@@jimbolimbodimbo That's exactly what I did with Dakota (My Sonic OC). His Chao, Konata is a Light-Chao, opposite of Shadow's chao which is a Dark-Chao.
My main OC actually has a pet Chaos. No, I didn’t misspell Chao, I mean as in the water monster from SA1. Is that overpowered? Maybe. Thing is, that OC does most of the fighting himself, so the literal DEITY at his disposal goes underused
I do wish that Sega could dive a bit more into the OC idea. They could easily do that for a mini game like SonicDash, where all the characters share sonic powers. That way they wouldn’t have to animate a bunch of different powers and just give us a character creator.
@@Kitsuna_Gacha I said, dive more into it. It’s a good idea, but the execution with sonic forces wasn’t that great. A mini game like SonicDash has a little bit more wiggle room for error, and can allow fans to play around a bit more.
That's what I did with my Sonic OC, I never wanted to make my OC a hedgehog or actually putting myself in the actual series. But put a created character in the things I love.
The first OC I made was a hedgehog. I’ve dived into other kinds of species like spiders, falcons, rabbits, stuff like that. But my first OC has just been…he’s just kinda a part of my life now I guess

Dakota the Arctic Wolf (My Sonic OC) Senko the Panther (My friend's OC) Kanae the Lycan (Dakota's Love Interest OC) Like you don't really see these animals often or at all in the series, but it's nice to have variety.

The result came out great. But i HIGHLY disagree on prohibiting people making a hedgehog. There is nothing wrong in creating a hedgehog, the problem is that they are over-used, making them difficult to stand out or NOT to look similar to other characters like Sonic, Shadow and Silver (The three that people inspire to make their hedgehog most of the time) So fellas, don't listen to him on that (Sorry man xD), but beware, making an hedgehog look different from the ones you know is hard, so i suggest to do your best to stand out. Overall, i like the video, great job, left a like and liked the character you came up to. Does he has a name? If he dosen't, i don't know why but i named him Mirth. Cheers from Brazil.

I've actually made a few in the past - and some redesigns of already existing characters. My two big ones are Pearl the Platypus and Max the Kangaroo (the latter pretty much being a cowboy). The Sonic art style is a lot of fun to work with, and if you're trying to experiment with character art or just starting I definitely see a lot of potential in it. I do a lot of other things for characters too - I've made some D&D stylized stuff as well. But I enjoy a lot of different designs. It's cool to see other people dedicated to making stuff like this too. Also, sick OCs by the way! I like the designs you showed off.

Ah yes. OC. My favorite past time. I got to say i agree with you on the hedgehog part. All these hedgehogs running around and half of them just look like re colors and powers/abilities are important at least to me because i usually start woth the powers. I have one that I'm working on and over thinking many things but he feels fine.
ngl as my first oc I just based it on the IDW comics. I saw how starline created surge and kit for the counterpart of sonic and tails. I was thinking about what if there was a counterpart for our boy knux. I then decided to create a hyena (cuz lion king made me actually love them) and tried to base her off pure strength that could and I quote “COULD” rival that of knuckles’. I of corise didn’t want her to be straight up comparable to knux so I gave her a handicap that she can only do much damage on him if she has a certain gadget/robo-arm on that gives her tremendous strength. it’s still work in progress so some things may change

Colors can be tricky sometimes. 🤔 You don’t want your colors to clash with each other including the background, BUT you don’t want your colors being completely camouflaged neither. 🧐

To me, that's just lazy😑. There are a ton of animals in the animal kingdom that you can choose from. I won't judge you if you use a hedgehog (too harshly🤏🏽). What I don't see a lot of are marine mobians🤔
I love how you keep switching from chaotic edits and Jokes to a slow paced genuine discussion on each step. Which by the way, really like the process and the character at the end.
So far, the one I've got the most figured out is this magenta hyena geologist and paleontologist who seems like one of those kooky scientists on the outside, I'm also planning on designing a butterfly character for her to be friends with as well as conceptualize a third speedy one because I'm a sucker for Heroes style trios

When I create OCs, I always take it in a logical way in the actual series, like if i'm going to give my OC powers how does that makes since in the universe of Sonic? I also don't actually put myself (Self-Insert) in the universe just a character I created and put them in the universe. Like for example, Dakota the Arctic Wolf (My Sonic OC) is a Ninja from the Wolf Clan who live in the deep tundra of the Ice Cap Zone of Angel Island. Dakota is a calm & collected Arctic Wolf with the power of Aerokinesis (Manipulation of Air/Wind) inherited from his ancestors. Which, whom might be one of the reasons of why Angel Island is floating in the sky. Dakota, can be recognized by the fact he has spirial-markings on his hands/feet. Dakota also has some-type of inate Chaos energy within him, in which he couldn't access, so it is Inhibited by a crystal Amulet he wears around his neck. There was a war between the Wolf Clan Vs. the Echidna Tribe that eventually ending in Dakota being the last of his kind of what he thought. He did learn to things from his mother/father and that is... Mother: If you keep a calm heart, your body will react/move on its own. Father: You should always set your mind on victory, no matter what the odds are. So Dakota will then set of to do his own thing after that. I made this story you just read, a couple of years ago, so hope you enjoyed it. P.S Maybe if one day if Dakota was a real thing, maybe him and Knuckles will uncover the secrets of Angel Island, in a Kunckles & Dakota Story.

