid big corp bucks not to!🎉😮😢
When they receive almost 50% (or more) of their funding from the corps that they are suppose to be objectively evaluating it's near impossible for them to do their job.

I bet you Rhonda enjoys Chick-fil-A a few times a week
God bless you Rhonda, gives me hope that your out there raising awareness
id be very interested to hear a deeper dive into nitrates/nitrites, nitrosamines and preservatives and how exactly they are damaging
Same!
Now i feel like everything i dont grow or raise myself is going to end me 😔
Yeah I live now on nothing but beef, bacon, butter, eggs, and EV olive oil... I guess I could grow some olives and raise chickens..... But I definitely don't have room for cows and pigs😅
It's not a feeling, it's a reality brother.
In my country, McD, KFC, Texas Chicken and a butt load of other fast foods are thriving. People still go non stop.
I think you mean ultra processed foods. We all eat processed foods and have been doing so for millennia. But UPFs are only a few decades old and the extent of their baleful effects on health became conclusive in the last few years. But thank you for highlighting this crucial issue!
Obviously.......
Excellent and complete report. Funny how an ad for Stauffer's frozen was an ad previous to watching Dr. Rhonda the second time.
I just started making my own coffee creamer with sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream and am never going back to toxic creamers EVER.
Just add milk and sugar to your coffee like a normal person dude
follow up to this would be nice to hear on how much exercise, sauna, detox foods, ect, can offset these effects
There's a huge problem with supplements and medications as they often contain additives that you can't avoid, like titanium dioxide, artificial flavors and colors, sugars, sweeteners.
6:49 - 7:23 the reason ADD is through the roof!
As a fellow nutrition scientist, I came to this video seeking vindication and instead found it to be meandering and lacking in quality evidence. If we are going to win the fight against these companies, we NEED to do better. Saying "X has been linked to cancer" or focusing on correlative studies is really pretty meaningless when we both know that could just mean in vitro studies that are not necessarily clinically meaningful. We can't be critical of those who argue red meat is bad for you on the basis of low quality epidemiological and rodent model studies, and then turn around and use that same approach against ultra-processed foods.
Agreed would like some more in depth, valid evidence. But these videos are made to be accessible and pack in as much info as possible.
Processed food manufacturers need to hear from consumers that less ADDED chemicals, sugar, oil and salt is wanted in their food products.
Why is there so much ADDED sugar in everything, even bread. That's just crazy
Email, text, tweet or phone your favorite producer of poison and let them know consumers want less salt, oils and sugars in their products.
Let their customer service department know that all the extra added salt, oil and sugar is not necessary or desired and is causing health issues.
Reduce or eliminate highly processed food from your diet if you can.
Or read the label and stop buying it.
Those companies don’t care. They work with farma (spelt wrong on purpose) to keep us unwell. In order to make money.
You are mistaken that consumers don't want them. They make the food tastier and last longer. This increases demand for the products. Think about it: adding things makes the product more expensive, not less. So clearly, if it adds to the cost, then the only way a profit-oriented firm would go for it, is if adding those things increased the demand for them. Now you might not want them. And neither do I. But the general population is either ignorant or is willing to sacrifice well-being for taste and having a longer expiry date on their food.
@@mrmacguffin6886 If the consumers don't know they are there how do you know they want them? If they are ignorant and think it's just food, how do you know they know that it's the chemicals doing it and not just thinking that's how it taste?
vote with your money. Stop buying food like products
I agree that a whole food diet is the best way. I’ve been wfpb since I turned 50, no hot flashes, nothing at all. Feeling good inside and out, it works.
You are a national treasure Rhonda
I tried eating unprocessed chicken once but biting through the feathers was more than I could deal with.

