He talked about how the cost of every piece of military equipment was taking food out of people's mouths among other things. I stood transfixed in front of moms TV knowing what he was saying was really important although I didn't understand exactly how important. Looking back, now I do. As seriously as I took that speech I didn't take it seriously enough. I never would have believed that before my life was quite over our police would be issued excess military equipment for use against our own people or that we would upend the entire middle east. That our infrastructure would crumble, our industrial areas would all but disappear, our family farms would be replaced by factory farms and commodity production owned by big investors, that multinational corporations would buy our government policies or that our country would be hollowed out with all the wealth being sucked from the middle class up to the top in the form of taxes to subsidize corporations and wealthy campaign donors much less that the wealthiest corporations would be exempt form paying taxes but paid billions for locating their business where they intend to locate anyway. Things sure have changed a lot in my lifetime. I admit I do like the technology though.

Pay close attention to what happens these days in America's most-financially-marginal places (rural areas) where the cost per-person of services (doctors, dentists, schools, roads, hospitals, internet, water & sewer utilities, police coverage, etc) is not supportable by the local tax base. Out there, hospitals are closing. Peak America came and went already. You may safely use the post-USSR collapse of the former Soviet Union as a model for some aspects of what's coming next.

Not only has it kept us on a series of endless wars but it cheapens (probably not the best word...I don’t know...diminishes?) the service of our troops. I am not surprised. There is a whole industry, a multi billion dollar industry with very specialized skill set propagandizing people into believing what they want people to believe. And the conditioning starts early. It takes a lot of courage, willpower, soul-searching, knowledge and pain to break away from it. In addition they know exactly what they want, and are well organized to achieve their goal, while we are just a bunch of free thinkers without clearly defined goals going against powerful machine.
Is victory possible? Yes. In the 1980's the Soviet block was considered a powerful monolith ruling half of the planet, keeping its iron grip not only on the population of today's Russia, but also dozens of countries in central Europe. What broke the Soviet union was that the people in those countries stopped believing official narrative. Economic sanctions helped to break Soviets grip, but without mass movement of the people in these countries Soviet empire would survive, at least for couple more decades. Break the official narrative and you will effect changes. Easy - no. Doable - yes.

Ronald Reagan, Mitch McConnell and his ilk paved the way for the Tea Party faction and Trump to become the significant co-optors of the Republican Party. When the Religious Right began its assault on secular socioeconomic political issues from the pulpit and SCOTUS defined corporations as individuals with the same rights as human beings and unleashed Citizens United on the voting and elections process and a majority of the populace became complacent that the USA was too great to fail ...the perfect political nightmare has become a reality that may create another mundane autocracy in the history of mankind.

Civilian control of the military was so important to Ike that he had never registered to vote. He was neither a Democrat nor a Republican and was recruited by both teams. Ideologically he was either a moderate Democrat or a moderate Republican. Take your pick. The Interstate was sold as the Interstate National Defense Highway System because of his experience with the fighting through the horrible European roads. He also instituted the first student loan program which I am a beneficiary of. The full title was the National Defense Student Loan Program. It came originally with almost no interest. The banks were not allowed to gouge students because the loans were fully backed by the federal government and carried zero risk. As President, he never saluted the military or returned their salute. It's a small but important distinction on who is given and who is accepting honors. It is the militaries duty to give honor to the civilian commander in chief as an extension of the citizens not the other way around.

    • @Ravenscaller
      @Ravenscaller 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a quaint notion and not widely accepted even at the time but it was his belief that the military should remain as non-political as possible. That the job of the miliary is to salute the flag, defend the nation and to accept the orders of it's elected leadership. One way to do that it to stay out of taking sides. You should also consider this in the context of his contemporary MacArthur who attempted to grant himself the authority to usurp the President's orders regarding Korea.
I completely agree with your last comment regarding the passing of honors. Yes the Interstate system was sold as at least in part a military project and as was the student loan program. In the beginning the interest banks could charge on student loans was set very low because they were guaranteed. A student loan was free income to the bank. The government would repay no matter what. Overtime of course the banks, being banks, turned into a profit making monstrosity. Thanks for the reply.

that guy the statement that the “welfare state” costs 3 times the defense budget is true, but misleading. In 2017, roughly 27% of the federal budget went to Medicare, 24% went to Social Security, and 15% went to the Defense Department. The funding for Medicare is complex. A good chunk of it comes from a dedicated payroll tax. Another good amount comes straight out of your Social Security check when you go on Medicare, which is mandatory at age 65. The rest comes from the general tax fund. The majority of Social Security payments come from the payroll tax which pretty much all of us who have drawn a paycheck have contributed to. I really doubt that many working class Americans would want to see the elimination of Medicare and Social Security. Any hope for even a halfway decent retirement for them would be eliminated, and millions upon millions of retired Americans who currently are just squeaking by would be financially devastated. The social cost to the country as a whole would be enormous. Every American over 65 who is not very wealthy would be up in arms, quite possibly literally.

I think the JFK assassination was the turning point. Up until then, I think the country was still feeling the post-WW2 buzz, a heady optimism that all was well (if you were white, anyway). Sure, there were rumblings of racial disparity, rumblings of foreign war, and the USSR was a big scary boogeyman - but all Disney movies need a boogeyman, right? We were still living the 1950s conviction that here in the US of A, anything was possible. And boy, three bullets fired in Dallas in late 1963 drove that point home, hard. We lost our innocence that day, and never got it back. We lost our way, and still haven't found it. That event changed us - we became cynical, distrustful, and embittered.

I happen upon your channel by accident. I am impressed and can not stop listening to you. I have never written a comment on a youtube channel before. Your platform hit home with me and my views. I feel as though we have a kinship. Now, this is a long shot because I am an African-American, and your views are more profound than any Black activist out there in the atmosphere. I will recommend and support your channel going forward. People need to hear from you. The cliche "don't judge a book by its cover" genuinely does apply to you and your platform. Keep up the excellent work. I will be sharing your channel with all I know.

I'd like to think it's a sign of the tide shifting, but I've made it through Thanksgiving and Christmas and not one of my family's Obama hating lifelong GOPers who have loved to babble about how evil democrats are mentioned a single thing.

politics just get me depressed at this point. So much negativity and different sides to a story that i dont even know whats true or false. It sucks. I believe we dont need political parties or labels, we just need people who are moral, ethical and will make change for the benefit of human kind. theres a lot of weird people on both left and right so i dont identify with them. America needs to be a place for, by, and of the people period.

I just had a long argument with a republican guy who said essentially that the richest people in the world deserve money and liberals eat up all the welfare and he cant wait until there is a civil war so he can hang every liberal he sees from a street light.
anyway what im trying to say is.
i think the republicans have succesfully brainwashed these people to hate an even broader group of people and i think they dont even see dems as people PERIOD
dangerous teetertot of a time we are living in for sure.

Following the recent protests, police action, dissent and so on, I've seen comment threads on some videos that are basically summed up as
Dem: There's gonna be a civil war at this rate.
Rep: Heh... won't be much of a war.
      Dem: Why's that?
      Rep: We won't hesitate.