@@charmyzard I say yeah, cause in my Story (during Sonic 3 & Knuckles) Sonic, Tails and eventually Dakota takes on Knuckles is a 2v1 evolving into a 3v1 in Hidden Palace Zone. After the fight between the 4 of them. Dakota recognized Knuckles from somewhere during his hunting trip with his father. During that trip he saw a lil Echidna (Knuckles) next to the Echidna's father before the whole war started a couple months prior. Dakota stopped and Knuckles got up to send Sonic, Tails, Himself and Dakota to Sky Sanctuary and the rest was history for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. By the end Dakota stayed behind for Knuckles to patch him up, while Sonic & Tails go on to take on Eggman/Death Egg Zone. When Sonic & Tails leave Angel Island Knuckles & Dakota look out at them with gratitude. Knuckles & Dakota's relationship might start a lil rocky at first (Trying to move past their grudges against one another) and eventually they will become like brothers to one another helping each other out with the fact of being the last of their respective kinds.
I found that the ideal way (perhaps too good) to give flavor and interesting seeds for further character, backstory, and even design for your character is to combine them with whatever big interest you think can benefit. Indecisive on how to make my gloomy fox boy beyond "donut steel" material, it sparked on me to turn him into a Great War veteran, given my great interest (to say it lightly) on the lattter-Victorian/WW1/interwar periods. This gave a rather logical reasoning behind his grey attitudes and aggressive demeanor, not to mention that him being a darker shade of red logically led him to being an analog to the Red Baron in his time, further explaining some of his tendencies while also leaving some room for non-historical nuggets to tune him here and there given he's an analog in a parallel world, Sonic's world. This also raises the interesting dilemma: "How can this hopelessly outdated and now outmached ace of an age bygone cope with his new enviornment?" Of course, with an interest like mine while searching for explanations, it easily spiraled off into also detailing his homeland and war, eventually even affecting Tails indirectly, but I say it goes to show how much the synergy between your interests and your OC can power up.

I know he's a dude but Archie gave Clove and Cassie some cool shoes that resemble hooves. You could also get a little wild and give him bare feet or sandals and then decide how you want to handle the foot situation. Most people don't do that now a days even though it wasn't uncommon in some older media.
Most of my Sonic OCs are hedgehogs, but that’s only because they’re relatives of the canon hedgehog characters (my AU versions of the canon hedgehogs anyway.) I do have some non-hedgehog OCs, but I haven’t drawn any of them, nor most of the hedgehog ones.
I have a Sonic OC, and I went with a Latias. Which I know is a Pokemon, but the person I commissioned her from did a very good job with a Sonic character from it. I also made her a microbiologist/biochemist.

I have an OC named Hunter the Jerboa (I chose a jerboa because Cream the Rabbits early designs were heavily inspired by them and Cream is one of my favorite characters) He was trained by Knuckles when he was younger and slowly grew up to be similar to Espio, independent and sharp
As someone who often draws sonic oc fanart and has their own ocs, think about where they’d fit in the universe! Do they have a fan made arc they’re apart of? Or if they’re based in the game universe do they play a big part in the game? Do they have any preexisting connections to current characters? These things can heavily influence a design! In all honesty I don’t think stereotypical backgrounds are too bad as long as you write it right! I have a few lab experiment ocs and nobody has ever told me that they’re cringe or anything so don’t be afraid to lean into tropes, just (as you said) don’t make them OP.
Already got my character details down. Name: Cluster Animal: Hawk (side note, why are there so few bird sonic OC's out there, much less bird characters in all continuities in the series?) Powers: Geokinesis. (Mainly crystal based, but can control other forms of stone as well) Amplified with the Rage Heartstone, a cursed rage-eating artifact that's bound to Cluster, but it runs the risk of him going berserker mode, to the point where he cannot differentiate friend from foe. So he tries to keep that in check. Personality: As far as earth powered characters go (being all stoic and everything), Cluster is far from being considered emotionally stable. On normal days, he's usually friendly and calm, but is quick to fly into a murderous and psychotic rage in certain situations (such as being threatened, his friends being bullied, and especially during a fight), and it often take some time, for Cluster to fully calm down. He also has a tendency to see the worst in people, which is why he isn't very fond of people like Shadow, Rouge (especially), Omega, and Surge. Other details: Cluster is a very close friend and member of the Neo Diamond Cutters (Tangle, Whisper, Lanolin, and Jewel. All of whom he may also have a small crush on, especially Lanolin). He's also a very close friend of Silver and Blaze, who he idolizes as his heroes, and likes to train and spend time with them. He has an intense fear of fog. Cluster is often nicknamed "Rock Hawk" by Sonic, Tangle, and Surge, though he absolutely hates it.

My idea was to make a cat or dog, but 2 problems; 1: I can't draw to save my life 2: I don't know which one to use. Anyway, my idea was they had the same forms sonic does, just... a lot weaker because, duh. Also, they can actually access them without the chaos emeralds. They're just a lot weaker than they're meant to be. End of story.

I clicked on this video to see if I can.. upgrade a character I've made about 1-2 years ago! She's light blue and dark blue (yikes) and generally has wind powers or walks around doing NOTHING heh heh. Looking at this video may have helped me a bit. Of course, my character is pretty lame and had already gone through a few adjustments, so she's kind of special to me. First Sonic oc, must be special. First idk FNAF OC? Special. All this kind of stuff. I think the work's great, I think you're hilarious, and great video!