Thank you Rhonda! Anyone IN THE [USA] watching this should see CLEARLY how IMPORTANT it is that RFK - Jr. be in charge of the health in "our great country". I live in a foreign country (thank god) where the INDUSTRIAL - FOOD, MILITARY - OR - HOLLYWOOD (INCLUDING DISNEY/ABC NEWS) doesn't RUN MY GOVERNMENT!! So here in the Republic of Panama my food sources are not contaminated by the MASSIVE POWER of all of those "old brick buildings" at Washington D.C. or - Lobbyist which want their party to CONTINUE RUNNING THE USA ... and BURY INTELIGENT INFORMATION such as what this podcast represents - [inteligent information] , problem is Rhonda there are tooooo many IGNORANT PEOPLE in the USA whose "source of information" is Hollywood and the corrupt media... Hopefully the party supporting RFK Jr. Will be elected and many good things will happen (WORLD WIDE) Plus the HEALTH IN THE USA will improve CONSIDERABLY!
Nuts and seeds NOT roasted in oils.
It's so sad to see so many people clearly poisoned these days. Food companies need to be held to account and toxic additives/foods need to be banned. People clearly lack the knowledge or ability to self-regulate.
This raises so many questions that just cannot be answered, but how about this one. Drinking out of yeti vs plastic - can you tell us anything about evidence of benefits? What happens to water that arrives in plastic containers that is then transferred to glass or other inert containers. Do we know anything?
PBA is one of the who knows how many chemicals in plastic. I don't think it can be avoided, nor do I think it's reasonable to try, with one exception, cooking. I avoid heating or cooking anything in the microwave with plastic. I use frozen veggies, but I remove them from the bag and cook in ceramic covered dishes. Hopeful that helps, but who knows really.
That was a long scary list 😅 Recently, I noticed the coconut milk I regularly buy, has a thick and consistent texture and it doesn't separate when it's in the fridge. I checked the E numbers and apparently they started adding Xanthan and Guar gum to it. Then I noticed there's more packaged foods that are utilizing them. This is in Germany. It's worrying how these additives are creeping up everywhere. Makes me want to only buy from the fresh section and not anything that's packaged or has more ingredients list than the item itself. Living alone makes it much harder to cook, but it's an effort to have a healthier life.
I always heard it put, "buy food around the perimeter of the grocery and don't go down the aisles." Probably better to go to a Farmer's Market, too.
I had these warts growing on my hand, I went carnivore for a bit to clean up my diet, and slowly I've added in things that feel great for me, mostly whole and healthier foods. After about a year, those warts have disappeared off my hand. Kinda crazy.
Nitric Oxide, precursors, food sources, and a clear understanding of their bio-chemical pathways would be revealing!
I wish i found this Dr. When i was younger !!
A total eclectic in her profession
No youtube and she was not born yet.
I guess the best way to go is whole foods especially organic
Eat organic if you’d like but the difference between organic and non-organic food hasn’t been proven have any significant health benefits. It definitely will impact your wallet though.
Your overall diet is far more significant than buying organic food to impact you.
Just eat real food or you'll pay the price. If you do eat processed crap, just be mindful of the amount. And pay attention to the symptoms it gives you.
organic hasn’t actually been shown to more notably healthy than nonorganic. Mostly a marketing tactic
I eat whole foods and it's helpful but soon I'll crush a big box of cinnamon toast crunch cereal....I'm addicted Ma! Help
The people who eat processed foods, at least the worst kinds, do not seek content like this. It's as much of an addiction as anything, many people would not know what to do with good advice, sadly. As much as I would love to see this country get healthy and way less fat, I have my doubts about any forthcoming change.
You claim that people who are addicted to processed foods choose to be ignorant of healthy eating. Then you say that many people do not heed good advice. Which is it, are they unaware of better practices of eating or are they choosing to ignore it? Part of your statement also makes it sound like the addiction willfully prevents people from learning about healthy eating... What a strange comment and even stranger that people are giving it a thumbsup lol
Defund the FDA.
Thanks Dr. Patrick! 😊
Most of that dollar store candy has titanium dioxide, littke nano particle action for the childrens DNA, how loving
Thanks Rhonda! I'll just have an extra portion of broccoli sprouts instead.
