By far, the most intelligent and completely comprehensive explanation of the "keyboard world" I have ever heard. What is telling is the fact that not once does this gentleman play a note. EVERY video on TH-cam, when talking about a keyboard, the presenter will 'press a key' for some reason or the other. Not this guy. No time for it. The intellectually verbal explanation cuts through. Thank you.

Thanks for great advice. I am a korg fan.
    I own pa3x and Kronos.
I am waiting to buy their new flagship arranger keyboard. I hope Korg can use more new technology like Kronos sound engine rather than old triton again. Triton has more than 20 year old.

Best analytic explanation on arranger keyboards. I had a Korg PA800 and although it had many tools and features, the sound quality was bad especially when recording to computer for mixing and mastering. Very low clarity and mediocre or even low for most of the sounds. I know Korg PA4X is a much better instrument but I can't afford it and also I don't want to deal with Korg problems anymore. That's why I am considering Yamaha SX900 arranger. I perform for small crowds only and do home recordings.

This was a great explanation for the difference between the two. In fact, I had always thought pricewise that the comparison was quite the opposite. But I guess if one is discussing 'flagships' such as a Pa4, then yes the arranger is more expensive. Normally even the most expensive Casio arranger ( WK-7600 ) would run only about $450.00 US. There's a limited amount of sound editing that's allowed in arranger. My Casio WK-200 has a synthesizer mode which allows this. This is an excellent discussion. Thanks for posting

I had for some time thought that using an arranger was "cheating." I don't want the keyboard to play itself. I want to be the one playing the keyboard. But you put it in a good perspective the skills and talents that are necessary to use an arranger effectively when performing as a one-man-band. It's somewhat analogous to an experienced pilot landing a 747, many switches and buttons to press at specific times, all the while still manually flying the plane.

Hello Tiho, very good and clear presentation. I agree with you because I also like SD90 very much, I feel very comfortable with it, and the overall sound is richer than Genos, I find Genos sound like Hifi quality and when you are used to Ketron you find Genos too light sound. However if I want to play New Age, or styles with soft drums, strings or pads, with Ketron is very difficult, because all the drums and styles are very punchy. In Ketron I can not find any New Age styles, smooth drums, and Genos has many. Genos also has the articulation sounds for sax and guitars feature which is interesting. So its quite difficult to decide for one of them if you play all kind of music, because they are very different from each other.

They are still arranger keyboards intended for a one man band in a live setting. But to be honest most people
who create backing tracks are more likely to go down the root of a midi controller, a DAW and VST samplers
like Halion or Kontakt. Arranger keyboards are certainly not intended for the person who wants to sequence
      backing tracks from scratch.

Superb overview, Tiho! Thanks for such an incisive explanation not just of the differences between arrangers and workstations, but of the strengths and weaknesses of the three primary high-end arrangers. I have one followup question, or rather a request for advice. You mention the Korg PA4X, I'm assuming because its replacement the PA5X had not yet been released. But could you provide your most current thoughts on the PA5X? I ask because it's getting mixed reviews from arranger users/enthusiasts - improvements in sound quality and functionality in some areas, but missing some previous capabilities (e.g. pattern recording and editing) that have yet to be implemented after several updates over a couple of years. I'm wondering if those negative points might factor into your current thinking, to the point that you would advise someone who's particularly interested in the Korg arranger to instead look to acquire a used PA4X?