I insist on deviating as much from the Modern Sonic as is comfortable. If you're trying to make your character stand out (you as in anyone designing an OC rn), why not explore how much you're willing to stretch or break these molds while you're at it? Tails has a more rectangular head (lol or like a thumb if you remove his ears) and he's a very popular character so the head shape doesn't have to stay a circle! The roundness adds to the adorableness but there's more than one way to be round. It's really all about what you're willing to do differently, so look at your favorite Sonic characters and determine what you like the most about their designs. And that way you can examine what you actually like compared to what you're doing just to make your OC fit in. Sonic characters are inspired by cartoon aesthetics so pick an animal that you love, including a hedgehog if you really love hedgehogs, and play around with incorporating more of the actual animal. Look at other cartoon animals you love the design of and seeing if that can help you stylize your own in a way that fits. Also, consider making a chubby/fat OC (like Big) or make them tall (like Vector or Storm the Albatross.) Or give them some actual muscle regardless of gender; the noodle limbs can be cute but it's not 100% necessary. Maybe make a nonbinary character or make a character who's intentionally an adult or a little kid since a lot of them are teens or nebulous ages. Also, consider making a robot if you enjoy that! Robots are fun. If you want to get really wild and go hard mode, design a human OC (Sonic Unleashed had the most cartoon aesthetics for them but you can go with any human styles.) Or make a new villain and really go wild with it! Try out a lot of different shapes and see what sticks! Also, I do like the suggestion for living vicariously through your OC by giving them cool clothes (online catalog images are great references if they show the clothes being worn edit: same for shoes since some catalogs will show them from different angles) but there's always room for tacky, uncool OCs too lol. Regarding power levels, I always refer people to "Don't Worry Guys, Everything Isn't a Mary Sue" by Coelasquid. It's always relevant and it helps for other aspects of character creation beyond just the visual design. Sorry, this isn't me knocking the video at all, Mr. Evan Lionheart. I enjoyed the art, the tips about the color palette are great (that's actually what got me to click on the thumbnail, this new OC's color palette) but I'm suggesting these things with genuine sincerity. I've got some AoStH and Archie inspired characters and they're a bit more diverse or at least I'm trying to make them that way (even if one of them accidentally ended up with an Animal Crossing name because I didn't realize at the time but I refuse to rename my squirrel now lol.)
I've been an OC creator for YEARS, and I think this tutorial is pretty good! Although only thing I disagree with is that, hedgehogs aren't bad designs because there's too many of them. It's that they have those STUPID MONO EYES. RAGH I HATE DRAWING THEM SO MUCH!!!!😭😭😭 I love you mentioning looking up other unique animals though! It's always fun to think outside the box for a species of your animal. I recommend grabbing animals from mythology or history! They can be really interesting to learn about, add to your oc's backstory, and even give you ideas for powers that go with their stories. Some of the animals I've picked before are Unicorns, Dragons, or Jackalopes. But other animals that relate to mythology can work too! Especially if you wanna make some animals that don't have powers. I personally take a lot of design notes from Archie and IDW characters! Sure some of my stranger characters have more creative liberties, but I care more about making them fit into the cannon writing wise. (Two of my characters have robotic limbs, and some of them have highlights in their hair similar to Shadow, and others have design elements not commonly found in regular Sonic oc's, but closer to my general style.) I think an important thing to do is think about your oc's environment, and design their clothing around it! It makes your character look like an active part of whatever area of the world they inhabit. Taking inspiration from cultured clothing, or clothing from a certain time period can also be extremely fun! Or, dress your oc up in an outfit that reflects their job. I'd also like to say, I watched your other character video of making a Gacha OC into a Sonic OC! Despite me using Gacha frequently, I've never directly copied my Gacha Styles over to my artstyle that many times. I think you did a great job on that video, and this one too! I love the way your characters look, and your style is so cool! I think I'll try using the ball sketching to try and help me with my poses, since my characters bodies struggle looking different from each other. I think that tip helped me personally the most. I really liked this video! And I know this isn't your regular content, but I thought it was very fun! Both of your designing videos made me very happy. And I hope you have fun making your regular stuff! ^w^ Extra Thing: I've seen other people talking about their oc's, so I'll talk about it too! My most recent characters have been Qiang, Mei, and Lucky! They're all Chinese Lions, based off of the mythology and culture of China. Chinese Lions if you're unaware, are mythological statues built in China, and they are often told to keep out evil spirits from sacred places. During certain festivals, people will dress up as, and use a big puppet Chinese Lion with a mirror on their forehead. The mirror is used to trap, or scare off spirits. Qiang is the oldest sibling, and the prince of his kingdom. He uses a giant mirror to seal away spirits. Mei is the second oldest sibling. She doesn't have any powers, but she isn't helpless. She takes classes in physical combat, and is skilled in marcel arts. She's more competent than her brother when it comes to smarts though. And finally Lucky is their youngest sibling. He's based off of a Lucky Cat. He's a spirit, and watches over the temples near his siblings kingdoms. He's incredibly playful, and likes tricking and pulling pranks on people who are out of town. I have about 300+ characters, with a majority of them being Sonic or Sonic styled. I have some more characters who are more lore heavy but I don't wanna blab too much lol.

90% of the reason I chose a hedgehog for my OC (technically sona) is because if I couldn't have a hedgehog, I still wouldn't have a Sonic OC (I have extreme indecision)
I picked wolf..there's not a lot of names wolves in sonic...there's whisper in idw...I think gadget the character from forces was a wolf...but there is not a lot... I forgot the wolf tribe and the princess' name from Early Archie...my oc's name is Sparky...a gray wolf with a rather hidden background..while he trusts the freedom fighters...he does not head witb sonic shadow and knuckles..due to their brash "rush in without a plan" thinking..my oc gets along best with tails rouge (to a small degree) and of course gadget...my oc prefers long range supporting and recon... basically a sniper with a lazer wispen.(Not sure if that's how the weapon is spell)
Im in the process of making an OC and I decided to give them a super form and let them use chaos control HOWEVER they get nowhere near the real emeralds and only have the fake emeralds after Sonic n his friends discarded them. He can’t time travel but can slow down time and teleport HOWEVER it takes a lot of energy and he can only do it every so often and after he does it he has to take a break from using it. I gave him a super form however he doesn’t know he can and he’s SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than Super Sonic, only like 1/4 of his power, any suggestions?
Honestly, I'm surprised how well thought out the power scaling is. The only thing I could suggest is giving them their own ability to use like Sega does. Something they'll be recognizable for. Idk if that made sense
Tiburon and Mako They are royalty of a underwater kingdom(no name yet) mako is bubbly with a pink dress they looks as if a bathing suit(I forgor to mention that their cookie cutter sharks). Mako is the representative sibling, Tiburon is a guard of the sea crystals, they help keep emotions intact(I know I know cringe adding stuff to make them powerful, I just want a excuse to draw them super or ‘shiny’ as I like to call it, I might wright more later but ehh)
Don’t worry sea crystals aren’t that powerful, they are just good at emotional manipulation, they help with current ability’s (the siblings, better water bending and glowing stomachs, and stronger jaws and faster swimming) Mako seems all happy n such but her fear is being forgotten, you had a conversation a week ago and forgot her name? She is breaking a table, her main weakness is litterly just being able to over power her, your physically stronger then her? Boom, she’s beat
About Tiburon, he’s cold and quiet, much physically strong, could punch knuckles into a wall, he wouldent tho, knuckles could still beat him in a fight though, Tiburon is the main gaurd of the sea crystals, he takes his job extremely seriously. He wears a black water proof leather jacket with soft fabric to stop his sensory issues from triggoring. He also wears a belt and large pants, similar to mako, you can over power him, he’s beat. He is also mentally weak. Break his non existent ego. He’s dead, wow