Good video about a very important topic. Many of the health problems seen in our modern world can be traced back to our diet, for sure. I'm speaking as a pharmacist and as someone who studied food science in undergrad. I completely agree that the evidence for certain compounds being harmful is pretty strong: certain food dyes, even PFAS now. However, I do think we need recognize that some processed foods are actually quite healthy: hummus, olive oil, pickles and other fermented veggies like kimchi, coffee (in moderation), tofu, Greek yogurt, etc. So we should probably limit the discussion to processed foods that contain x, y, z compounds, or classes of compounds, or ultraprocessed foods like you mention. Lastly, a lot of these compounds may be carcinogenic or harmful in animal studies when given at very high doses. But at the levels put in foods, they could be completely safe. In our current world, we are reliant on many of these chemicals - particularly preservatives - to make sure food does not spoil to ensure a reliable food supply for massive world population.
I felt so sick, had candida which wouldn't go away, extreme brain fog, pms, depression (still have but it was so much worse), fatigue. I had tried so many diets etc. Until I figured out I was reacting to additives. It just seemed so weird that such small substances could affect the body so much. But it's quiet obvious now, we put in so many different substances in our body that is not recognized by it as food. It's unknown substances that will interfere with out inner chemistry, nothing goes under the radar, of course something is going to go wrong.
Chris van Tulleken has written a fantastic book where he presents a lot of the science that has been done in this field. Even though he tackles a gloomy topic he does it with wit, humour and empathy. It is simultaneiusly an enlightening and infuriating read. Rhonda Patrick does a good job here, but reading Chris van Tulleken's book packs a more habit changing punch imo
❤ this wonderful super woman so much life changing education 😊
The longer you help people live, the longer they will help the narcissists make things worse.
"Yes but the USA is the best country in the world and so is our food" - Americans, probably.
Is everyone waiting on Scientific studies to tell them how to think. Clean up your diet and you will feel better, look better, sleep better... the list goes on.
Interestingly I think the people who notice huge differences are those who are in a real bad place to start. I keep in shape, always have and eat pretty well. Any deviation to a sweet or two doesn't effect how I seem to feel for me at all. I feel no different. Exercise data still trumps diet hands down and I just don't think 2 or 3 cheat meals a week make a scrap of difference to my longevity at all.
Titanium dioxide is a very stable inorganic compound that should not be bioactive in any way. A lot of the preservative are quite likely to be very problematic.
I would have like to have seen examples of the foods that have these chemicals in them as you’re talking about them.
All of the above mentioned packaged foods here on every supermarket shelves contains these chemicals whether from American processed food giants or foreign made, it's unfortunate anything that goes through any processing causes long term chronic health issues...
The fact she emphasized lean meat lead me to believe she still has some misunderstandings about fat consumption
Processed food is not food. It's an edible food product. Whole food is food. Anything with more than 5 ingredients is not food, it's a product. Also the point on PFAS needs to be understood, if you have metabolism/hormones issues remove plastic and fragrance from your life.
Thanks Rhonda!
Some of the compounds to increase shelf life are also found in things like rubber and vinyl mats.
I don’t understand the obesity problem.
EAT REAL GD FOOD, not shit that is passed through a drive through window.
COOK, starting with 1 Ingredient foods, not franken processed foods.
Health and fitness require work.
Don’t do the work and you will FU your greatest asset ie health
Is there a list of all sources you could provide? Thank you!
I wonder how healthy our fresh foods are when they're being grown in 3rd world nations. Who knows what they're using as fertilizer and what contaminants might be in the water from irrigation. For example, our so-called fresh tomatoes are bland and have a texture like cardboard. Our supermarket fresh foods just don't have the rich favor of home grown varieties.
I tried so hard to keep my son away from processed food. My son could eat by himself with no problem. My friend who gave processed food to his daughter resulted in her daughter having eating disorder and then she can’t live without processed food almost like an addiction. Those kid juice packets don’t taste like juice but more like sugar water with orange flavorings and designed to have kids hooked on them.
so if I find a processed food that does not contain any of these known harmful chemicals, then it should be good
very useful information shared...thanks Dr
ok so where can I just buy food that doesn't have all this junk in it?
organic seeds for a garden and/or greenhouse, organic farm tables at a farmer's market
Paleo is a whole foods diet.
