    You can trust good old Scotty Kilmer! I tried this on my 1999 Ford Ranger. Check engine light was on. She was losing power. I had the ignition coils replaced. Still losing power. I poured the lacquer thinner into a 1/2 tank of gas. It broke free at around 120 miles highway driving. It was like a horse breaking into a gallop from a trot! Believe me it works! 👍👍👍👍

    Sometimes I think Scotty must be full of it but I tried lacquer cleaner a few years ago in a F-150 and it gave great results. A month before the required smog test the check engine light came on. It seemed like a good time to try the lacquer cleaner. In short, it worked. The light went out, the truck passed with flying colors, and it's run perfectly and passed every smog inspection for the past 6 years or so. It's anecdotal but I'm convinced it did some good. Still the original converter and sensor after 120k miles. Scotty called this right.

    There's a reason there are 4+ million views for this on Scotty Kilmer's video. I tried this last night on my '99 VW GTI Vr6. One gallon thinner to just over half a tank of gas (about 8-9 gallons). Drove at highway speeds until the gas tank had a gallon left (Approximately 160 miles or so). Filled with high octane gas, which my car requires. The moment after the fill-up and starting the car back up, light came off. Much better vehicle performance as well. At about 108k miles. We'll see how long this lasts. I do know it cleaned the crap out of it.

      @@andymedina323 It worked but light came back eventually. In this last round I used Seafoam when the tank was full. Once it got to a quarter tank, I added Cataclean. I ran it near empty and refilled. Haven't seen the check engine light in at least 6,000 miles and it's running very smooth. I did the lacquer thinner two or three times before this last effort, so I think it maybe just needed a lot of cleaning. The car is 24 years old, so.

    Lots of people commenting have difficulty paying attention. Scotty said this method works for a clogged cat and it’s worth trying before paying a lot of money for a new one. Eric the car guy said his cat was NOT clogged. There was no reason for Eric to run the lacquer thinner through the cat. The whole point of this method is to clean out a clogged cat and to avoid having to remove the cat from the car. If you do want to remove the cat THEN Scotty said use dish soap in a bucket and let the cat soak overnight to clean a clogged catalytic converter.

I took truck to smog after canceling check engine light. I had to drive truck until monitors reset and took truck in before light came back. It passed, although the hydro carbons were a little high. • @ThomasFromTN
      @ThomasFromTN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting that you leap to presumption that calling someone "old" translates to someone being "clueless." There was a time, back in the day, when someone "old" (elderly, senior, etc.) was venerated for being considered having experienced life and learned ALOT from it.
      In the military, there is a custom of calling the unit commander "The Old Man" as a sign of respect...in "da hood" calling someone "OG" is intended to reflect giving props to someone who's learned how to cope with life sufficient to have attained an advanced age.
      Can't help but feel...this vlogger may have been expressing disrespect of Scotty Kilmer by describing him as "old" - then, again, he may not have meant it as disrespectful, at all. As for you...you're not the first person I've encountered who strongly insinuates that "old" must automatically translate as something not altogether positive. Interesting.

    In principle catalytic converters should never go bad. From a pure chemistry point of view the definition of a catalyst is something that promotes or speeds up a chemical reaction without itself being consumed. So the metals in the catalytic converter under normal operation should theoretically last forever. So really there are just two ways cats go bad, one is from actual physical damage. From my understanding this usually occurs when someone drives with a misfire which basically dumps raw fuel into the cat causing it to overheat and melt internally. No way to fix this. The second way cats go "bad" is by getting gunked up with carbon by doing too much low RPM city driving. The cat just doesn't get up to proper operating temp often enough to burn off the carbon build up. The solution to that is to take a long highway drive in low gear keeping the RPMs above 3500 for say 15 - 30 minutes to burn off the carbon build up. I've seen that work many times. I guess if the Lacquer thinner thing works, it would be because it effectively causes the engine to run extremely rich causing some of the fuel / lacquer to go unburned in the cylinder and makes it's way to the cat where it ignites and gets burned and heats up the cat enough to burn off the carbon. I'd worry however that you could overheat the cat like that and physically damage it permanently.

    Thumbs up, if only for whispering "That's a joke" after saying it's no big deal to get lacquer thinner on your paint. (in all actuality, a couple drops splash on auto paint isn't a deal, because it'll evaporate before softening the finish....you wouldn't want to soak a painted part in LT, or scrub the surface if it's wet with it). Anyway, I've watched a number of these vids, so want as many opinions with as many different engines as possible. Wife's Subaru Crosstrek throws the P0420 and I'm likely going to try this trick. On to your follow-up video. Thanks.

    However, most car manufacturers do not recommend using lacquer thinner because it can damage any plastic or rubber parts, which includes valve covers, gaskets, and seals. Damage to these parts can cost more to replace than the catalytic converter depending on the model of the car.

    I'm 71 and worked in a body shop when I was in my early 20s. Sometimes I rode my Honda 90 on the dirt backroads to and from work. I just made it to work one morning low on gas and didn't have access to gasoline. We had a 55-gallon drum of lacquer thinner with a hand pump. I put a little in the tank to get to a gas station and the bike didn't seem to run any differently than it did on gasoline. You mentioned that lacquer thinner will not harm automotive paint. GM used to paint their cars with acrylic lacquer. Lacquer thinner will melt those early automotive finishes. One time my painter's helper laid a lacquer thinner-soaked rag on a customer's car roof that was in for repair. I had to repaint the customer's roof.

    The whole idea is to have this aggessive concoction ( 1 part thinner to 9-10 parts gasoline) in your tank for as short a period as possible......drive the car immediately at highway speeds to get the stuff to do it's job a ....but .... also to get it OUT ( drive the 150 niles or so to get the half-tank level at the start, down to nearly empty, and then refill with gas), and not leave it there a long time where it can harm stuff like injector seals. Why not follow the suggestions AS GIVEN ????

      What is a Stoddard solvent?
      Stoddard solvent is a mixture of numerous hydrocarbons derived by refining crude oil. It is a petroleum distillate with a boiling range of 154-202°C and a flashpoint of 38-60°C.
      Stoddard solvent is commonly referred to as dry cleaning safety solvent, naphtha safety solvent, petroleum solvent, PD-680, varnoline, and spotting naphtha. It also goes by the registered trade names Texsolve S and Varsol 1.