My oc, (my pfp) is a hedgehog made by light Gaia for Sonic (as a companion after chip like DIED) so she’s kinda the last thing Sonic has of light giga (chip) . Since light giga and manipulate light, sover (my oc) can shapeshift (since light can make the perspective of things different and.. yeah) it’s pretty cringe ngl (I’m thinking of changing her to a cat or chinchilla)

I have technically three Sonic OCs (I haven’t drawn one of them in years). A wolf (the one I haven’t drawn in years), a cat, and a dog. The dog OC is a Rottweiler.
Zeeno the robot he is a prototype of metal sonic but after some failed battery power he gave up snd thow him away but thanks to all the chaos energy around every where he is alive but in a power reserve mode he is half as fast as metal sonic in power reserve mode 75% as fast in base and in combat mode he is as fast in combat mode he has electrokinesis he uses this to make energy weapons he has energy blasters on his left are the right arm is still broke because of the amount of time he was off line he can hover like 2 feet off the ground now I don't know if he can use chaos control he might but idk he has a maximum overdrive mode he becomes 5 times faster then neo metal sonic and Aerokinesis but it is extremely Draining so it's more like a last resort if you have any other power ideas just replay and everyone is free to use this character
I felt very called out for the hedgehog thing because My first oc was basically a Shadow clone. Except I didn't know that actual Shadow clones existed at the point His name was Ring and he instead of the chaos emeralds he used the world rings(Hence the name) I haven't thought of him in years, like i made him when i was ...7? 9? Which is why he his very... Simple Nowadays I just make Mecha OCs, There is no limit with them... Organic limit
Genuine question: What if you can't draw? I know the obvious answer is gonna be "commission an artist, lmao", I know that much. But then you have to figure out a way to describe the character visually to them, which is difficult if you can't even draw a basic sketch of them, or if you're not visually minded and can't imagine how all the pieces would go together. If you don't have the advantage of being able to sketch out a few different ideas, what can you even do at that point?
It's not about being able to draw or not. Even if you just open mspaint and scribble something down and add notes, you can still bring that character to life. Or you could always just write down what clothes they wear, the colors, and type of hairstyle, muzzle, eyes etc. just a bunch of simple notes. if you have a friend that is willing to help out, ask them to help make a sketch. Or you could always look up a sonic character reference base (t posing art) and add from there. We all start somewhere, and nobody gets it right the first time
I really don't know if my contribution as an existing being to this video counts, but I would like to know what you think of my OC. Since normally some friends always come up with an "it's okay" or "I don't know" Note that the thorns and crystallizations are part of its history and development. Fleetmare Imperus Carnamite, a gray-furred hedgehog on his head he has a pattern of quills, the bottom ones pointing down, the middle ones up and those in the center below, In the middle of each of these Fleetmare quills there are smooth crystallizations that complete the quills, in his teeth Fleetmare has the four normal fangs that are somewhat more noticeable, and in the rear molars Fleetmare has three or four fangs on both the upper and lower molars, he has two big eyes connected, these eyes are bicolor, the left violet and the right red, he has blue eyeliner on his forehead above his eyes Fleetmare has a violet line that blends with the blue eyeliner on his face. Fleetmare has two quills behind his cheeks with the same, a smooth but resistant crystallization like his quills, On the part of his forehead to the quill in the middle he has 16 spines, 8 on each side of dull orange, on the sides of the spine two that start on his forehead There are another 16 spines, 8 on each side leading to the middle quills on the back cheek of their cheeks. They have 20 spines, 10 on each side of dull orange, The dull orange spines surpass the quills, also all pointing backwards, although there are some that are either a little larger or point forward, he has pointed ears, in a small part of the top they have the same smooth crystallizations and below the crystallizations violet blackberry lines, just like in some parts of his head, On his chest, and part of his stomach, Fleetmare has a bluish-violet X, This being a birthmark, on the sides of the X Fleetmare has hook-shaped lines on his fur that differ from its skin-colored fur, and behind those lines Fleetmare has some blackberry violet lines, On his back, Fleetmare has 6 quills but one on the top right has a broken quill, Even so, those six quills are the same as those on his head, with smooth crystallizations and dull orange spines, Fleetmare has a long tail, being somewhat longer than his arms, but with the same width as his arm, with sharp crystals that point from the beginning of the tail to the tip of the tail, Fleetmare on his tail has 13 dull orange spines on the top of his tail, and at the end of the tail, Fleetmare has a six-plate thagomifer, three on each side of equal orange thorns, Fleetmare's arms have the sharp crystallizations of his tail but they are pointed up, with claws instead of fingers, but with the same joints as normal fingers, allowing him to grab things like a normal dude, but with claws, his gloves do not cover the claws, The gloves are dark blue with some light blue touches although don't know how noticeable they are, both gloves have a purple glow artifact, There are also some purple inhibitor rings, which are secured with a kind of clasp that at the end has a a part outside the gloves with a ⚠️ symbol, In addition, both gloves have two types of blades with some openings between them, On his legs Fleetmare has violet blackberry lines, on the back of his legs above his feet, Fleetmare has four dull orange spines, Fleetmare's shoes are blue with a purple stripe some black locks on the front part of the shoe and another on the part where it is separated, on the tongue of both Fleetmare shoes they have a ⚠️ symbol, mulberry blue socks, on the midsole they also have a smaller ⚠️ symbol on the toe, mudguard, heel notch up, Fleetmare has a metal that covers those parts and ended in two kinds of blades on the top, Even so, these metals are not completely covering the shoe, but rather they have parts where those parts of the shoe can be seen. On the front part of the shoe, Fleetmare has a purple thorn, and on the sides a little further behind the purple thorn there are two others, On the back of both shoes are other artifacts of the same purple glow, In the lower parts before reaching the metal they are dark in color with blacker lines and in the back of both sides it has a blue light, All the crystallizations that were mentioned are blueberry-blue in color It was the most tedious 12 or 17 minutes of my life to use the translator and see every detail of that drawing.

