Thank you nosoapradiopolka for uploading this, a happy reminder of being a teenager and watching this in the 1980s, the champagne moment being from 33:00 onwards as Clive joined Ol' Blue Eyes, Elvis and Sid Vicious in the pantheon of memorable (for all sorts of reasons) 'My Way' renditions - in English and especially Japanese!
Ah watching the final minute of this today after learning of Clive's passing brought a tear to my eye. Almost expected 'Çlive James - 1939 - 2019' to fade up on the frozen frame.
Just finished watching all the Clive James in and Postcard series thats is currently on TH-cam and this video is literally the last one in my playlist Clive James - 1939 - 2019 aftering singing My Way would have been the absolute perfect ending
BBC News sent me here too, for which I am grateful. I was in Japan probably around the same time as James; I do not understand Japanese and I had exactly the same experience in Tokyo station; I too bought something unknown from the Bento boy on the train. I had not realised in advance that the train did not really accept luggage; any substantial case had to be sent on behind in a van by road. I unfortunately had mine with me. Oh dear. A really surreal experience. I have not been back, shame, so I do not know whether evolution has occurred.
You should buy bento and beer in a supermarket or konbini Outside of the station!! It is much cheaper and you will probably have a lot more choice. Plus ... you can easily bring a suitcase onto the Shinkansen ... just keep it between your legs, in the rack above you or in the pathway in the middle of the train and say "Sumimasen!!" and make some space, every time someone tries to pass ... In Japan you have the right to make mistakes ... as long as you say: "Sorry!!" ^^
I know its rather an old portrait, BUT prejudice is rather depressing in such an intelligent and indeed, brilliant man; but prejudice about the Japanese is one of the "wests" permitted secret pleasures.
@@frankgrace1537 Oh but I have and many many times - if you have been there, which I doubt, and think Clive james views are neither stereotyped nor prejudiced you havent been paying attention.
@@deanedge5988 I think you were the one not paying attention. Did you read his Flying Visits or Brrm Brrm? He clearly respected the Japanese people, and their culture, and the butt of the joke is always the aging, overweight Kid from Kogarah.
@@frankgrace1537 I have Japanese family and have being going there every year for several decades. Its unfortunate that you resort to abuse in responding and tells me all I need to know about you.
Clive certainly did do it his way and no one has ever come close.
such a nice documentary on Japan by the imitable Clive James. His respect for others and sharp sense of humour is very endearing.
Love Clive singing ‘My Way’ at the end. He’s much missed, RIP.
The song said it all at the end, rip and thankyou
he was the stephan fry of the 80's , the mastery of language and humour is way above anything we see today
But not sleazy as SF can be. ❤

You obviously haven’t been to Nippon. Good. Keep it that way.
