  • The Alpinestars Halo Drystar Jacket is a jacket that throws away the typical playbook for a motorcycle jacket, and takes a fresh approach to a touring jacket that is great for all weather. I bought one, and this is my review of the features!

    Very nice review. I own one and reviewed it for Web Bike World. On hot days I wear it open meaning unzipped in the front using the built-in hooks as well as using the built-in kidney belt. Since I wear a Helite Air Bag vest it allows a ton of airflow wearing the jacket open.

    I also like outers that allow you to reach through to a pocket on your inner garment.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this jacket doesn't do that, but at least when you fully vent it out, all of your pockets stay with you! I once took off the outer layer of my jacket to go get some gas before going for a ride, and ended up leaving my wallet behind because I had put it in the pocket of the jacket that I'd taken off.

      I've finally been able to ride around in my jacket over the past few weeks (Canadian winters are long!) and I can confirm that the Large works well for me, even though I usually get a medium. I was thinking that the arms might be just a little too long, or that the large might flap in the wind on my motorcycle without any wind protection, but it works very well. The seams of the zippers do let SOME air through so I can see the point of keeping the rain shell around for wet days. Overall, it's been an excellent jacket for me so far, I'll have an update soon.

    I see two problems with this jacket, the first is that it doesn't come standard with back protection, for the price it should include it. Another is not having ventilation openings in the sleeves, without having to remove them. There will certainly be future fixes in the Halo 2 model as well as in Andes 2.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't mind the lack of venting in the sleeves, if you open up the front, you get plenty of ventilation, and I like that the sleeves can be removed to stow easily. Adding too many features to the sleeves might just make them more bulky to stow. The back protector is a good one. Many jackets don't come with one, but you're right, this is at a price point where it would be nice to see that. I will say that I've been riding with this jacket for a while now, and I absolutely love it... it's not perfect, I'll have an update, but the issues I have aren't major.

    Thank you for the in depth review,
    I ordered the jacket after seeing the review, and it arrived!
    You were right about the size, I normally wear medium, and the sizing puts me somewhere between medium and large (but more on the medium side). After ordering the medium, it fits me snugly, the only problem that I have with it is that it is very rigid, I find it very hard to flex my elbows, raise my hands above my head or behind my back, but in the riding position it is okay.
    Did yours soften a bit over time or do you think I should return for a large instead (this is my first ever jacket so I am a bit new to this)?
    Thank you

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching! It's hard for me to judge fitment from the TH-cam comments section, but one general tip that I'll give is to see if you have the range of motion that you'll need to operate a motorcycle. If that is comfortable, then any other movement doesn't matter. Most motorcycle jackets don't allow you to move in EVERY direction or have EVERY movement that you could make in a T-shirt. Honestly, if they did, I'd want to question their safety benefits. Usually the protection has some limitations on overall movement, but again, if you don't think it's the right fit, don't keep it, see if you can find something that fits you.

    How waterproof is the jacket without using the rainproof jacket over the top.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I haven't yet tried the jacket on a bike yet. I film in Canada, and I'm still waiting for the snow to disappear. Just from looking at it, I would think that the material itself is fairly waterproof, but the seams around zippers etc would definitely be weak points in a driving rain (or while driving in the rain) The venting zippers would likely let water through at speed, and that's where the rain jacket would come in handy. I think, if it were me, I'd commute to work without worry about the weather, but I wouldn't go on tour without the rain jacket. I'll know more when I can get on the bike and test it this Spring, and I'll continue to make videos to share my experiences with the jacket. If it's crap, I'll let you know that I've wasted my money, but I do have high hopes for the jacket. I think it will suit my needs well.

    Hi, great in-depth review, thanks. You mentioned you have gone for size L as you are in between sizes. What’s your chest size please? The Alpinestars size guide indicates chest sizes for S, M and L as 40, 42 and 44. I’m kind of 38-40 chest and unsure what size to go for as none of the bikes shops around me stock this jacket so have to purchase online. Thanks.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I don't remember my chest size, but if you're 38 to 40, I think you'll be fine with the Medium. The only thing I notice with the Large is that the arms are a little long. As I said, the Large fits me in the shoulders well, but it's roomy everywhere else. Just check on the return policy before you buy. I had to buy some of my gear online and I returned a pair of pants that wasn't close to fitting me, it wasn't a big deal to return them. I think I would have fit the Medium in this jacket as well, and I'm usually a medium. This jacket isn't as snug as other Alpinestars jackets.