another fun thing to think about your character is what type (speed, fly, power) of character are they? if they’re a more unique animal, is there animal from a country or region that has any fun beliefs on the animal? could that be added into their backstory or physical design?
@@rawrpopsicles My character theme have a lot of Bells, Flutes and Piano, since he's from the snowy biome of Angel Island (Ice Cap). His theme has a snowy/traditional Shinobi tone to it.
Here's a rule if you're making a villain OC. In all regards, NO MATTER WHAT, your OC CANNOT, SHALL NOT AND SHOULD NEVER: USURP, OUT DO, OUTSMART or EVER DEFEAT EGGMAN! Lesser villains you can potentially get away with, but NEVER the series main antagonist! That title is his for a reason and any villain OC that disrespects that is AUTOMATICALLY CRINGE.

His Chao, Konata is a Light-Chao, opposite of Shadow's chao which is a Dark-Chao.

I do wish that Sega could dive a bit more into the OC idea. They could easily do that for a mini game like SonicDash, where all the characters share sonic powers. That way they wouldn’t have to animate a bunch of different powers and just give us a character creator.

My way of doing it is to Never pick hedgehog, and Avoid self inserting.
That's what I did with my Sonic OC, I never wanted to make my OC a hedgehog or actually putting myself in the actual series.
But put a created character in the things I love.

The result came out great. But i HIGHLY disagree on prohibiting people making a hedgehog. There is nothing wrong in creating a hedgehog, the problem is that they are over-used, making them difficult to stand out or NOT to look similar to other characters like Sonic, Shadow and Silver (The three that people inspire to make their hedgehog most of the time)
So fellas, don't listen to him on that (Sorry man xD), but beware, making an hedgehog look different from the ones you know is hard, so i suggest to do your best to stand out.

Thanks for the tutorial. I finally was able to create my first OC.
I've actually made a few in the past - and some redesigns of already existing characters. My two big ones are Pearl the Platypus and Max the Kangaroo (the latter pretty much being a cowboy). The Sonic art style is a lot of fun to work with, and if you're trying to experiment with character art or just starting I definitely see a lot of potential in it. I do a lot of other things for characters too - I've made some D&D stylized stuff as well. But I enjoy a lot of different designs. It's cool to see other people dedicated to making stuff like this too.

I got to say i agree with you on the hedgehog part. All these hedgehogs running around and half of them just look like re colors and powers/abilities are important at least to me because i usually start woth the powers. I have one that I'm working on and over thinking many things but he feels fine.
ngl as my first oc I just based it on the IDW comics. I saw how starline created surge and kit for the counterpart of sonic and tails. I was thinking about what if there was a counterpart for our boy knux. I then decided to create a hyena (cuz lion king made me actually love them) and tried to base her off pure strength that could and I quote “COULD” rival that of knuckles’. I of corise didn’t want her to be straight up comparable to knux so I gave her a handicap that she can only do much damage on him if she has a certain gadget/robo-arm on that gives her tremendous strength. it’s still work in progress so some things may change

When I create OCs, I always take it in a logical way in the actual series, like if i'm going to give my OC powers how does that makes since in the universe of Sonic?
I also don't actually put myself (Self-Insert) in the universe just a character I created and put them in the universe.
Like for example, Dakota the Arctic Wolf (My Sonic OC) is a Ninja from the Wolf Clan who live in the deep tundra of the Ice Cap Zone of Angel Island.
Dakota is a calm & collected Arctic Wolf with the power of Aerokinesis (Manipulation of Air/Wind) inherited from his ancestors. Which, whom might be one of the reasons of why Angel Island is floating in the sky. Dakota, can be recognized by the fact he has spirial-markings on his hands/feet.
Dakota also has some-type of inate Chaos energy within him, in which he couldn't access, so it is Inhibited by a crystal Amulet he wears around his neck.
There was a war between the Wolf Clan Vs. the Echidna Tribe that eventually ending in Dakota being the last of his kind of what he thought. He did learn to things from his mother/father and that is...
Mother: If you keep a calm heart, your body will react/move on its own.
Father: You should always set your mind on victory, no matter what the odds are.
So Dakota will then set of to do his own thing after that. I made this story you just read, a couple of years ago, so hope you enjoyed it.
P.S Maybe if one day if Dakota was a real thing, maybe him and Knuckles will uncover the secrets of Angel Island, in a Kunckles & Dakota Story.

@@charmyzard I say yeah, cause in my Story (during Sonic 3 & Knuckles) Sonic, Tails and eventually Dakota takes on Knuckles is a 2v1 evolving into a 3v1 in Hidden Palace Zone. After the fight between the 4 of them. Dakota recognized Knuckles from somewhere during his hunting trip with his father.
During that trip he saw a lil Echidna (Knuckles) next to the Echidna's father before the whole war started a couple months prior.
Dakota stopped and Knuckles got up to send Sonic, Tails, Himself and Dakota to Sky Sanctuary and the rest was history for Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
By the end Dakota stayed behind for Knuckles to patch him up, while Sonic & Tails go on to take on Eggman/Death Egg Zone.
When Sonic & Tails leave Angel Island Knuckles & Dakota look out at them with gratitude.
Knuckles & Dakota's relationship might start a lil rocky at first (Trying to move past their grudges against one another) and eventually they will become like brothers to one another helping each other out with the fact of being the last of their respective kinds.