Just saw your Smoothie recipe video, will be dropping the banana and the beet powder! I do Kale, Kefir, blueberries, spirulina and water, will try the Avo and a touch of moringa.
Thank you, Doc.
Big focus on plastic water bottles but what about these cups we wash them in hot water and then let it dry but something tells me it's just as bad
The first one should be seed oils then sugar then bleached flour
Regarding cured meats you see other information suggesting that the nitrates and nitrites are precursors to nitric oxide and they're identical compounds found in vegetables and are praised for their benefits, and when you claim ohh its the antioxidants in plants that block nitrosamines we ignore the fact that those plant compounds are not very bioavailable
I'm not convinced, as long as someone keeps telling me to eat LEAN meat, I know they don't truly understand science and the vast importance of healthy animal fats and I don't put a lot of weight on their discussions, bc they don't seem to understand the importance of insulin anytime I hear lean meat I know they are a high carb believer and a proponent of the starvation diet with lots of colorful plants and carbs bc where are you going to get your healthy fats with lean meat that's just nonsense and easy to see through
Sorry but I've heard her opinions on carnivore and I'm not really impressed with her science It seems to be all epidemiology based and that's just problematic when you want to form solid causation like quoting places with the most centurions lol turns out a lot of the deaths in these places go unreported
But the news keeps saying ultra processed foods are healthy!
Don’t a lot of these whole meats have these dyes in them?
You would think I wouldn’t, but . . .

Don't think you can avoid it completely. But minimizing your exposure to these is key
Can't go wrong eating real food, in small amounts, infrequently. Eat fruit local and season.
Moderation is key for many of us. Eat healthy whole foods 80% of the time and have treats if you have the discipline and do not have eating disorders. UPF's are terrible, but to live a little and have a cheeseburger and chocolate once in awhile in moderation isn't going to kill you. Stressing about food 24/7 not good.
Disagreed. The more hyperpalatable food you have, the less tasty normal food will look to you, and the higher your desire will be for those foods. There is no doubt in my mind that the hyperpalatable food is addictive, and research seems to support this. Now imagine someone wanted to stop smoking or pinning h*roin. You wouldn't tell him "one needle plunge a week is okay", same with cigarettes. I think that this food is not an exception.
It definitely depends on the person, but having a beer or cigar once or twice a month to relax isn’t going to significantly change your lifespan. Some people can handle that, some can’t.
Heroin is a bit extreme….
@@mrmacguffin6886actually when people are trying to quit cigarettes or hard drugs. People do tell them to just have one hit or something to that degree. Because you can't just quit cold turkey, you have to ween off the problem. So that your body doesn't fall into absolute shock.
I eat animal products mostly and berries and sometimes broccoli. Once a month I treat myself to something fun like some doughnuts or cake or some kind of pastry because life is worth living. Better than drinking alcohol.
"Stressing about food".... the only time anyone would stress about food is junk food
This is what happens when you have a political system that allows big business to shape policy and in essence become the government. That means there will never be a restriction on what goes into what can be called food. The essence of making a profit is to commodify the ingredients. Commodify means make the base ingredients as cheap as possible so then it becomes a race to substitute the expensive ingredients with something cheaper i.e. say palm oil instead of butter or flavoring because processing strips original flavor. It goes on and on. This doesn't happen in Europe because the governments there shapes policy for health not profit first.

It is the hypocrisy to even call it food. Just by removal the word "food" and replace it with "product" should help... You could it the product, but better to it food.
It’s crazy no one here is talking about “the hidden herbs” by Anette Ray…
GRAS, or Generally Regarded As Safe, is extremely misleading and frankly deceiving. If you see an ingredient on a food label that you don't have in your kitchen, think twice before buying it, research the ingredient, and decide accordingly.