I found that the ideal way (perhaps too good) to give flavor and interesting seeds for further character, backstory, and even design for your character is to combine them with whatever big interest you think can benefit.
Indecisive on how to make my gloomy fox boy beyond "donut steel" material, it sparked on me to turn him into a Great War veteran, given my great interest (to say it lightly) on the lattter-Victorian/WW1/interwar periods. This gave a rather logical reasoning behind his grey attitudes and aggressive demeanor, not to mention that him being a darker shade of red logically led him to being an analog to the Red Baron in his time, further explaining some of his tendencies while also leaving some room for non-historical nuggets to tune him here and there given he's an analog in a parallel world, Sonic's world. This also raises the interesting dilemma: "How can this hopelessly outdated and now outmached ace of an age bygone cope with his new enviornment?"
Of course, with an interest like mine while searching for explanations, it easily spiraled off into also detailing his homeland and war, eventually even affecting Tails indirectly, but I say it goes to show how much the synergy between your interests and your OC can power up.

I know he's a dude but Archie gave Clove and Cassie some cool shoes that resemble hooves. You could also get a little wild and give him bare feet or sandals and then decide how you want to handle the foot situation. Most people don't do that now a days even though it wasn't uncommon in some older media.
One way of making a sonic OC is add lots of Trauma 😊

Most of my Sonic OCs are hedgehogs, but that’s only because they’re relatives of the canon hedgehog characters (my AU versions of the canon hedgehogs anyway.)

I have an OC named Hunter the Jerboa (I chose a jerboa because Cream the Rabbits early designs were heavily inspired by them and Cream is one of my favorite characters) He was trained by Knuckles when he was younger and slowly grew up to be similar to Espio, independent and sharp
As someone who often draws sonic oc fanart and has their own ocs, think about where they’d fit in the universe! Do they have a fan made arc they’re apart of? Or if they’re based in the game universe do they play a big part in the game? Do they have any preexisting connections to current characters? These things can heavily influence a design!
In all honesty I don’t think stereotypical backgrounds are too bad as long as you write it right! I have a few lab experiment ocs and nobody has ever told me that they’re cringe or anything so don’t be afraid to lean into tropes, just (as you said) don’t make them OP.

Name: Cluster
Animal: Hawk (side note, why are there so few bird sonic OC's out there, much less bird characters in all continuities in the series?)
Powers: Geokinesis. (Mainly crystal based, but can control other forms of stone as well) Amplified with the Rage Heartstone, a cursed rage-eating artifact that's bound to Cluster, but it runs the risk of him going berserker mode, to the point where he cannot differentiate friend from foe. So he tries to keep that in check.
Personality: As far as earth powered characters go (being all stoic and everything), Cluster is far from being considered emotionally stable. On normal days, he's usually friendly and calm, but is quick to fly into a murderous and psychotic rage in certain situations (such as being threatened, his friends being bullied, and especially during a fight), and it often take some time, for Cluster to fully calm down. He also has a tendency to see the worst in people, which is why he isn't very fond of people like Shadow, Rouge (especially), Omega, and Surge.
Other details: Cluster is a very close friend and member of the Neo Diamond Cutters (Tangle, Whisper, Lanolin, and Jewel. All of whom he may also have a small crush on, especially Lanolin).
He's also a very close friend of Silver and Blaze, who he idolizes as his heroes, and likes to train and spend time with them.
He has an intense fear of fog.
Cluster is often nicknamed "Rock Hawk" by Sonic, Tangle, and Surge, though he absolutely hates it.
That's actually a pretty cool character. Far better than mine.

She's light blue and dark blue (yikes) and generally has wind powers or walks around doing NOTHING heh heh. Looking at this video may have helped me a bit. Of course, my character is pretty lame and had already gone through a few adjustments, so she's kind of special to me. First Sonic oc, must be special. First idk FNAF OC? Special. All this kind of stuff. I think the work's great, I think you're hilarious, and great video!

I'll be honest, I did kinda have a hedgehog for my Sonicsona. I'm glad I changed it to a Black-footed Cat
I insist on deviating as much from the Modern Sonic as is comfortable. If you're trying to make your character stand out (you as in anyone designing an OC rn), why not explore how much you're willing to stretch or break these molds while you're at it? Tails has a more rectangular head (lol or like a thumb if you remove his ears) and he's a very popular character so the head shape doesn't have to stay a circle! The roundness adds to the adorableness but there's more than one way to be round. It's really all about what you're willing to do differently, so look at your favorite Sonic characters and determine what you like the most about their designs.
And that way you can examine what you actually like compared to what you're doing just to make your OC fit in. Sonic characters are inspired by cartoon aesthetics so pick an animal that you love, including a hedgehog if you really love hedgehogs, and play around with incorporating more of the actual animal. Look at other cartoon animals you love the design of and seeing if that can help you stylize your own in a way that fits. Also, consider making a chubby/fat OC (like Big) or make them tall (like Vector or Storm the Albatross.) Or give them some actual muscle regardless of gender; the noodle limbs can be cute but it's not 100% necessary. Maybe make a nonbinary character or make a character who's intentionally an adult or a little kid since a lot of them are teens or nebulous ages.
Also, consider making a robot if you enjoy that! Robots are fun. If you want to get really wild and go hard mode, design a human OC (Sonic Unleashed had the most cartoon aesthetics for them but you can go with any human styles.) Or make a new villain and really go wild with it! Try out a lot of different shapes and see what sticks! Also, I do like the suggestion for living vicariously through your OC by giving them cool clothes (online catalog images are great references if they show the clothes being worn edit: same for shoes since some catalogs will show them from different angles) but there's always room for tacky, uncool OCs too lol.
Regarding power levels, I always refer people to "Don't Worry Guys, Everything Isn't a Mary Sue" by Coelasquid. It's always relevant and it helps for other aspects of character creation beyond just the visual design.
Sorry, this isn't me knocking the video at all, Mr. Evan Lionheart. I enjoyed the art, the tips about the color palette are great (that's actually what got me to click on the thumbnail, this new OC's color palette) but I'm suggesting these things with genuine sincerity. I've got some AoStH and Archie inspired characters and they're a bit more diverse or at least I'm trying to make them that way (even if one of them accidentally ended up with an Animal Crossing name because I didn't realize at the time but I refuse to rename my squirrel now lol.)

I've been an OC creator for YEARS, and I think this tutorial is pretty good! Although only thing I disagree with is that, hedgehogs aren't bad designs because there's too many of them. It's that they have those STUPID MONO EYES. RAGH I HATE DRAWING THEM SO MUCH!!!!😭😭😭
I love you mentioning looking up other unique animals though! It's always fun to think outside the box for a species of your animal. I recommend grabbing animals from mythology or history! They can be really interesting to learn about, add to your oc's backstory, and even give you ideas for powers that go with their stories. Some of the animals I've picked before are Unicorns, Dragons, or Jackalopes. But other animals that relate to mythology can work too! Especially if you wanna make some animals that don't have powers. I personally take a lot of design notes from Archie and IDW characters!
Sure some of my stranger characters have more creative liberties, but I care more about making them fit into the cannon writing wise. (Two of my characters have robotic limbs, and some of them have highlights in their hair similar to Shadow, and others have design elements not commonly found in regular Sonic oc's, but closer to my general style.) I think an important thing to do is think about your oc's environment, and design their clothing around it! It makes your character look like an active part of whatever area of the world they inhabit. Taking inspiration from cultured clothing, or clothing from a certain time period can also be extremely fun! Or, dress your oc up in an outfit that reflects their job. I'd also like to say, I watched your other character video of making a Gacha OC into a Sonic OC! Despite me using Gacha frequently, I've never directly copied my Gacha Styles over to my artstyle that many times. I think you did a great job on that video, and this one too! I love the way your characters look, and your style is so cool! I think I'll try using the ball sketching to try and help me with my poses, since my characters bodies struggle looking different from each other. I think that tip helped me personally the most. I really liked this video! And I know this isn't your regular content, but I thought it was very fun! Both of your designing videos made me very happy. And I hope you have fun making your regular stuff! ^w^

I've seen other people talking about their oc's, so I'll talk about it too! My most recent characters have been Qiang, Mei, and Lucky! They're all Chinese Lions, based off of the mythology and culture of China. Chinese Lions if you're unaware, are mythological statues built in China, and they are often told to keep out evil spirits from sacred places. During certain festivals, people will dress up as, and use a big puppet Chinese Lion with a mirror on their forehead. The mirror is used to trap, or scare off spirits. Qiang is the oldest sibling, and the prince of his kingdom. He uses a giant mirror to seal away spirits. Mei is the second oldest sibling. She doesn't have any powers, but she isn't helpless. She takes classes in physical combat, and is skilled in marcel arts. She's more competent than her brother when it comes to smarts though. And finally Lucky is their youngest sibling. He's based off of a Lucky Cat. He's a spirit, and watches over the temples near his siblings kingdoms. He's incredibly playful, and likes tricking and pulling pranks on people who are out of town. I have about 300+ characters, with a majority of them being Sonic or Sonic styled. I have some more characters who are more lore heavy but I don't wanna blab too much lol.

90% of the reason I chose a hedgehog for my OC (technically sona) is because if I couldn't have a hedgehog, I still wouldn't have a Sonic OC (I have extreme indecision)
The other 10% is that it gives me a head start in their lore

I picked wolf..there's not a lot of names wolves in sonic...there's whisper in idw...I think gadget the character from forces was a wolf...but there is not a lot... I forgot the wolf tribe and the princess' name from Early Archie...my oc's name is Sparky...a gray wolf with a rather hidden background..while he trusts the freedom fighters...he does not head witb sonic shadow and knuckles..due to their brash "rush in without a plan" thinking..my oc gets along best with tails rouge (to a small degree) and of course gadget...my oc prefers long range supporting and recon... basically a sniper with a lazer wispen.(Not sure if that's how the weapon is spell)

Im in the process of making an OC and I decided to give them a super form and let them use chaos control HOWEVER they get nowhere near the real emeralds and only have the fake emeralds after Sonic n his friends discarded them. He can’t time travel but can slow down time and teleport HOWEVER it takes a lot of energy and he can only do it every so often and after he does it he has to take a break from using it. I gave him a super form however he doesn’t know he can and he’s SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than Super Sonic, only like 1/4 of his power, any suggestions?
Honestly, I'm surprised how well thought out the power scaling is. The only thing I could suggest is giving them their own ability to use like Sega does. Something they'll be recognizable for. Idk if that made sense

Tiburon and Mako
They are royalty of a underwater kingdom(no name yet) mako is bubbly with a pink dress they looks as if a bathing suit(I forgor to mention that their cookie cutter sharks). Mako is the representative sibling, Tiburon is a guard of the sea crystals, they help keep emotions intact(I know I know cringe adding stuff to make them powerful, I just want a excuse to draw them super or ‘shiny’ as I like to call it, I might wright more later but ehh)
Don’t worry sea crystals aren’t that powerful, they are just good at emotional manipulation, they help with current ability’s (the siblings, better water bending and glowing stomachs, and stronger jaws and faster swimming) Mako seems all happy n such but her fear is being forgotten, you had a conversation a week ago and forgot her name? She is breaking a table, her main weakness is litterly just being able to over power her, your physically stronger then her? Boom, she’s beat
About Tiburon, he’s cold and quiet, much physically strong, could punch knuckles into a wall, he wouldent tho, knuckles could still beat him in a fight though, Tiburon is the main gaurd of the sea crystals, he takes his job extremely seriously. He wears a black water proof leather jacket with soft fabric to stop his sensory issues from triggoring. He also wears a belt and large pants, similar to mako, you can over power him, he’s beat. He is also mentally weak. Break his non existent ego. He’s dead, wow

My oc, (my pfp) is a hedgehog made by light Gaia for Sonic (as a companion after chip like DIED) so she’s kinda the last thing Sonic has of light giga (chip) . Since light giga and manipulate light, sover (my oc) can shapeshift (since light can make the perspective of things different and.. yeah) it’s pretty cringe ngl (I’m thinking of changing her to a cat or chinchilla)

Zeeno the robot he is a prototype of metal sonic but after some failed battery power he gave up snd thow him away but thanks to all the chaos energy around every where he is alive but in a power reserve mode he is half as fast as metal sonic in power reserve mode 75% as fast in base and in combat mode he is as fast in combat mode he has electrokinesis he uses this to make energy weapons he has energy blasters on his left are the right arm is still broke because of the amount of time he was off line he can hover like 2 feet off the ground now I don't know if he can use chaos control he might but idk he has a maximum overdrive mode he becomes 5 times faster then neo metal sonic and Aerokinesis but it is extremely Draining so it's more like a last resort if you have any other power ideas just replay and everyone is free to use this character

My oc kinda just exist, he helps in the most unconvetional way possible, but he helps.
Genuine question: What if you can't draw? I know the obvious answer is gonna be "commission an artist, lmao", I know that much. But then you have to figure out a way to describe the character visually to them, which is difficult if you can't even draw a basic sketch of them, or if you're not visually minded and can't imagine how all the pieces would go together. If you don't have the advantage of being able to sketch out a few different ideas, what can you even do at that point?
It's not about being able to draw or not. Even if you just open mspaint and scribble something down and add notes, you can still bring that character to life. Or you could always just write down what clothes they wear, the colors, and type of hairstyle, muzzle, eyes etc. just a bunch of simple notes. if you have a friend that is willing to help out, ask them to help make a sketch. Or you could always look up a sonic character reference base (t posing art) and add from there. We all start somewhere, and nobody gets it right the first time

Fleetmare Imperus Carnamite, a gray-furred hedgehog on his head he has a pattern of quills, the bottom ones pointing down, the middle ones up and those in the center below, In the middle of each of these Fleetmare quills there are smooth crystallizations that complete the quills, in his teeth Fleetmare has the four normal fangs that are somewhat more noticeable, and in the rear molars Fleetmare has three or four fangs on both the upper and lower molars, he has two big eyes connected, these eyes are bicolor, the left violet and the right red, he has blue eyeliner on his forehead above his eyes Fleetmare has a violet line that blends with the blue eyeliner on his face. Fleetmare has two quills behind his cheeks with the same, a smooth but resistant crystallization like his quills, On the part of his forehead to the quill in the middle he has 16 spines, 8 on each side of dull orange, on the sides of the spine two that start on his forehead There are another 16 spines, 8 on each side leading to the middle quills on the back cheek of their cheeks. They have 20 spines, 10 on each side of dull orange, The dull orange spines surpass the quills, also all pointing backwards, although there are some that are either a little larger or point forward, he has pointed ears, in a small part of the top they have the same smooth crystallizations and below the crystallizations violet blackberry lines, just like in some parts of his head, On his chest, and part of his stomach, Fleetmare has a bluish-violet X, This being a birthmark, on the sides of the X Fleetmare has hook-shaped lines on his fur that differ from its skin-colored fur, and behind those lines Fleetmare has some blackberry violet lines, On his back, Fleetmare has 6 quills but one on the top right has a broken quill, Even so, those six quills are the same as those on his head, with smooth crystallizations and dull orange spines, Fleetmare has a long tail, being somewhat longer than his arms, but with the same width as his arm, with sharp crystals that point from the beginning of the tail to the tip of the tail, Fleetmare on his tail has 13 dull orange spines on the top of his tail, and at the end of the tail, Fleetmare has a six-plate thagomifer, three on each side of equal orange thorns, Fleetmare's arms have the sharp crystallizations of his tail but they are pointed up, with claws instead of fingers, but with the same joints as normal fingers, allowing him to grab things like a normal dude, but with claws, his gloves do not cover the claws, The gloves are dark blue with some light blue touches although don't know how noticeable they are, both gloves have a purple glow artifact, There are also some purple inhibitor rings, which are secured with a kind of clasp that at the end has a a part outside the gloves with a ⚠️ symbol, In addition, both gloves have two types of blades with some openings between them, On his legs Fleetmare has violet blackberry lines, on the back of his legs above his feet, Fleetmare has four dull orange spines, Fleetmare's shoes are blue with a purple stripe some black locks on the front part of the shoe and another on the part where it is separated, on the tongue of both Fleetmare shoes they have a ⚠️ symbol, mulberry blue socks, on the midsole they also have a smaller ⚠️ symbol on the toe, mudguard, heel notch up, Fleetmare has a metal that covers those parts and ended in two kinds of blades on the top, Even so, these metals are not completely covering the shoe, but rather they have parts where those parts of the shoe can be seen. On the front part of the shoe, Fleetmare has a purple thorn, and on the sides a little further behind the purple thorn there are two others, On the back of both shoes are other artifacts of the same purple glow, In the lower parts before reaching the metal they are dark in color with blacker lines and in the back of both sides it has a blue light, All the crystallizations that were mentioned are blueberry-blue in color
It was the most tedious 12 or 17 minutes of my life to use the translator and see every detail of that drawing.
Holy shit that's a lot to read and I ain't gonna lie, I did not read all of that, but I like the idea of crystalizations being part of the body, gives a cool fossilization feel to it

His theme has a snowy/traditional Shinobi tone to it.

Lesser villains you can potentially get away with, but NEVER the series main antagonist! That title is his for a reason and any villain OC that disrespects that is AUTOMATICALLY CRINGE.
